Patent number: 4057599Abstract: A complex of polyphenylene ether resin and methylene chloride obtained by polymerizing a phenol in methylene chloride and then cooling the mixture to cause the complex to precipitate, is mixed with a vinyl aromatic compound, e.g., styrene monomer, heated to decompose the complex and remove methylene chloride from the blend, and thereafter the vinyl aromatic compound is polymerized. The products are useful as molding resins and the like.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 1976Date of Patent: November 8, 1977Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Glenn Dale Cooper, Irwin Schraga

Patent number: 4041085Abstract: This invention is for a process for the ortho-alkalation of phenols in the presence of a magnesium oxide alkylation catalyst. The process comprises the vapor phase reaction of a non-ortho-substituted phenol with an alcohol in the presence of an alkylation catalyst and is characterized by the introduction of water vapor into the reaction system. The water vapor effects continuous regeneration thereby substantially increasing catalyst life before regeneration is required. This is an important advantage as it increases the period of reactor operation before shut down is required, thereby making the overall process more economical.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 1975Date of Patent: August 9, 1977Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: Alton J. Frabetti, Jr.

Patent number: 4035357Abstract: A novel process is disclosed for the polymerization of phenols, e.g., xylenols, and recovery of polyphenylene ethers from the polymerization mixture. The method is based on the use of hot methylene chloride as a reaction solvent, elevated oxygen pressure and separation of the polyphenylene ether as a solid complex with methylene chloride upon cooling. Also a feature is the recycle and recovery of methylene chloride.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 1976Date of Patent: July 12, 1977Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Glenn Dale Cooper, Irwin Schraga

Patent number: 4001282Abstract: Gamma-Butyrolactone is produced by passing vaporized maleic acid/anhydride or succinic acid/anhydride or mixtures thereof, water, and hydrogen, over a metallic catalyst capable of hydrogenolyzing a carboxylic group to a methyleneoxy group. Even though water is also a byproduct of the reaction, very high yields of gamma-butyrolactone are obtained, and the added water plays a key role in extending catalyst life by suppressing the formation of coke and tar.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 1973Date of Patent: January 4, 1977Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: Elwood M. Patent number: 3983090Abstract: There are provided compositions comprising a polyphenylene ether and an acrylic resin in combination with a diene rubber-containing resin, the compositions optionally containing a styrene resin. Illustratively, the addition of an acrylic resin modified butadiene rubber-acrylonitrile-styrene resin to polyphenylene ethers or mixtures of polyphenylene ethers and polystyrenes provides unexpected improvements in toughness in parts molded from the compositions, and in their resistance to gasoline. Such properties are improved without substantially impairing gloss or surface appearance.Type: GrantFiled: May 17, 1974Date of Patent: September 28, 1976Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Visvaldis Abolins, Donald L. Reinhard
