Abstract: A method of detecting at least one analyte in extra-cellular spaces includes the step of inserting a microprobe through the stratum corneum toward the stratum basale of the skin of a subject into extra-cellular spaces containing interstitial fluid having at least one analyte to be detected, said microprobe having a diameter at its tip no larger than approximately 10-50 microns. The method further includes optically testing for a predetermined analyte in the extra-cellular space adjacent the distal end of the microprobe without drawing a sample of the interstitial fluid. Preferably the microprobe body includes a sensor layer covering the distal optical tip of the microprobe body, the sensor layer being adapted to interact with a predetermined analyte to be detected in the interstitial fluid, and an optical detector responsive to interaction of the sensor layer with the predetermined analyte to signal detection of said predetermined analyte.
Abstract: Color altering food products and methods which utilize a plurality of coloring factors containing dyes and/or lakes in combination with various substrates. Coloring factors with varying degrees of responsiveness to moisture are combined to provide selectively varying color altering effects in either the product, a food substance which contains moisture that the product contacts, or in a consumer's mouth. These effect may also be controlled to occur in varying combinations as well as with varying delays in onset. Additional control of aspects of the color altering effect's activation following exposure to elevated temperatures is provided.
Abstract: A catheter and needle system includes a solid piercing needle, a catheter, and a needle tip enclosure, as well as a method of utilization. The solid needle reduces the possibility of transmitting infectious agents to a user otherwise resulting from accidental needle punctures. The system has two configurations, a first for inserting the assembly into a patient, and a second for withdrawing and disposing of the piercing needle. The catheter has means for receiving, delivering and viewing fluids at the insertion site. The needle and enclosure operate cooperatively to enable medical procedures to be conducted without hinderance, and to automatically cleanse and enclose the piercing portion of the needle upon withdrawal. The system also provides for the safe withdrawal of the needle without the need to disturb the catheter once it is inserted.
