  • Patent number: 4891011
Abstract: A system for assisting the learning of a subject and, more specifically, for the aiding of the teaching of a language. The system comprises a substrate upon which is arranged a first, basic text that contains supplementable information which is unaidedly visible to the eye of a human user. A second, explanatory text, interlinearly arrayed with respect to the first text, provides additional information related to the supplementable information contained in the first text. The second text is arranged so that the additional information is generally proximate to the supplementable information to which it relates. The second text is displayed using a medium which is generally invisible to the eye of a human user unless exposed to light of a specified frequency range, such as ultraviolet (UV) light.

  • Patent number: 4340913
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for recording digital data on magnetic tape with an audio recorder. A logic circuit receives the data to be recorded and outputs two sequences of high and low levels: one sequence directly corresponds to the data and the other inversely corresponds to the data. One sequence is first inverted with respect to the other and the two sequences are then combined and recorded. After a data sequence, the two logic circuit outputs are placed at the same level, and the subsequent inversion of one output level relative to the other causes the combined levels to reach an intermediate, third level.

  • Patent number: 4333056
Abstract: An automatic gain control circuit wherein the gain progressively increases in increasingly larger magnitudes. The illustrative embodiment includes an amplifier whose gain is related by a voltage follower to the voltage on a capacitor in a feedback loop. A rectifier develops a signal representing the AGC output level which is compared against a threshold value. A current source, arranged in a further feedback loop with the capacitor and the voltage follower, increases the voltage on the capacitor as a function of that voltage. The second derivative with respect to time of such function is non-negative. To ensure that there exists a voltage on the capacitor upon which the current source can operate, a starting circuit provides a small, non-zero voltage to the capacitor.

  • Patent number: 4025273
Abstract: A machine for uniformly forming discrete quantities of material into a predetermined shape is disclosed. The machine includes a conveyor, a plurality of stationary forming members having a predetermined cross-section, and a corresponding plurality of guiding members extending from respective ones of the forming members so that discrete quantities of material carried by the conveyor are guided under the forming members where they are uniformly formed into a predetermined shape.

  • Patent number: 3999248
Abstract: An apparatus and method for knitting proteinaceous fragments into a unified mass is disclosed. The apparatus is adapted to accumulate proteinaceous fragments into a wad, and then knit the fragments together to form a unified proteinaceous patty. The method includes the steps of accumulating the meat fragments into a wad, and then knitting the wad to form a unified proteinaceous patty.

  • Patent number: 3971221
Abstract: Means for forming, at the bottom of a body of water, a barrier to substantially reduce the impact of waves developed in the body of water are disclosed. The means comprise a flotation member having a leeward end, means defining a pivotable axis for said flotation member, and structural means for applying a force to said flotation means. The force applied by the structural means causes the flotation member to pivot about the axis and urge the leeward end into the body of water. The leeward end, when urged into the body of water, causes particulate matter suspended therein to gravitate to the bottom to form a barrier for the waves. The force applied by the structural means are adapted to be overcome when waves of a predetermined substantial size are developed, whereupon the flotation member is temporarily pivoted about the axis to a substantially horizontal position relative to the surface of the body of water to prevent damage to the flotation member when waves of substantial size are developed.

  • Patent number: 3971562
Abstract: A target game comprising a rollable sheet member having a surface and at least one edge adapted to be removably supportive from a support means is disclosed. The target game further includes indicia means on the surface of the sheet member, having target aperture means therein associated with the indicia means. The target aperture means are adapted to accommodate a target displayed in the context of the indicia means.
