  • Patent number: 4138246
Abstract: The sodium content of aluminum melt is reduced efficiently to within acceptable limits by filtering the primary metal from the electrolytic cell through a loosely packed filter bed of granular material which in part comprises carbon. The treatment is carried out before alloy additions are made, and the temperature of the melt before entering the filter is higher than 780.degree. C.

  • Patent number: 4124506
Abstract: An improved method for the filtration of molten metal for use in the production of castings is disclosed in which a ladling crucible provided with a ceramic foam filter is inserted into a furnace crucible which is filled with molten metal so that the molten metal passes through the filter into the ladling crucible cavity so that oxide films and other impurities are removed prior to ladling.

  • Patent number: 4116606
Abstract: Method and apparatus for the preparation of hollow plastic articles wherein improved temperature control of the parison is obtained by altering the heat content of a parison by a first, temperature controlled mold and core, transferring the parison to a second, temperature controlled mold, and substantially equalizing the temperature distribution of the parison by heat exchange with the second mold.

  • Patent number: 4111763
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for preparing aluminum and aluminum alloy objects for plating which results in an article which exhibits improved corrosion resistant characteristics. The process includes anodizing the aluminum object in an acid bath, placing the anodized object in contact with a chemical which impregnates and is absorbed by the oxidized crystalline surface and finally exposing the treated aluminum object to heat so that the impregnating chemical is pyrolyzed to form an electronically conductive oxide thereby permitting the plating process while preserving an anodic coating of high ionic resistance.

  • Patent number: 4093782
Abstract: Corrosion resistant brazed aluminum composite. The core alloy consists essentially of an aluminum base alloy containing from 0.05 to 0.4% chromium, from 0.02 to 0.9% manganese, up to 0.2% iron, up to 0.1% silicon and the balance essentially aluminum. The cladding brazing alloy consists essentially of an aluminum base alloy containing 4 to 14% silicon, up to 3% magnesium, up to 0.2% bismuth, balance essentially aluminum.

  • Patent number: 4092153
Abstract: The disclosure teaches an improvement in the filtration of molten metal especially aluminum using a removable vertically disposed filter plate and at least one fluxing gas inlet positioned in such a manner so as to introduce fluxing gas into the filter plate. The filter plate is provided with a bevelled peripheral surface mating with a like bevelled surface in a filter chamber so that the filter plate can be conveniently inserted in the chamber and removed therefrom. Fluxing gas is provided to the melt through the inlet and flows through the filter plate so as to assure extensive contact with the melt. Dissolved gases and non-metallic inclusions are thereby abstracted and removed from the melt.

  • Patent number: 4075303
Abstract: Ceramic foams possessing controlled permeability and uniformity are prepared by a combined rolling operation of impregnating an open-celled organic polymer foam material possessing a predetermined permeability and resilience with a fluid aqueous slurry of a thixotropic ceramic composition and immediate passage through at least two controlled roll gaps, wherein the rolls are preset to effect a temporary compression ranging from about 50 to 90% for the first pass and 70 to 90% for the second pass. The resulting material is thereby uniformly impregnated with the required amount of slurry, and is then dried and heated to remove the organic foam component. The foams prepared in accordance with the present invention are useful as filters for molten metals, especially aluminum and its alloys.

  • Patent number: 4052198
Abstract: The disclosure teaches an improvement in the degassing and filtration of molten metal, especially aluminum, using an apparatus which employs a pair of sequentially placed, removable filter-type plates and at least one fluxing gas inlet positioned therebetween. Fluxing gas is provided to the melt through the inlet and flows upward through the first of said plates into counter-current contact with the melt. Said plate serves to break up said fluxing gas into a fine dispersion to assure its intimate and extensive contact with the melt. Dissolved gases and non-metallic inclusions are thereby abstracted and removed from the melt.
