  • Patent number: 4886506
Abstract: A catheter includes a catheter tube extending to a distal end portion that terminates at a terminal end of the catheter tube, the distal end portion including a tapered portion extending between the terminal end and a transition region on the distal end portion set back slightly from the terminal end. The tapered portion has a cross sectional area that decreases toward the terminal end to define a frustoconically-shaped outer surface extending from the transition region to the terminal end on which a soft tip member is mounted. The tip member has a size and shape adapted to be placed over the tapered portion coaxially, and a composition softer than that of the distal end portion that is suitable for bonding to the frustoconically-shaped outer surface.

  • Patent number: 4886209
Abstract: A sprinkler includes a pop-up stem that defines a passage extending to a downwardly facing opening that is circumscribed by a generally planar surface and covered by a valve element dimensioned and arranged in confronting relationship with the planar surface to at least partially block the opening. The valve element is mounted on the stem to enable movement in a plane generally parallel to the planar surface in order to vary an amount by which the valve element blocks the opening, and rotation of a shaft causes valve element movement to restrict the flow of liquid through the opening a selected amount. A resiliently deformable valve element may be loosely mounted to provide clearance sufficient to enable movement of particulate material from between the valve element and the planar surface while enabling the liquid to urge the valve element toward the planar surface.

  • Patent number: 4886338
Abstract: A micro pH sensor is constructed by reacting powdered aminoalkylated cellulose with a dye to covalently bond the dye to the aminoalkyl groups on the cellulose. Any excess unreacted aminoalkyl groups are blocked with a blocking agent and the dye containing powdered cellulose is taken up in a solvent. A portion of the solvated dye containing cellulose is deposited in association with an optical fiber. The cellulose is regenerated into a solid matrix by acid treatment of the solvated dye containing cellulose to deposit the dye containing celllulose matrix on the optical fiber.

  • Patent number: 4883490
Abstract: An acetabular cup of approximately hemispherical configuration adapted for implantation in the acetabulum and having an outer surface with a generally part-spherical contour and an inner concave bearing surface adapted to receive a femoral head. The outer surface has a plurality of grooves defining segments, and the grooves are adapted to receive, and interlock with, cement for affixing the acetabular cup within the acetabulum. At least one of the grooves has an undercut which defines an overhanging flange. Cement is received in such groove behind the flange to interlock with the flange and to resist loosening of the acetabular cup from the acetabulum. The acetabular cup has spacer lugs on the segments, and a radiopaque marker is embedded in one of the segments in a polar region of the acetabular cup.

  • Patent number: 4881335
Abstract: A door sign device includes an actuator mounted on the inner door surface of a door that has inner and outer door surfaces so that a user can move the actuator between first and second actuator positions, and a follower mounted on the outer door surface so that the follower can be move between first and second follower positions that each correspond to a respective one of the first and second actuator positions. Coupling components are included for coupling the actuator to the follower magnetically so that the follower follows actuator movement, and indicator components responsive to the follower being in the first follower position indicate that a predetermined sign applies. Roller-type actuator and follower components may be employed that are mounted for rotation about axes that are parallel to the inner and outer door surfaces.

  • Patent number: 4879961
Abstract: An airfoil device includes an inflatable structure for attachment to an existing sail to form a sail assembly. The inflatable structure is dimensioned and arranged to extend over a substantial portion of the existing sail and a valve arrangement is included for enabling a user to inflate and deflate the inflatable structure while it is so attached to thereby vary the sail assembly shape. The inflatable structure includes inner and outer layers that define an enclosed interior suitable to contain a pressurized gas for inflation purposes, and they are dimensioned and arranged to provide an airfoil shape to the sail assembly when the inflatable structure is inflated. The inflatable structure may be arranged to be either removably or fixedly attached, and various configurations are disclosed to enable use with various types of sails for all points of sailing under various wind conditions.
