  • Patent number: 7649174
Abstract: A portable thermography camera system (100) renders a video image of a survey scene over a narrow spectral bandwidth corresponding with an absorption band of a gas to be detected in the video image. The camera system forms a scene image onto a focal plane array (108) and generates a corrected image signal (162) corresponding with irradiance values at a plurality of locations of the scene image. The camera system further generates a temporally filtered image signal (168) corresponding with a temporal characteristics of the image signal (162) over a selected number of prior image frames. A difference block (166) reduces the temporally filtered image signal (168) by a scaling factor and produces a difference image by subtracting the scaled temporally filtered image signal from the corrected image signal (162). The displayed difference signal improves the visibility of the gas to be detected.

  • Patent number: 7642742
Abstract: A fuel cell includes a removable and replaceable fuel supply having fuel disposed therein. A system for monitoring various parameters of the fuel such as temperature, pressure, and the levels of dissolved oxygen is provided. A plurality of sensors is disposed on the fuel supply side that is capable of communicating with a controller and memory on the fuel cell side. In another embodiment, at least one sensor for measuring a system parameter of the fuel communicates with an RFID tag either remotely or via a hardwired link. The sensor and/or the RFID tag may be coated with a substance impervious to the caustic fuel. An RFID reader station collects the data. The controller may be included to use the data in real time to alter system parameters, such as fuel pumping rates or a bleed off, or to trigger a signal, such as to notify a user of an empty fuel supply.

  • Patent number: 7617842
Abstract: Valves for connecting fuel supplies to a device are disclosed. The fuel supplies can be a pressurized or non-pressurized cartridge that can be used with any device, such as fuel cells or fuel refilling apparatus. The valve includes face seals to minimize the amount of fuel remaining in the valve when the fuel supply is separated from the device. In one embodiment, the valve includes deformable members including sealing surfaces, where the flow paths through the valve are sealed and unsealed by the deformation of the deformable members. In another embodiment, the female valve component includes a shortened body to limit the volume of fuel remaining in the valve. The female valve component also includes a cap with slots formed therein so that residual fuel can drain from the valve component into a fuel reservoir.

  • Patent number: 7587896
Abstract: An integrated sensor assembly (10) includes a gas compression unit (104) having a first longitudinal axis (308) and a gas expansion unit (112) having a second longitudinal axis (366) and the gas expansion unit is disposed with its second longitudinal axis orthogonal to the gas compression unit first longitudinal axis (308). A rotary motor (302) includes a rotor (324) supported for rotation with respect to a motor rotation axis (328) and the sensor assembly configuration is folded to orient the motor rotation axis substantially parallel with the second longitudinal axis (366). A motor shaft (320) extending from the rotor includes a first and second mounting features (336, 340) disposed substantially parallel with and radially offset from the motor rotation axis (328). A first drive coupling couples between the first mounting feature (336) and a gas compression piston (304) and drives the piston (304) with a reciprocal linear translation directed along the first longitudinal axis (308).

  • Patent number: 7555908
Abstract: A refrigeration device includes a gas displacing piston (362) movable within a gas expander cylinder (364). The volume of a gas expansion space (362) is varied as the gas displacing piston (362) is moved over an expansion stroke range. The device includes a compression spring (622) disposed to bias the gas displacing piston (362) toward a compression stroke top end position (85). A cable element (606) extends into the gas expansion cylinder (364) and attaches to the gas displacing piston (362). A motive drive device (302) applies a tensioning force to the cable (606) and the tension force opposes the spring biasing force and moves the gas displacing piston (362) to a compression stroke bottom end position (83).

  • Patent number: 7537024
Abstract: A shut-off valve or connecting valve capable of connecting a fuel supply to a fuel cell is disclosed. The valve comprises a first valve component and a second valve component. Each valve component has an outer housing and a biased slidable member disposed inside the housing forming an internal seal. During the connection process, the two valve components establish an inter-component seal. Afterward, in one suitable embodiment the slidable member moves inward and opens the internal seal in the valve component to establish a flow path. In another embodiment, the slidable member moves inward and exposes a first filler and the first filler abuts a second filler in the other valve component to establish a flow path. In other embodiments, at least one valve component is sized and dimensioned to limit access to the internal seal.

  • Patent number: 7514026
Abstract: The present invention concerns a method for recycling used floor covering. Post-consumer or post-industrial fibrous floor coverings are shredded to form a fibrous dispersion. The dispersion is maintained at a content of about 20-65% low-melt thermoplastic. The shredded fibrous dispersion is conveyed into a chute feeder which converts it into a batt that is heated, compressed, and cooled to form a durable backing particularly suitable for flooring applications. The batt comprises vertical layers or strata of fibers to provide additional cushion for the backing. Additionally, a portion of the shredded fibrous dispersion can also be diverted and used to form a face layer and/or adhesive layer for a reconstituted floor covering.

  • Patent number: 7497978
Abstract: A process for making abrasion-resistant composites is disclosed. The process comprises the steps of providing a fibrous sheet containing a high density of relatively short staple fibers having a decitex under 6.6; needle-punching the staple layer and applying an adhesive containing layer; followed by the application of heat and pressure to the composite to form a thin consolidated and abrasion-resistant back-face layer on the composite. Preferably, the adhesive layer is penetrated by the needled fibers during the needling step and the product is shrunk in area by 20-50% before the consolidation step. Also optionally, the consolidated layer is abraded or perforated to create micro-pores that are permeable to gases and capable of containing liquids under low-to-moderate pressures.
