Abstract: The present invention relates to methods of obtaining Z. mobilis mutant strains that are more tolerant to one or more inhibitors or more capable of efficiently fermenting one or more carbohydrates. Such inhibitors include ethanol, aliphatic acids, such as acetic acid, formic acid; furan derivatives, such as 2-furaldehyde, 2-furoic acid; and phenolic compounds, such as vanillin and hydroxybenzoic acid. Such carbohydrates may include xylose, arabinose, mannose and mixtures thereof. These mutant strains may be employed to, for example, effectively and efficiently prepare ethanol from biomass.
Abstract: Stable, concentrated aqueous suspensions of ortho-phenylphenol (OPP) which contribute minimal chemical oxygen demand and methods of preparing and using said suspensions in biocidal applications have been discovered. The formulations comprise from about 3 to about 70 weight percent of OPP suspended in about 30 to about 97 weight percent water in the presence of a suspending amount of a thixotrope that exhibits Ellis-Plastic behavior.
Abstract: Stable, concentrated aqueous suspensions of 2,2-dibromo-3-nitrilopropionamide which contribute minimal chemical oxygen demand to systems treated therewith and methods of preparing and using said suspensions in biocidal applications have been discovered. The formulations comprise from about 3 to about 70 weight percent 2,2-dibromo-3-nitrilopropionamide suspended in about 30 to about 97 weight percent water in the presence of a suspending amount of a thixotrope that exhibits Ellis-Plastic behavior, such as xantham gum and locust bean gum, at a pH of from about 1 to about 4.
Abstract: Disclosed is a surface-modified polymeric adsorbent material comprising a porous post-crosslinked polymer as a substrate and at least one surface-modifying polymer. The porous post-crosslinked polymer comprises a polymer of at least one monoethylenically unsaturated monomer, wherein the polymer has been post-crosslinked in a swollen state in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. A process for preparing the surface-modified polymeric adsorbent materials, and the use of these materials in the separation of organic compounds, enantioselective synthesis and resolution of racemic mixtures are also disclosed.
