  • Patent number: 5024449
Abstract: A seal is particularly suited for closing the ends of an antifriction bearing which is located on a journal where its inner races are captured between wear rings and backing elements having overhangs which are directed back toward the end of the bearings and, as such, encircle the wear rings. Indeed, a seal exists at each end of the bearing for isolating the annular space between the inner and outer races of the bearing. Each seal includes a case that is fitted into the end of the outer race and projects axially from that race as well as radially inwardly toward the wear ring. In addition, it has two elastomeric lips which are presented toward the wear ring, one being configured primarily to retain lubricant in the annular space between the two races of the bearing and the other to exclude contaminants from that space. The seal also has an elastomeric spray shield which is attached to the case and projects radially outwardly from it toward the overhang.

  • Patent number: 5022659
Abstract: A seal assembly for antifriction bearings in which a cone and a cup have raceways for roller bearings, a seal case carried by the cone and by the cup for supporting a seal element on each of the seal cases to provide a space therebetween for retention of a body of lubricant in position to create a barrier for blocking the ingress of contaminants from the exterior. One of the seals is positioned to be exposed to the outside to have a lip operative on one of the seal cases to preclude the ingress of contaminants, and the other one of the seals is exposed to the bearing interior to allow lubricant to pass into the cavity between the seals and also to assure the presence of lubricant to the interior of the bearing assembly.

  • Patent number: 5021035
Abstract: A traction drive unit for transmitting rotary motion about an axis of rotation has an inner sun roller, an outer ring and planet rollers arranged in two circular rows between the sun roller and outer ring. The sun roller takes the form of a double cone having outwardly presented raceways which taper downwardly toward each other and thrust ribs that project radially beyond the large ends of the raceways. The outer ring has two inwardly presented tapered raceways which taper downwardly toward the ends of the ring. The inner planet rollers are tapered rollers which are organized in two circular rows along the raceways of the sun member. The outer planet rollers have crowned peripheral surfaces which contact the tapered raceways of the outer ring and the tapered side surfaces of the inner planet rollers. They are captured axially by reason of the taper of the outer raceways and inner planet rollers. The outer rollers revolve in pairs about axles which are fitted to end disks.

  • Patent number: 5021246
Abstract: A low alcohol reduced calorie beer is produced by a mashing technique wherein a main mash at a temperature below the activity range for beta-amylase is added incrementally to a brewing liquid at a temperature above the deactivation temperature of beta-amylase and below the deactivation temperature of alpha-amylase at a rate such that the added main mash is substantially instantaneously raised to the temperature of the brewing liquid. This mashing technique limits the conversion of starches by beta-amylase and other enzymes without significant loss of alpha-amylase from overheating to produce a wort having a low real degree of fermentation of from about 40% to about 46%. The main mash has a temperature of about 95.degree. F. to 120.degree. F., and the brewing liquid has a temperature of about 169.degree. F. to 174.degree. F. and can be water or a cooker mash that has been boiled and cooled. Beer can be produced having less than 2% alcohol by weight and less than about 118 calories per 12 ounce serving.

  • Patent number: 5009523
Abstract: A bearing assembly for supporting a shaft in a housing includes two single row tapered roller bearings mounted in axial alignment, yet in opposition. The first bearing is conventional, having the usual cup, cone and complement of tapered rollers. The second bearing has a conventional cone and complement of rollers which may be the same as their counterparts in the first bearing. However, the cup of the second bearing further has an integral axial extension which projects toward and abuts the back face of the cup for the first bearing. The two cones are separated by a spacer and are clamped between two radial abutments on the shaft, whereas the cup of the second bearing is clamped with respect to the housing such that it is incapable of shifting relative to the housing. This secures the entire bearing assembly in the housing.

  • Patent number: 4998685
Abstract: A container for dispensing thin line, such as tippet material used for fishing, includes a housing having a flat end wall and a cylindrical peripheral wall which together define a cavity for holding several spools of the line. The lines pass from their respective spools through a slit in the peripheral wall. The slit has elastomeric liners along its edges, and these liners serve to grip the line, so that its ends are presented for gripping beyond the container. The housing also has a spindle which projects from the end wall of the housing through the spools, beyond which it has a screw thread. An end plate extends across the cavity where it opens out of the housing, this plate being attached to the housing at the screw threads on the spindle so that it can be turned down to clamp the spools between it and the end wall of this housing. This controls the resistance with which the spools will rotate when dispensing line.
