  • Patent number: 4180299
Abstract: A carrier is provided for use in the passenger compartment of a vehicle. The carrier in one embodiment is adapted to carry tape cassettes and/or tape cartridges and comprises a housing open at its top and having a plurality of partitions laterally disposed across the housing and defining a plurality of slots or pockets wherein each slot is adapted to receive up to two tape cassettes or cartridges. The housing is detachably mounted in the passenger compartment of the vehicle so that it can be removed when the vehicle is unattended. The housing, when mounted, is pivotal between a first position in which the top of the housing is openly accessible from the interior of the passenger compartment and a second position in which the top of the housing is closed and is inaccessible to the interior of the passenger compartment. In another embodiment, the carrier is adapted to mount a Citizens band radio in a portion of the carrier.

  • Patent number: 4156392
Abstract: A wet coal drying apparatus is provided for use in conjunction with a coal burning furnace for drying wet coal prior to loading the coal into the furnace. The drying apparatus of the present invention comprises a first conveyor means for transporting the coal from a storage area or coal crusher to an elevated position and a wet coal dryer means for transporting the coal from the elevated position to a utility conveyor while drying the coal. The wet coal dryer means includes an enclosed type conveyor whereby the coal is transported through the interior of the enclosed dryer means. In addition, a fluid conduit feeds hot gases, preferably either a diverted portion of the exhaust gases from the furnace or, alternatively, hot air from a heat exchanger, to the lower end of the dryer means so that the hot gases pass upwardly through the interior of the dryer means.

  • Patent number: 4152822
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for replacing a commutator on a starter armature in which radially extending, circumferentially spaced commutator contact wires are interspaced between and soldered to mating contact wires on the armature. A heated platen includes at least one receiving hole through which the commutator is placed so that the soldered connection between the commutator and armature contact wires rests against the platen to thereby melt and remove the solder. The commutator is secured in a chuck while the armature is driven away from the stationary commutator. Thereafter, a novel tool spreads the rotor contact wires radially outwardly which permits a subsequent and new commutator to be positioned over the armature shaft so that the new commutator contact wires are interspaced between the armature contact wires. The contact wires between the new commutator and the armature are then soldered together by dipping the assembly into a solder pot heated by the platen.

  • Patent number: 4148124
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for attaching a first member having a predetermined cross-sectional shape to a thin walled second member at a predetermined attachment position. The second member is supported on one side around the outer periphery of an area substantially corresponding to the shape of the first member at the attachment position on the second member. A drive means then engages and drives the first member through the other side of the second member at the attachment position whereby the first member punches a plug corresponding to the shape of the first member from the second member. The first member thus forms a hole in the second member in which the first member is frictionally engaged.

  • Patent number: 4144683
Abstract: In one preferred embodiment a two-part bracket assembly is provided for securing a downwardly sloping stringer to the upper of two building levels. Preferably, each part of the bracket is formed from a sheet of metal. One part of the bracket comprises a vertical flange which abuts against and is secured to the frame of the upper building level. A side panel of the bracket part lies in the vertical plane perpendicular to the plane of the flange and abuts against the side of the stringer. A flat support flange extends perpendicularly away from the lower edge of the side panel and extends underneath and abuts against the lower surface of the stringer. The plane of the support flange is angled downwardly relative to the vertical flange so that with the lower surface of the stringer abutting against the support flange, the stringer slopes downwardly from the upper building level.

  • Patent number: 4142760
Abstract: A cover with novel hold down means is provided for a vehicle having an open bed, such as a pickup truck, for covering and enclosing the vehicle bed. The cover is constructed of a rigid or semirigid material and is hinged to one sidewall of the vehicle bed so that the cover can pivot upwardly from the other sidewall of the vehicle bed to permit access into the interior of the bed. In addition the novel hold down means comprises an elongated member which threadably engages a V-shaped member and both of which are inserted into a stake hole on the vehicle bed. Rotation of the member moves the V-shaped member upwardly to clampingly engage the interior of the vehicle sidewall.

  • Patent number: 4139466
Abstract: A differential fluid pressure indicating device for use in conjunction with a filter body carrying a filter element which provides an exteriorly visible signal when the differential pressure across the filter element exceeds a predetermined amount. The device comprises a housing having a cylindrical chamber in which a rotationally constrained piston is axially slidably disposed and movable between a first and second axial position while resilient means urge the piston towards its first axial position. The inlet fluid pressure communicates with one axial end of the piston while the outlet fluid pressure communicates with the other axial end of the piston. When the differential pressure across the filter element exceeds a predetermined value, the inlet fluid pressure moves the piston from its first to its second axial position and releases a spring loaded exteriorly visible member which rotates from a first to a second rotational position.

  • Patent number: 4126342
Abstract: A security device permitting an inwardly-openable door to be partly opened and to be held by the security device, when operative, from further opening movement. The security device includes a latch mounted on the inside of the door, a retractable bolt, and an arm mounted on a frame member for pivoting about an axis normal to the axis of pivoting of the door. The arm is of hollow box-like construction and has a front wall provided with a slot with which the bolt is engaged. The bolt has a transverse groove in which the edge of the slot is received, the groove is slidable along the edge of the slot and engaged thereby to prevent withdrawal of the bolt from the slot as the door is opened. The slot has at least one end portion from which the groove in the bolt is disengaged when further opening of the door is to be permitted.

  • Patent number: 4118592
Abstract: A shaped body or structure of carbon, in particular a carbon electrode, preferably having a largely round cross-section and being provided in its surface with at least one slot extending in a generally longitudinal direction and extending to the inside of the structure. The slot is filled by a refractory filler material that substantially reduces the oxidation of the slot walls during operation of the electrode and which allows for variations of the slot width where a temperature gradient develops within the electrode cross-section because of temperature changes occurring during operation in an electric arc-furnace. The filler material is adapted as to its physical and chemical properties of the electrode material and is anchored within the slot.

  • Patent number: 4090827
Abstract: A method and apparatus for fluidizing crushed, pulverized, comminuted powdered or other particulate solids, with or without added liquid, that will not flow readily under gravity, to enable this material to flow through an aperture either as an extrusion or to cause it to conform precisely to the shape of a mold, including inserting the material into the top of a hopper having an aperture at its base through which the material is discharged under gravity to a surface or into a mold, subjecting the material while in the hopper to one or more vibrators arranged to effect vibration of said material in the intended direction of flow through the hopper to cause the material to flow freely through the hopper, and effecting relative movement between the hopper and the surface or mold to effect the withdrawal of the material discharged from the hopper.
