  • Patent number: 5701383
Abstract: A video time-shifting system characterized in having a continuous recording track accessed by separate, asychronous read and write facilities enables playback of a video program to commence from any point in the program while continuing to be recorded in real time, thus providing VCR-like program control features such as PAUSE/RESUME, REWIND, and FAST FORWARD. A memory is used to store information relating to various points in the program so that even upon receipt of multiple PAUSE commands, the system automatically keeps track of correct program re-entry. In the preferred embodiment, the storage means takes the form of a continuous recording track in a magnetic disk drive.

  • Patent number: 5697216
Abstract: Method and apparatus for reduction of fluid borne noise in a hydraulic system are disclosed. An improved isolating hose assembly comprising first, second and third volumetrically compliant members with first and second inductive flow members providing fluidic coupling therebetween is disclosed. The improved isolating hose assembly acts similarly to an electronic low pass filter network in deterring fluid borne noise from entering portions of the hydraulic system located therebeyond. A modified isolating hose assembly comprising a resistive member introduced within the second volumetrically compliant member in order to eliminate the possibility of a deleterious resonance in the assembly is disclosed. In addition, apparatus for additionally reducing structure borne noise in hydraulic systems comprising direct hydraulic coupling of the first volumetrically compliant member to internal output ports of the hydraulic system's pump is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5697372
Abstract: A method and apparatus for compensating for the effects of variable attenuation in a body being scanned by an ultrasound pulse echo scanner in which a compensation signal is derived on the basis that the signal strength of the received signal at any time instant after generation is influenced by both attenuation and back scatter. The apparatus comprises an array of transducers which generate a received signal from an echo, for applying a time-dependent gain to produce a signal which is a function of the received signal, temporary storage and integrator functions operable to sum the signal values for each time instant from a commencement point, the combining of the integrated signal with the stored original signal to form a quotient, and the displaying of the signal thus generated.

  • Patent number: 5697928
Abstract: An electrode catheter is disclosed for creating a linear lesion in heart tissue of a heart chamber in order to correct cardiac arrhythmia. The catheter is elongated in dimension such that, upon insertion of the catheter in the patient, the catheter substantially continuously contacts either the endocardial or epicardial heart tissue. The catheter includes a plurality of electrodes and the electrodes are positioned at spaced intervals along the catheter. The electrodes are then sequentially energized with a radio frequency in conjunction with a back plate attached to the patient such that the electrodes form a continuous lesion conforming in shape to the shape of the catheter on the heart tissue. This lesion, furthermore, is of sufficient depth such that the lesion interrupts electrical nodal conduction across the lesion.

  • Patent number: 5697105
Abstract: A facial mask eliminates odors from the exhalation of a wearer while permitting detection by the wearer of odors a the surrounding environment. In the preferred embodiment, the invention takes the form of an air permeable facial covering disposed over the mouth and nose of the wearer, including elements for absorbing exhalation odors impregnated therein. At least one single direction inlet valve is disposed in the air permeable facial covering thereby providing an incoming air passageway through which ambient air may pass without passing through the means for absorbing exhalation odors. Elements for securing the perimeter of the air permeable facial covering to the wearer, such as an elastic band, is provided so that the exhalation of the wearer must pass through the elements for absorbing exhalation odors and may not escape around the perimeter of the air permeable facial covering.

Abstract: A drive mechanism for automatic paint stirring equipment of the type having a housing and a plurality of spaced apart and parallel shafts rotatably mounted to the housing. Each shaft is adapted for detachable driving connection with a stirring assembly associated with a lid on a paint can supported on the housing. The drive mechanism includes a gear wheel secured to an upper end of each of the shafts and an elongated rigid gear rack which meshingly engages a plurality of the gear wheels on the shafts. The gear rack is reciprocally longitudinally driven through a wheel and link assembly to simultaneously reciprocally drive the shafts in alternating rotational directions. This alternating rotational movement is, in turn, transferred to the stirring assembly associated with the paint can for each of the drive shafts.

  • Patent number: 5694813
Abstract: An industrial robot is disclosed having a base which is secured to a ground support surface. A robotic manipulator is pivotally mounted to the base about a predetermined axis. The base and robotic manipulator, furthermore, form a channel therebetween around at least a portion of an outer periphery of the base and the robotic manipulator. An elongated flexible tube is positioned in the channel and one end of the tube is secured to the base while the other end is secured to the robotic manipulator. The tube forms a guide for wires and/or conduits extending between the base and the robotic manipulator.

  • Patent number: 5695415
Abstract: A basketball backboard aiming device. The device includes a backboard member for attachment to a standard basketball hoop. The backboard has a front, planar surface. A linear array of indicia are disposed along the backboard, the array including a plurality of individual targets. Each of the targets is selectively viewable by a shooter disposed along a unique axis forming a preselected angle with respect to the plane of the backboard. One side of the angle is defined by a line of sight extending from the shooter to the target and the second side by the plane of the backboard. The selectively viewable target provides an aiming point for a shooter disposed anywhere along the line of sight when said player attempts a bank shot.

  • Patent number: 5692628
Abstract: A closure-container package is illustrated in which the closure is pressed-on to the container neck and threaded off the container neck. Either the container neck or the closure has a helical thread which engages axially extending ribs on the other of the container neck or closure to form indentations in the ribs which act as threads, teeth or a track for unthreading. A continuous or rotary seal is used between the container neck and the closure which does not require a sealing force from the threaded connection.

  • Patent number: 5692478
Abstract: A fuel management system for a gaseous fuel internal combustion engine is disclosed in which a mass air flow sensor as well as a mass gas flow sensor provide input signals to an electronic control unit (ECU) which then determines the air/fuel ratio. The ECU in turn generates output signals to a fuel valve to control the mass of fuel flow to the engine and thus the air/fuel ratio. A turbocharger bypass valve, a precooler for the gaseous fuel supply, a pressure accumulator upstream from the fuel valve, as well as a system to calibrate the engine to the specific gaseous fuel is described to enhance the accuracy of the fuel management system. An improved pressure balanced valve for controlling the fuel flow to the engine is also provided as well as a cylinder pressure transducer to optionally provide an output signal to the ECU to determine the air/fuel ratio.

  • Patent number: 5692214
Abstract: A personal computer is used to assist in the selection of television programs to be recorded at future times and to control a video tape recorder to implement the selected recordings. An application program allows the computer to receive data representing a schedule of future programs. The operator can perform data base operations on the data to obtain listings of programs of particular interest. A program to be recorded is selected by moving a cursor into position with the display of the program listing on the computer. An output device generates infrared signals to control the video tape recorder and a cable box to tune and record a selected program.
