  • Patent number: 4976204
Abstract: A portable supporting and stabilizing structure is disclosed that is particularly well suited for securely maintaining a preselected orientation of a utility surface, such as, for example, a work surface, an equipment mounting surface, or a food tray by, and adjacent to, the thighs of a seated user of the utility surface. The structure includes a supporting section for support of the utility surface and a stabilizing section connected with the supporting section and receivable adjacent to the thighs of a user of the structure so that, when force is exerted by the user's thighs against the stabilizing section of the structure, changes in orientation of the surface are resisted thus securely maintaining the position of the utility surface during use thereof. Structures are disclosed which are collapsible and which are selectively configurable for employing inward or outward exertion of the thighs by the user against the stabilizing section of the structure to stabilize the utility surface.

  • Patent number: 4976065
Abstract: A speed control apparatus for controlling the rate of motion of a door is disclosed which includes a shaft connected with the door by a gear train for causing rotation of the shaft at a preselected relative rate of rotation related to the rate of motion of the door by a preselected ratio, a braking assembly including a brake drum spaced from the shaft and first and second brake shoes pivotably connected at one end thereof with a carrying member attached to the shaft and having a single biasing spring adjustably connected between the other ends thereof, the brake shoes having a contact surface made of a non-asbestos friction material for contacting the brake drum when a selected rate of rotation of the shaft is exceeded, and an improved housing which is more efficiently sealable against invasion of moisture into the housing and the escape of lubricants from the housing.

  • Patent number: 4936169
Abstract: A device for positioning and applying fasteners, such as screws, to a work object is disclosed which includes an applicator positioned adjacent to a rotatable cylinder. The cylinder is configured to hold a plurality of fasteners therein and to position a selected fastener for engagement with the applicator by rotation of the cylinder. The fasteners may be prepackaged to assure ease of loading in the cylinder and more uniform initial orientation of the fasteners in the device. The device may be configured for either manual or machine driven operation.

  • Patent number: 4924880
Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for achieving improved dental anesthesia utilizing electronic stimulation applied through electrodes positioned inside the mouth of a patient. Each electrode includes an insulating base of foam material with an adhesive at one side thereof to retain one end of an electrical lead in contact with an electrically conductive elastomer, which elastomer has a surrounding outer layer of adhesive for maintaining the elastomer positioned inside the mouth of a patient. A transcutaneous nerve stimulator is utilized to generate the stimulating output signal, which signal may be a pulsed DC signal, an AC signal, a pulsed DC signal followed by an AC signal, or various other combinations of such signals, and the pulsed DC signal is offset to a fixed quiescent DC level above a zero voltage reference when applied to the patient.

  • Patent number: 4923240
Abstract: An apparatus for securely covering a material receiving structure, for example the cargo box of a pickup truck, is disclosed which includes a flexible cover, a cover positioning portion attachable to the structure adjacent to an open side thereof, and an engaging portion attached to the cover and selectively engagable with the cover positioning portion to thereby secure the cover over the open side. The cover positioning portion includes a body attachable to the structure, a wall extending from the body at a position spaced from the structure and a lip extending from the body at a position between the wall and the structure. The engaging portion includes a retainer and a bridging section, the retainer being positionable between the lip and wall of the cover positioning portion so that the bridging section contacts the wall when the cover is made taut over the open end of the structure thus causing the retainer to contact the lip.

  • Patent number: 4909416
Abstract: A device is disclosed for containing and dispensing flowable materials contained in an inner container which is located within an outer container. The inner container includes a first portion having a nozzle affixed to one end thereof and a readily reshapable bladder affixed to the other end thereof, with the nozzle having a first one-way check valve permitting ejection of the contents from the inner container. The outer container has a second one-way valve to admit air from the exterior of the device to the space between the inner and outer containers and a compressible volume reducing structure for reducing the volume of the outer container without direct contact by a user with the volume reducing structure.
