Also provided is a method for transferring a gene of interest into a mammalian cell.

    Abstract: A system, method, and computer program for automatically generating text analysis systems is disclosed. Individual passes of a multi-pass text analyzer are created by generating rules from samples supplied by users. Successive passes are created in a cascading fashion by performing partial text analyses employing existing passes. A complete text analyzer interleaves the generated passes with a framework of existing passes. The complete text analysis system can then process texts to identify patterns similar to samples added by users. Generation of rules from samples encompasses a wide range of constructs and granularities that occur in text, from individual words to intrasentential patterns, to sentential, paragraph, section, and other formats that occur in text documents.

    Abstract: A nonvolatile reprogrammable switch for use in a PLD or FPGA has a nonvolatile memory cell connected to the gate of an MOS transistor with the terminals of the MOS transistor connected to the source of the signal and to the circuit. The nonvolatile memory cell is of a split gate type having a first region and a second region, with a channel therebetween. The cell has a floating gate positioned over a first portion of the channel, which is adjacent to the first region and a control gate positioned over a second portion of the channel, which is adjacent to the second region. The second region is connected to the gate of the MOS transistor. The cell is programmed by injecting electrons from the channel onto the floating gate by hot electron injection mechanism. The cell is erased by Fowler-Nordheim tunneling of the electrons from the floating gate to the control gate. As a result, no high voltage is ever applied to the second region during program or erase.

    Abstract: A voltage down converter 10 for providing a supply voltage and current to a device, such as a semiconductor device. The voltage down converter includes a first circuit 12 that supplies steady state or “DC” current to the device, and a second circuit 14 that supplies the fluctuating or “AC” current to the device. The first circuit 12 includes a first comparator 18 that drives a first transistor P1 to supply most of the steady state current. The second circuit 14 includes a second comparator 20, which is larger than the first comparator 18, and which drives a second transistor P2, which is smaller than the first transistor P1, to supply the fluctuating current to the device. The converter 10 further includes a feedback circuit 16 for controlling the supply voltage.

    Abstract: Zinc finger proteins of the Cys2His2 type represent a class of malleable DNA binding proteins which may be selected to bind diverse sequences. Typically, zinc finger proteins containing three zinc finger domains, like the murine transcription factor Zif268 and the human transcription factor Sp1, bind nine contiguous base pairs (bp). To create a class of proteins which would be generally applicable to target unique sites within complex genomes, the present invention provides a polypeptide linker that fuses two three-finger proteins. Two six-fingered proteins were created and demonstrated to bind 18 contiguous bp of DNA in a sequence specific fashion. Expression of these proteins as fusions to activation or repression domains allows transcription to be specifically up or down modulated within cells. Polydactyl zinc finger proteins are broadly applicable as genome-specific transcriptional switches in gene therapy strategies and the development of novel transgenic plants and animals.

    Abstract: A method for controlling the gas flow within a digital mass flow controller. The method calculates a digitally enhanced flow rate signal that more accurately represents an actual flow rate through the digital mass flow controller. The digitally enhanced flow rate is calculated using a sensed flow rate signal output from a flow sensor, a scaled first derivative of the sensed flow rate signal, and a scaled, filtered second derivative of the sensed flow rate signal. A set-point signal is compared to the digitally enhanced flow rate signal to generate a digital error signal. The digital error signal is provided to a digitally realized PI (proportional integral) controller. The PI controller generates a digital control signal which is used to control a valve in the digital mass flow controller.

    Abstract: A method for creating a trench for high voltage isolation begins by forming a trench in the substrate having sidewalls and a bottom surface. Spacers are formed along the sidewalls of a trench with the spacers partially covering the bottom surface. A barrier layer is formed on the portion of the bottom surface not covered by the spacers. The spacers are then removed, exposing the bottom surface not covered by the barrier layer. The bottom surface is then further etched to create a second deeper trench which has sidewalls and bottom surface. An insulating layer is then conformally deposited to cover the surface of the substrate including filling the first and second trenches.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a completely implantable intracranial pressure monitor, which can couple to existing fluid shunting systems as well as other internal monitoring probes. The implant sensor produces an analog data signal which is then converted electronically to a digital pulse by generation of a spreading code signal and then transmitted to a location outside the patient by a radio-frequency transmitter to an external receiver. The implanted device can receive power from an internal source as well as an inductive external source. Remote control of the implant is also provided by a control receiver which passes commands from an external source to the implant system logic. Alarm parameters can be programmed into the device which are capable of producing an audible or visual alarm signal. The utility of the monitor can be greatly expanded by using multiple pressure sensors simultaneously or by combining sensors of various physiological types.

A method of writing an off-axis hologram includes: passing a laser beam through a spatial light modulator; and focusing the laser beam at a focal plane of a photorefractive crystal to impose a holographic diffraction grating pattern on the photorefractive crystal.
