Abstract: A device for monitoring the condition of a plurality of remote stations is particularly suited for monitoring the condition of smoke alarms, television antitheft devices and the like in hotels and similar institutions. The device includes a plurality of remote sensors wherein each sensor has a predetermined electrical characteristic, such as a predetermined electrical resistance, and at least one remote sensor is associated with each remote station. A main control unit sequentially measures the electrical characteristic of each of the sensors and then compares the measured electrical characteristic from the sensors with a predetermined value. In the event that the measured value differs from the predetermined value by more than a preset amount, an indicator is activated which advises an operator which sensor, and thus which remote station, has been activated or tampered with thus requiring investigation.
Abstract: A variable geometry device is provided for use with the compressor outlet of a turbine engine. The turbine engine includes a support housing, a compressor contained within the support housing and having a compressed air outlet and in which a pair of spaced walls define an annular and radially extending diffuser passageway. The inner end of the diffuser passageway is open to the compressed outlet while the outer end of the diffuser passageway is open to the combustion chamber for the turbine engine. A plurality of circumferentially spaced diffuser vanes are mounted to one of the diffuser walls and protrude across the diffuser passageway. An annular recessed channel is formed around the opposite diffuser wall and an annular ring is mounted within the channel. A motor is operatively connected to this ring and, upon actuation, displaces the ring transversely across the diffuser passageway to variably restrict the diffuser passageway.

Abstract: The present invention provides an improved cooling system for a reciprocating piston engine. The engine is of the type having at least one cylinder and a piston movable between a top dead and bottom dead center. The cooling system comprises a housing or coolant jacket which encircles the outer end of the cylinder and extends towards the inner end of the cylinder. The coolant jacket, however, terminates short of the inner end of the piston when the piston is at its top dead position. A fluid passageway is formed through the housing and has both an inlet and outlet. Liquid coolant is supplied under pressure to the inlet port on the housing. The coolant flows through the lower section of the water jacket surrounding the piston area thus achieving uniform adequate cooling of both the combustion chamber and piston.
Abstract: A torque measuring device is provided for measuring the engine torque of an engine having an output shaft and connecting through a gear box having a planetary gear arrangement to a load. The torque measuring device comprises a hub having an axis and supporting the stationary member of the planetary gear arrangement coaxial with the axis of the hub. An annulus is secured to and supports the gear box housing and is also secured to the hub by a plurality of circumferentially spaced spokes extending between the annulus and the hub and tangent to some circle coaxial to the hub. As the torque applied to the planetary gear arrangement increases, the hub rotates from its at rest position deflecting the spokes in proportion to the reaction torque of the stationary members. An arm extending outwardly from the hub cooperates with a position transducer to measure the amount of rotation of the hub with respect to the annulus and thus the torque on the planetary gear arrangement.

Abstract: An air cooled exhaust valve provided primarily for use with an internal combustion engine, or the like. The valve is of the type having an elongated stem and an enlarged head formed at one end of the stem. The stem is axially slidably mounted within a housing while the enlarged valve head cooperates with a valve seat in the housing. A fluid passageway in the housing is connected at one end to a source of pressurized air and at its other end is open to the valve stem adjacent the valve head so that pressurized air flows axially down along the valve stem and across the valve head to cool both the valve head and stem.
Abstract: A freeze proof faucet which is adapted to be mounted to an exterior wall and comprises an elongated tubular housing defining an interior housing chamber. The housing is mounted to the wall and the interior end of the housing is connected to the water supply while an outlet is formed on the housing outside the wall. An elongated valve member is longitudinally slidably mounted within the housing and movable from a closed position, in which one end of the valve member sealingly engages and closes a valve seat adjacent the innermost end of the housing, and an open position in which the valve member permits water to flow from the inlet, through the housing and out through the outlet. A valve actuator is threadably mounted to the housing on its exterior end and includes a pusher surface which cooperates with an abutment surface formed on the valve member.
Abstract: An in line filter assembly is provided for use in conjunction with a painting system having a pressurized source of liquid paint, a paint applicator and a fluid line which fluidly connects the pressurized paint source and applicator together. The filter assembly comprises an elongated housing defining an elongated housing chamber. One end of the housing chamber is connected in series with the pressurized paint source while the opposite end of the housing chamber is fluidly connected to the applicator so that paint flowing from the source and to the applicator passes through the housing chamber. A tubular and cylindrical filter element open at one end is removably inserted into the housing chamber so that paint flow through the housing chamber flows through the filter element which removes any solid contaminants contained in the paint.
Abstract: The present invention provides a spectacle lens blank for an aphakic eye and which is adapted to be positioned at a predetermined position in front of the eye. The lens blank includes a lens body having a posterior surface and an anterior surface. The anterior surface is aspherical from its center and to its outer periphery and the radius of curvature of the anterior surface is formed with a variable diopter gradient which is proportional to the distance between the eye and the anterior surface when the lens blank is at its predetermined position. Preferably, the lens power decreases six diopters from the center and to the outer periphery of the lens blank. In use, the lens blank of the present invention provides a wide field of central and peripheral vision for a person following extra-capsular surgery.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing prosthodontic work comprises a face bow formed from a plate which supports impression styli which, when removed from the patient's head, is incorporated as the upper arm of the dental articulator. At least one, but preferably two, impression receptacles containing impressionable material are detachably secured to a lower face bow in registration with the stylus on the upper face bow to form the impression. Each receptacle is removed from the lower face bow after age hardening of the impression, and is secured to an articulator base at a position which maintains registration between the stylus and the impression formed in the receptacle. The impression formed thus forms a condylar guide hinge for mounting the upper arm of the articulator, preferably the upper face bow to the base, for simulating the condylar movement of a particular patient with respect to dental impressions to be used in forming dental prostheses to be worn by the patient.
Abstract: An automatic shut off valve comprising a housing having a main inlet, an outlet, a user inlet and a user outlet. A valve assembly is contained within the housing and is movable between an open and a closed position. In its open position, the user inlet and outlet are fluidly connected in series with the main inlet and main outlet while, conversely, in its closed position, the valve assembly sealingly closes and isolates both the user inlet and outlet from the main inlet and main outlet. A compression spring urges the valve assembly towards its closed position while a fluid flow rate greater than a predetermined amount into the user inlet retains the valve assembly in its open position. Consequently, in the event of an interruption or blockage of the fluid flow between the user inlet and outlet, the compression spring snaps the valve assembly to its closed position thus isolating the inlet and outlet from the main inlet and terminating fluid flow through the shut off valve.
Abstract: Leather waste is cut up into strips or portions and then subjected to working in order to break up the strips or portions into fine material and individual fibers, the fibers then being separated from the fine material. Alternatively, the strips or portions may be worked in order to loosen cohesion between the fibers, thereby producing bunches thereof. The bunches are at least partially broken up into individual fibers by means of a solvent which is then removed. Additives may be added in order to impart further properties to the material.
Abstract: The present invention provides a photodosimeter for use by sunbathers and the like and which activates an alarm when a predetermined radiation dosage has been received by the user. The photodosimeter includes a photocell exposed to the sunlight and which provides an analog output signal to an analog to digital (A/D) converter proportional to the radiation which impinges upon the photocell. The A/D converter provides an output signal to a microprocessor which periodically samples the output from the A/D converter and maintains a count in memory proportional to the radiation exposure. This count is divided by the solar protection factor (SPF) of any sunscreen material which is applied to the user's skin and the SPF factor is inputted to the microprocessor via a keyboard. When the count in the counter exceeds a predetermined maximum, an alarm is activated warning the user that the maximum radiation exposure of the user has been reached.
Abstract: A fastener for connecting a cover plate to an electrical box housing comprises a prong secured to a base which is attached to the rear face of the cover plate. The fastener comprises a prong having a compressible, radially expanded portion which is received within an aperture formed in the electrical box housing. The expanded portion is resiliently urged toward a radial dimension exceeding the diameter of the aperture so that the prong can be tightly engaged within a bore or behind an aperture in a plate. The fastener can be easily attached to previously known cover plates by glueing, welding, or the like. However, the preferred construction of the fastener comprises a filiform element bent to form a planar base and a prong extending substantially perpendicular to the base, and wherein the base is secured to the rear face of the cover plate.
Abstract: A posterior chamber lens implant is disclosed for use after extracapsular surgery. In extracapsular surgery the interior of the lens of the human eye is evacuated through a surgical opening formed in the front membrane of the lens while leaving the rear membrane of the lens or posterior capsule intact. The lens implant comprises an optic having a front surface and a rear surface and the implant is secured within the posterior chamber of the eye. In one form of the invention, a ridge spaces the rear surface of the optic forwardly from the posterior capsule while in a second form of the invention, the rear surface of the optic is concavely formed to space the rear surface of the optic forwardly of the posterior capsule. The implant of the present invention thus facilitates laser posterior capsulotomy in the event of clouding of the posterior capsule following the extracapsular surgery.
