  • Patent number: 8068020
Abstract: Provided is a method for designing, managing and executing response plans. Specific plan and resources are defined and a defined plan is executed either automatically or manually according to pre-determined or “real-time” parameter definitions. An executed plan notifies, by various user-defined means, actively or pre-defined parties in a near simultaneous fashion of security communications, notifications, directives and/or information. One embodiment of the system includes a component that requires a notified party to acknowledge a particular notification event by responding with a personal identification number (PIN) or calling a specified telephone number and entering the PIN. The system enables parties to be organized into groups based upon member profiles. Individual parties can be assigned to sub-groups, enabling specifically designed communications to go to the parties of any particular sub-group.

  • Patent number: 8056080
Abstract: Execution units process commands from one or more command queues. Once a command is available on the queue, each unit participating in the execution of the command atomically decrements the command's work groups remaining counter by the work group reservation size and processes a corresponding number of work groups within a work group range. Once all work groups within a range are processed, an execution unit increments a work group processed counter. The unit that increments the work group processed counter to the value stored in a work groups to be executed counter signals completion of the command. Each execution unit that access a command also marks a work group seen counter. Once the work groups processed counter equals the work groups to be executed counter and the work group seen counter equals the number of execution units, the command may be removed or overwritten on the command queue.

  • Patent number: 8051315
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus which deactivates both the AC as well as the DC component of power for various functions in a CPU. The CPU partitions dataflow registers and arithmetic units such that voltage can be removed from the upper portion of dataflow registers when the software is not utilizing same. Clock signals are also prevented from being applied to these non-utilized components. As an example, if a 64 bit CPU (processor unit) is to be used with both 32 and 64 bit software, the mentioned components may be partitioned in equal sized upper and lower portions. The logic signal for activating the removal of voltage may be obtained from a software-accessible architected control register designated as a machine state register in some CPUs. The same logic may be used in connection with removing voltage and clocks from other specialized functional components such as the floating point unit when software instructions do not presently require same.

  • Patent number: 8037341
Abstract: A system and associated method for determining a recovery time for a resource in a heterogeneous computing environment comprising interdependent resources. A graph for the resource representing all sequence dependencies and all group relations are created. The recovery time may be a cumulative startup time or a cumulative shutdown time of the resource considering interdependencies of the resource to other resources. The recovery time for all support resources having sequence dependencies with the resource is calculated and each node representing the support resources are removed from the graph. Then the recovery time for all member resources left in the graph that have group relations with the resource is calculated per a group type of the resource. The recovery time for the resource is a sum of the recovery time of all support resources, the recovery time of all member resources, and a unit recovery time of the resource.

  • Patent number: 8035644
Abstract: Provided is a method for providing animation in electronic communications. An image is generated by capturing multiple photographs from a camera or video camera typically fixed in one position. The first photograph is called the “naked photo.” Using a graphics program, photos subsequent to the naked photo are edited to cut an element common to the subsequent photos. The cut images are pasted into the naked photo as layers. The modified naked photo, including the layers, is stored as a web-enabled graphics file, which is then transmitted in conjunction with electronic communication. When the electronic communication is received, the naked photo is displayed and each of the layers is displayed and removed in the order that each was taken with a short delay between photos. In this manner, a movie is generated with much smaller files than is currently possible.

  • Patent number: 8032849
Abstract: Disclosed is a procedure or design approach for functional modules that may be used in connection with a multiprocessor integrated circuit chip. The approach includes keeping the dimensions of each module substantially the same and having the bus, power, clock and I/O connection configured the same on all modules. Further requirements for ease of use are to generalize the capability of each module as much as possible and to decentralize functions such as testing to be primarily performed within each module. The use of such considerations or rules substantially eases the design of a given type of custom chips, and based upon an initial chip design greatly facilitates the design of further custom chips, similar in application, but subsequent to the successful completion of the initial chip.

  • Patent number: 8024703
Abstract: View templates for use in generating application content are created by analyzing and categorizing existing application examples to derive reusable abstractions of application artifacts. Example application artifacts or source modules are categorized by role and function. Based on the categorized artifacts, a generalized, abstract view for the role and function is defined. View templates are created for each abstract view and contain static content and dynamic content that varies for each instance of the template. The view templates are stored in a template library for use in a model driven application generator.

  • Patent number: 8020154
Abstract: Precise exception handling relies on a precise subject state including an accurate program counter and register values of a subject processor. Subject code (17) is translated into target code (21) executable by a target processor (13). The generated target code (17) includes counterpart target instructions (214) associated with fault-vulnerable subject code instructions (174). Further, each of the counterpart target code instruction (214) is associated with recovery information (195). When an exception (e.g. a fault) occurs, the recovery information (195) is retrieved and used to recover a precise subject state, in particular by taking account of optimizations to generate the common-case target code (21). The precise subject state is then used to precisely handle the exception.

  • Patent number: 8001313
Abstract: A switch is provided that detects when a computer expansion card has been added, removed or changed. During operation, the switch is held in a depressed position by contact with a card. If the card is removed, the switch is raised and, when a second card is installed in the same slot, the switch is again depressed. The depression of the switch triggers a change signal that initiates the introduction of power to the slot for a period of time long enough for the hypervisor to detect the new device. A delay between a release and subsequent depression of the switch is measured such that when the switch is released enough time is provided to firmly seat a different card in the planar device. Following the delay, power is supplied to the slot so that the hypervisor detects the card and updates the current configuration parameters.

  • Patent number: 7970862
Abstract: Provided is a Web Services Response Template (WSRT) that addresses the problems of efficiency and robustness to change in Web Services response by allowing a requestor to explicitly specify, in a response template what information is to be returned by the request. A requestor of a web service gets just the information it needs; different requestors of the same operation may get different information; and a responder sends the requestor only what is asked for so there is no problem when new information becomes available. WSRTs are specifically designed to allow the type of control needed in program-to-program (P2P) communication, while being very efficiently and simply processed by a web service. Thus, WSRTs address difficulties that arise in typical distributed, P2P communication without adding much overhead or complexity to either a service requestor or a service provider.

  • Patent number: 7934204
Abstract: A partitioning technique utilized by a translator to divide the subject code space into regions, referred to hereafter as partitions, where each partition contains a distinct set of basic blocks of subject code and corresponding target code. The partitioning technique divides the translator's representation of subject code and subject code translations into non-overlapping regions of subject memory. In this manner, when the subject program modifies subject code, only those partitions actually affected by the self-modifying code need be discarded and all translations in unaffected partitions can be kept. This partitioning technique is advantageous in limiting the amount of target code that must be retranslated in response to self-modifying code operation. In another process, the partitioning technique allows multithreaded subject programs that also involve self-modifying code to perform code modification in a thread-safe manner.

  • Patent number: 7908492
Abstract: A data processing method accepts a removable storage media, which becomes electrically engaged with a system unit within the data processing system, after which the removable storage media and the hardware security unit mutually authenticate themselves. The removable storage media stores a private key of a first asymmetric cryptographic key pair and a public key of a second asymmetric cryptographic key pair that is associated with the hardware security unit, and the hardware security unit stores a private key of the second asymmetric cryptographic key pair and a public key of the first asymmetric cryptographic key pair that is associated with the removable storage media. In response to successfully performing the mutual authentication operation between the removable storage media and the hardware security unit, the system unit is enabled to invoke cryptographic functions on the hardware security unit while the removable storage media remains engaged with the system unit.

  • Patent number: 7886280
Abstract: There is disclosed a system for flattening hierarchically structured flows using a breadth-first approach. At each level of hierarchy of a hierarchically structured source flow, complex nodes are flattened by one level across the entire breadth of the flow. The results of this flattening are placed in a target flow, and any connections that existed in the source flow are re-established in the target flow in such a way that any data input into the target flow will be processed as if it had been input into the source flow. After a processing iteration, if there are still complex nodes remaining in the target flow, the target flow becomes the next source flow, and the process is repeated until the flow has been completely flattened.

  • Patent number: 7870494
Abstract: An apparatus, system and method of providing feedback to a presenter in an e-meeting in which visual information is being presented are provided. During presentation, the computer system of each participant is monitored to ensure that the window in which the visual information is being presented (i.e., the e-meeting window) is the window in focus. If the e-meeting window is not the window in focus, the presenter is notified. Generally, to notify the presenter, a status message is sent from the computer system on which the e-meeting window is not the window in focus to a server. There, status messages from different computer systems are combined together. The combined status message is then periodically sent to the presenter.

  • Patent number: 7827375
Abstract: A data structure, method and system are provided incorporating a general purpose memory allocator and defensive heap memory manager. This provides an ability to reliably detect various types of memory errors, dynamically enable or disable memory debugging, enhance success of read and write operations using various memory verification techniques. Further, through separation of control information associated with allocated and free chunks of memory from the chunks themselves (separation of metadata from actual data), enhanced protection of vital information about the heap memory layout in general is provided. The heap memory manager uses read, write, and execute protected heap header walls and pool header walls and may, for each pool and memory block, separately use hidden front and back Memory Debug Information Areas (MDIAs) with checksums and well-known signature fields thereby enhancing overall memory management.
