Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing error correction capability to longitudinal position data are disclosed. Initially, data are encoded via a set of even LPOS words and a set of odd LPOS words. The encoded data are then decoded by generating a set of syndrome bits for each of the LPOS words. A determination is then made as to whether or not there is an error within one of the LPOS words based on its corresponding syndrome bits.

Abstract: A method, apparatus and program storage device for providing an anchor pointer in an operating system context structure for improving the efficiency of accessing thread specific data is provided. A kernel thread context structure is maintained in memory. A thread accesses a pointer memory in the kernel thread context structure and sets a value within the pointer memory that addresses data specific to the thread.

Abstract: A controller for use at a node of a clustered computer apparatus includes an exception detection component for detecting an exception raised by a service component at the node; a quiesce component responsive to the exception detection component for quiescing lease-governed activity by the service component prior to termination of a lease; a lease control component responsive to the quiesce component for pre-expiry relinquishing of the lease; and a communication component responsive to the lease control component for communicating the pre-expiry relinquishing of the lease to one or more further nodes of the clustered computer apparatus. The controller may further include a second communication component for receiving a communication indicating the pre-expiry relinquishing of a lease; a second lease control component responsive to the communication to control failure processing; and a second service component to perform a service in place of the service component at the node.

Abstract: There is provided a compression system configured to compress logical data objects into one or more accommodation blocks with a predefined size, and a method of operating thereof. The compression system includes a compression engine capable of compressing input data with the help of sequential encoding one or more input strings and a counter operatively coupled to the compression engine. The counter is configured to keep its ongoing value indicative of a number of input bytes in one or more strings successfully encoded into a given accommodation block; and, responsive to unsuccessful compression of a string into the given accommodation block, to provide the compression engine with information indicative of starting point in the input stream for encoding into the next accommodation block, thus giving rise to a “start indication”.

Abstract: Some embodiments of a product display system can be employed in a retail store or other product storage environment to maintain one or more rows of products in an organized manner on a shelf. In some circumstances, the display system can be readily assembled to the shelf and thereafter receive products so that the products can remain visible and advanced toward the front portion of the shelf.

Abstract: A utility cart assembly comprises a shopping cart, a storage unit, and at least one coupling strap. The shopping cart includes a basket and wheels positioned below the basket. The storage unit is coupled to and extends substantially entirely outside the basket. The storage unit defines a first panel positioned adjacent the basket, a second panel opposite the first panel, and a compartment defined between the first panel and the second panel. The second panel defines an opening and the compartment is accessible through the opening. The at least one coupling strap facilitates coupling of the storage unit to the basket. Abstract: A data storage apparatus includes a processor, a write cache in operable communication with the processor, an auxiliary storage device in operable communication with the write cache, and a temporary power source in electrical communication with each of the processor, write cache, and auxiliary storage device for supplying power in the event of a loss of primary, external power. The auxiliary storage device is dimensioned to have sufficient size for holding dirty pages cached in the write cache, and the temporary power source is configured with sufficient energy for, subsequent to the loss of the external power, powering the processor, the write cache, and the auxiliary storage device for an entire duration of a backup process.

Abstract: A method for implementing a sparing policy for a server by a management module in communication with the server and a plurality of additional servers is provided. The server is designated as a spare server. The spare server is maintained in a powered-off, standby state. A need for the spare server is determined. At least one of a basic input output system (BIOS) and an operating system (OS) for the spare server is selected. A volume operational on the spare server is selected for a sparing operation.

A fast replication query is issued to a track in which the volume table of contents (VTOC) resides. If the query determines that a background copy is in progress, a volume having the track is designated as unusable. An apparatus maintains a valid volume table of contents (VTOC) written to in a fast replication relationship. A controller issues a fast replication query to a track in which the volume table of contents (VTOC) resides. If the query determines that a background copy is in process, a volume having the track is designated as unusable.

Abstract: A transaction product assembly includes a transaction product, a mechanical article, and a coupling member. The transaction product includes an account identifier statically connected thereto. The account identifier links the transaction product to at least one of an account and a record and is machine readable by a point-of-sale terminal. The mechanical article includes a body, an auxiliary member, and an actuating mechanism. The actuating mechanism extends from within the body to a position external to the body. User interaction with the actuating mechanism is configured to induce movement of the auxiliary member relative to the body of the mechanical article. The coupling member is secured to the mechanical article and configured to be secured to the transaction product such that movement of the auxiliary member relative to the body causes corresponding movement of the transaction product. Abstract: A stored-value card includes a housing, a light circuit and an account identifier. The housing includes a cover and a base. The cover and the base each define a respective primary panel and a plurality of side walls extending from the respective primary panel. The plurality of side walls defined by the base abut the plurality of side walls defined by the cover. The light circuit includes a light and a switch. The light circuit is substantially enclosed between the base and the cover, and the light is configured to emit illumination upon user interaction with the switch. The account identifier links the stored-value card to an account or record such that value from the account or record can be used as payment toward a purchase of one or more of goods and services. Stored-value card assemblies and methods of using a stored-value card are also disclosed.

Abstract: Embodiments for data tagging in a computing environment are provided. A write operation in an operating system (OS) file system level storage layer is intercepted. A set of signatures in a sub-chunk level is calculated. The set of signatures are aligned to the beginning of an OS file system-level object and stored in a memory location, such as a cache, along with file system information relating to the write operation and to the file system-level object that the data is written into. Following file system processing, and as the data is written into storage in blocks, the write operation is intercepted in the block level storage layer. A secondary set of signatures in a sub-block level is calculated using a common algorithm used to create the original set of signatures. The sets of signatures are compared against each other, and blocks of the data having matching signatures are tagged with the file system information stored in the memory location.

Abstract: A dual line active automatic transfer switch (ATS) is provided. A first switch structure is connected to a first PSU of the plurality of PSUs, and operable between a first position connecting a first input line of the dual line and a second position connecting a second input line of the dual line with the one PSU. A second switch structure is connected to at least one additional PSU of the plurality of PSUs, and operable between a third position connecting the first input line and a fourth position connecting the second input line with the at least one additional PSU. The first and second switch structures are operable between each of the first, second, third, and fourth positions to alternatively connect each of the plurality of PSUs to one of the first and second input lines and connect, when each of the dual lines is charged, both of the first and second input lines to at least one of the plurality of PSUs.

Abstract: Embodiments for facilitating data transfer between a nonvolatile storage (NVS) write cache and a pool of target storage devices are provided. Each target storage device in the pool of target storage devices is determined as one of a hard disk drive (HDD) and a solid-state drive (SSD) device, and classified into one of a SSD rank group and a HDD rank group. If no data is received in the NVS write cache for a predetermined time to be written to a target storage device classified in the SSD rank group, a threshold of available space in the NVS write cache is set to allocate at least a majority of the available space to the HDD rank group. Upon receipt of a write request for the SSD rank group, the threshold of the available space is reduced to allocate a greater portion of the available space to the SSD rank group.
