  • Patent number: 4169140
Abstract: A new antibiotic SF-1771 substance is produced by cultivating a new strain, Streptomyces toyocaensis SF-1771, in a liquid culture medium under aerobic conditions. This antibiotic may be isolated from the fermentation broth by treating the broth filtrate with a synthetic adsorbent resin for adsorption of the active compound and eluting the resin with an aqueous alcohol or aqueous acetone, followed by chromatographic purification. SF-1771 substance is a copper-containing antibiotic which shows antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis. Removal of the copper component from SF-1771 substance by treatment with hydrogen sulfide, an alkali metal sulfide or a copper-chelating agent gives SF-1771-B substance containing no copper component which shows antibacterial activity as high as but a toxicity lower than SF-1771 substance.

  • Patent number: 4160322
Abstract: A method of constructing an orthodontic appliance to be placed in a patient's mouth so as to effect desired tooth repositioning which includes the steps of initially making an impression of the patient's malocclusion and repositioning the teeth of the model so as to form an ideal model. A template is fabricated in accordance with the ideal model to properly position orthodontic brackets upon the ideal model so as to, in effect, ideally position the brackets relative to the teeth of the ideal model as well as with respect to each other. The brackets are then transferred from the ideal model to the patient's teeth with the aid of a transfer registration mold. The template is also used to guide fabrication of ideal arch wires which are to be selectively secured to the brackets at various stages of orthodontic treatment.

  • Patent number: 4150675
Abstract: An osteotome includes an arcuate cutting blade portion and a planar cutting blade portion integrally secured thereto. The arcuate portion is defined from a locus of a perfect circle and is axially elongated relative to the planar blade so as to permit the arcuate blade to be reained within an initially cut portion of a bone while the entire osteotome is rotated to a new, second position in order to perform a second cutting of the bone. The two cuttings of the bone serve to remove a section of the original bone, and in this manner, when the bone sections are repositioned relative to one another, the same will be precisely aligned so as to correct the original bone deformity.
