Abstract: The reading method includes the step of successively performing a first and at least a second scan of an optical code along a first and, respectively, second scanning line parallel to each other. More specifically, the first and second scan of the optical code are performed by generating a first and a second laser light ray movable respectively in a first and second scanning plane distinct from and intersecting each other.
Abstract: A portable code reading device, in particular for reading optical codes, wherein a hand-held casing supports an electronic viewing device for generating signals related to the image of an examined optical code, and an electronic circuit cooperating with the viewing device to generate first digital data representing the examined optical code. The reading device also has a manually operated pointing device for generating second digital data by which to control a pointer of a remote processing device having a graphic interface usable in conjunction with the pointer.
Abstract: A method of compensating the edge positions of a signal generated by scanning elements of a bar code, the method including the steps of lighting the code and determining the light diffused by the code to generate in response a signal having a substantially alternating waveform defined by a sequence of high-amplitude portions separated by and joined to low-amplitude portions by steeply sloping edges of the waveform. A number of local minimum and maximum points of the waveform are determined to determine coordinates defining approximate edge positions. The coordinates are then corrected to generate modified coordinates, each relative to a corrected position of the edge compensating for any shift in the edge induced by blurring of the signal.

Abstract: A method of estimating the mid-points of elements of a bar code, wherein the code is illuminated, and the light diffused by the code is picked up to generate in response a signal having a substantially alternating waveform profile defined by high-amplitude zones alternating with low-amplitude zones; each high-amplitude zone corresponding to a space of the code, and each low-amplitude zone corresponding to a bar of the code. The signal is then quantized to obtain a discretized waveform having a number of local maximum and minimum points, and an observation window of a given width is defined by which to observe the waveform. The observation window is positioned on the maximum and minimum points of the discretized waveform to eliminate redundant maximum and minimum points within the observation window.

Abstract: A cigarette lighter is disclosed. It operates by means a lever which opens a valve to release gas from a tank and a spark means to ignite the released gas.The lighter has a safety mechanism which prevents unintentional operation of the lighter, eg. by a child, but which an adult can easily overcome.The safety device is in the form of a resilient leg, one end of which is attached to the lever and the other end of which, in the non-use position, engages a surface of a block mounted in the body of the lighter.
Abstract: A shutter, as used on fire engines, consists of a number of laths (13), which are hingedly connected together and can be drawn across an opening by handle and can be latched in the closed condition by a latch. The handle, which extends across the shutter, being formed by the mounting bracket (12), which is mounted on a lath (13), and the latch member (11) which is hingedly connected to the mounting bracket (12), thereby reducing the number of parts required and the need for separate opening and closing handles. The latch member (11) co-operates with a keeper (18) which is mounted on the structure (10) which surrounds the opening thereby latching the shutter in position.
Abstract: An apparatus and method of detecting the presence of a flat tire on a vehicle. A pair of spaced apart pressure sensing assemblies positioned on a roadway are operative to produce a signal corresponding to the pressure applied to one or more pressure sensing elements in each of the pressure sensing assemblies. Comparison of the pressure applied to each of the pressure sensing elements with a value corresponding to a normal non-flat tire indicates the condition of the tires.
Abstract: A system is provided for mounting bindings to a snowboard. The system allows relative distance between the mounted bindings to be much more accurately adjusted by the user, making snowboarding mare enjoyable and safer. The system involves a front and a rear set of parallel cavities formed on the top surface of a snowboard which accept nuts which slide in each cavity. Each nut receives a corresponding bolt from the binding to be mounted. The nuts can be easily replaced if stripped, obviating the need for frequent expensive repairs to fix stripped nuts, as is common with typical snowboards.
Abstract: A substantially weld free frame bracket for connecting a suspension to the frame rail of a heavy duty vehicle which includes a plate member and an attached cradle having pivotally bolted to it one or more beams, the pivotal connecting bolts serving as the connection to the plate member. A cross-member connects opposing brackets on either side of the vehicle.

Abstract: A degradable container is disclosed as containing 60 wt % to 70 wt % of a plant fiber, from 10 wt % to 30 wt % of an adhesive and from 0.1 wt % to 5 wt % of a demoulding agent, in which the adhesive is a modified urea-formaldehyde resin. A method of forming a degradable container is also disclosed as including the steps of (a) grinding a plant fiber to a size smaller than a pre-determined size; (b) mixing grounded plant fiber obtained under step (a) with a demoulding agent to form a premixed material; (c) mixing said premixed material with an adhesive into a powder form; (d) press-moulding said powder obtained under step (c) a first time under a pressure of 5-80 MPa; and (e) press-moulding said powder a second time under a pressure of 1.5-16 MPa into said container.

Abstract: A method wherein an image of an object bearing an optical code is divided into a number of elementary images for which a brightness gradient vector is calculated. The calculated gradients of a magnitude above a given threshold value (Glim) are transformed to eliminate the information relative to the direction of the vector, while maintaining the information relative to the path of the vector. The transformed and quantized vectors of a subimage including a number of elementary images are added to calculate a total gradient vector, which is compared with reference values to select significant subimages containing a sufficient number of gradient vectors of substantially the same path.
