Abstract: A transmissive display arrangement is provided comprising an array of cells, video controlling means, backlight means and backlight controlling means. The video s controlling means is configured to derive an adjusted video signal based on an initial video signal. The initial video signal represents a frame to be displayed by the display arrangement. The backlight means provides a backlight signal to the array in response to a backlight control signal. The backlight control signal is associated with the frame. The backlight controlling means is coupled to the video controller and derives the backlight control signal from the initial video signal and the adjusted video signal.
Abstract: Chip cards comprising a microprocessor and a memory are used for various applications. It is also desirable that such chip cards can be used for different applications. This requires a strict and reliable separation of the various user programs so that mutual accessing is not possible. This is achieved notably by subdivision into a system mode, in which all access rights are free, and a user mode which is adjusted by way of a given bit in the program status word. This mode bit controls inter alia a separation in the bus for the special function registers so that given registers are not accessible in the user mode. These registers may contain information enabling the access to given memory sections only, so that this access cannot be modified in the user mode.
Abstract: A home theater comprises a video processing sub-system and a PC capable of controlling the sub-system. The sub-system has a de-interlacer/line doubler and the PC has a graphics controller with scaling capability. The combination of the line doubler and the scaler is made to function as a line quadrupler.

Abstract: Broadcasting of different tariff periods in a telephone system. Subscribers of a telecommunication system are advised of service charging tariffs of services to said subscribers. In the telecommunication system, a service charging tariff message is sent to subscriber stations operated by the subscribers. The service charging tariff message comprises a starting time of a future tariff period and a tariff indication of the future tariff period. A subscriber station receiving such a service charging tariff message processes the starting time and the tariff indication. The service charging tariff information is stored and retrieved, and is displayed on a display of the subscriber station. The tariff indication comprises an early indication of off-peak time charge free minutes, usually forming part of a calling plan of a subscriber, which off-peak time free charge minutes can be spent during peak time.
Abstract: The invention relates to a wireless network which includes at least one base station (1 to 3) and a plurality of associated terminals (4 to 14) for the exchange of useful data and control data. According to the invention, the base station (1 to 3) is arranged to transmit the starting instant of a signaling sequence to at least one terminal (4 to 14). In order to evaluate the signaling sequences transmitted by the terminals, the base station (1 to 3) includes a device (21, 22) for correlating a received signaling sequence and for detecting the pulse arising from a received and correlated signaling sequence.
Abstract: Signal correction in a bipolar transistor circuit having a base-emitter voltage and a non-linear output signal corresponding to a detectable characteristic is improved by correcting non-linearity in the signal at third and/or higher-orders. According to an example embodiment of the present invention, the output of the transistor is corrected as a function of the base-emitter voltage, the non-linear output signal and a generated non-linearity. The generated non-linearity is adapted to cancel the non-linearity of the non-linear output signal when added thereto. Various implementations of the present invention are applicable to a variety of applications, each of which may have selected characteristics that are accounted for by the generated non-linearity, which is selectively adapted for each particular application. In this manner, third and higher-order corrections can be made, and the detection of characteristics such as data, temperature and other terms is improved.

Abstract: A circuit arrangement and method utilize a programmable shifter coupled downstream of a multiplier to shift the product of an input value and a pre-scaled filter coefficient that implements a predetermined filter function. Through the judicious selection of an appropriate pre-scaled filter coefficient and a shift distance to shift the product, truncation errors associated with a digital implementation of a filter may be minimized, offering improved filter response compared to other discrete filter implementations with like coefficient resolution, or in the alternative, permitting acceptable filter response to be maintained with reduced coefficient resolution. Moreover, where the coefficient resolution is reduced, a filter may be implemented using relatively less space, less power consumption and less delay than in comparable conventional designs.
Abstract: With respect to a particular facility semaphore-based synchronizing is executed among a first station and one or more second stations. For each station a single bivalent semaphore is provided. The first station checks all second station semaphores as having a second state relative to its own semaphore's first state. It then executes a first accessing operation and flips the first state. Otherwise it foregoes the first accessing operation. Any second station checks the first station semaphore as having the second state relative to its own semaphore's second state. It then executes a second accessing operation an d flips the latter state. Otherwise it foregoes the second accessing operation.
Abstract: A power consumption reduction method for a mobile radio station in a digital mobile radio system is proposed. During a dedicated mode of the mobile radio station in which the mobile radio station should perform power measurements on BCCH carriers of neighboring cells, as many as possible measurements are squeezed in a single frame, within the stabilizing capabilities of a frequency synthesizer comprised in the mobile radio station. Next succeeding frames are freed of power measurements. In the time intervals freed from power measurements, the mobile radio station adopts a power down mode so that considerable power savings are achieved.
Abstract: The present invention involves a network polling protocol which treats the network as a logical ring or linear sequence of nodes linked together so that a polling request is simply propagated down or around the network one node at a time until a complete inventory of active nodes is achieved. The protocols also includes procedures for curing or repairing breaks in the linking protocol and for adding new nodes to the linking protocol. The linking protocol can also be used to establish hierarchal linked networks where top level hierarchies includes addresses to a permanent member of a linked network and bottom level hierarchies are a given linked network.
Abstract: A method is provided for compensating for high-latency computer clients in a multi-player electronic game played on a plurality of terminals connected by a network. A latency value is determined for computer clients operating the terminals. Then a latency compensation factor is determined from the latency value for each client computer. The playing modality of a client computer can then be adjusted based on the latency compensation factor.
Abstract: A power control apparatus for minimizing energy losses in a radio transmitter uses a variable-output switched-mode power supply to control a voltage applied to an output power amplifier stage of the radio transmitter. By monitoring a current drawn by the output power amplifier operating in a Class D mode, an error signal is generated that regulates the applied voltage, such that only a minimally-sufficient voltage is supplied to the output amplifier for a given transmitted output power.
Abstract: A wireless communication device is disclosed for establishing communication with a remote terminal device through a cordless or a mobile base station. The wireless communication device has a cordless section and a mobile section. The cordless section is for communicating with a remote terminal device through the cordless base station in a cordless mode used for a cordless call. The mobile section is for communicating with the remote terminal device through the mobile base station in a mobile mode used for a mobile call. A processor of the wireless communication device detects a drop of a current call using the cordless service, for example, and re-establishes the communication using the mobile service. The user may be prompted prior to call re-establishment. For outgoing calls, the last dialled number is stored and re-dialled for call re-establishment. For incoming calls, the caller ID is used for call re-establishment.
Abstract: A spread spectrum communication device having a channel estimator and a rake receiver with a number of rake fingers. The spread spectrum communication device is used in a direct sequence spread spectrum, code division multiple access system. In the spread spectrum system, symbols are spread by a pseudo-noise reference sequence, with a chip rate substantially higher than a symbol rate of the symbols, the spread symbols are modulated onto a carrier, and the carrier modulated signals are transmitted over an air-interface. The air-interface tends to produce multipath components of the transmitted signal. The spread spectrum communication device receives the multipath components, and demodulates symbols intended for it, by de-spreading the received signals with a locally generated pseudo-noise reference sequence, and coherently adding multipath resolved components intended for it.

Abstract: A method, a circuit arrangement and an apparatus are provided for evaluating an input data signal transmitted by load modulation. A complex data signal is derived from the input data and a mean value signal of the complex data signal is thereafter derived. A complex signal without mean value is also formed from the difference between the complex data signal and the mean value signal of the complex data signal. A first and second quadratic error signals are derived and subsequently a slope signal is derived from the first and second quadratic signals. The method also comprises deriving an information signal by comparing the imaginary part signal without mean value with a decision threshold signal. The information signal indicates whether a value of the input data signal has been generated in a loaded state or an unloaded state during the load modulation.
