Patent number: 4704942Abstract: A method of defending against a warfare cloud of toxic aerosol utilizes a charged defensive aerosol which is sprayed into the cloud. The defensive aerosol is made of a defensive agent which may be chemically or biologically active. The agent is sprayed through charged nozzles to impart a charge to the aerosol. The charge should be at least several thousands of volts with respect to ground so that particles of the defensive aerosol combine and coagulate with particles of the toxic aerosol to neutralize and cause rapid settling of the warfare cloud.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 1986Date of Patent: November 10, 1987Inventor: Irving F. Barditch

Patent number: 4699061Abstract: Hardware and method are disclosed for mixing at least two non-toxic chemical compounds in a warhead for missiles and artillery projectiles to form a toxic agent during their ballistic travel to a target. The inventive design avoids danger from spills of toxic agent during shipment, handling or storage of chemical ammunition by not allowing the constituents of such agent to mix until shortly before the ammunition impacts the targets.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 1982Date of Patent: October 13, 1987Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: A. Patent number: H335Abstract: An electrical power converter comprising two current-fed square wave chops the outputs of which are combined and rectified to yield a variable and regulated output voltage. The phase relationship of the choppers are varied to achieve output voltage control and regulation. The chopper outputs are combined in such a way that the choppers never experience the open-circuit inductance of their output transformers. This enhances frequency agility. A novel choke feed system is provided in which the choke flyback energy is absorbed and then transferred to the input of the other chopper.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1987Date of Patent: September 1, 1987Assignee: The United States of America as respresented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventors: Walter E. Patent number: H336Abstract: This invention relates to a method for assessment of the condition, and cge of condition, of the liquid fill for chemical projectiles by analyzing the vibrational characteristics of the projectile and fill. It is a method by which the condition of the liquid fill in a projectile can be assessed without requiring cutting, drilling, and/or altering the structure of the shell or payload. This non-destructive technique can be used with projectiles filled with toxic or hazardous materials and can occur within the confines of storage buildings. The system for incorporating the method of the invention includes a projectile which is freely suspended and then struck with a device causing the projectile and the fill to vibrate. The natural vibrational characteristics of the projectile and fill are measured and recorded and can be compared to model data to ascertain any changes in the physical characteristics of the fill.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 1986Date of Patent: October 6, 1987Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: Miles C. Patent number: H338Abstract: This invention relates to a system for vibration testing of specimens using n electro-dynamic shaker. It overcomes the various undesirable consequences which attend the existing technology and methodology, which uses a constant thickness flat plate platen, by using an inverted, truncated pyramid type of platen, with both the base and top of square-rectangular-parallelpiped shapes, attached to a cylindrical shaker head. The outer portion of the platen has a very low mass and the section modulus is very high at the line of bending thereby increasing the resonant frequency of the platen while lowering the total weight of the platen, because there is less mass around the perimeter of the platen. The optimum shape of the pyramid is determined by a means which can be expedited by use of the computer program.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 1986Date of Patent: October 6, 1987Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: Louie J. Patent number: H339Abstract: A snap slit door having at least one panel and a flat closure means used to reate tension in the door panel or panels, such tension acting as the closure force generated by the closure means for the door panel or panels. The flat closure means may be adjustable such that the tension and resulting resistance to opening is variable. Said door panel or panels may be of any pliable material to enable use of the panel or panels without hinges, and further to render the flat closure means operational. The panel or panels may be held in the closed position by any means which will self-release upon the exertion of a requisite pressure differential between the inside and outside of the panel or panels, effectively relieving the pressure differential. One such effective self-releasing closure means is a hook and pile patch arrangement.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 1986Date of Patent: October 6, 1987Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventors: Robert D. Anderson, John Carta, John D. Estes

Patent number: H342Abstract: A method and apparatus is shown for programming near perfect accuracy for ch shot in a rapid burst machine gun sequence which heretofore was not known to be attainable. Because of vibrations from many sources in the barrel, which are predictable and repeatable, it is impossible for each shot to land directly, except for the first one before vibrations really begin. Each succeeding shot (a different path) has its own signature. In this invention, the barrel is precision bent (flexed) at each instance of the sequence, to compensate for the known vibrations, as each shot travels the barrel, to get a straight shot every time.An adapter is mounted on a gun barrel near its free end. The adapter contains spaced-apart fulcrums with an actuator between the fulcrums for bending or flexing the barrel with respect to the fulcrums. This bends the barrel, causing the muzzle of the barrel to move and thus re-air the barrel independently of a mount which carries the barrel. The adapter can be used in a rapid fire weapon.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 1987Date of Patent: October 6, 1987Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: Eugene Geeter

Patent number: H343Abstract: An improved fiber reinforced penetrator rod for a kinetic energy projectile aving enhanced penetrating strength is disclosed herein. Embedded in a matrix medium of depleted uranium, or liquid phase sintered tungsten, are long fibers of tungsten-hafnium-carbide which are knitted into a continuous weave over the entire length of the fibers. This prevents splaying open or splitting of the front end of the fibers, and hence of the whole penetrator rod front end, upon impact, penetration, and receiving of the compressive forces upon hitting an armor target.Type: GrantFiled: March 2, 1987Date of Patent: October 6, 1987Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventors: William P. Patent number: H357Abstract: These electromagnetic guns or launchers comprise a pair of switching rails ith a slidable switching armature associated therewith for commutating a high direct current into a pair of projectile rails which are arranged in tandem with the switching rails and are electrically connected thereto. The kinetic energy of the switching armature is transferred to the projectile armature assembly so that the projectile armature assembly has an initial velocity as the current is commutated to the projectile rails. The projectile armature assembly may be mounted on and carried by the switching armature during its entire travel or the switching armature may bump the projectile armature assembly into the conductive breech region of the projectile rails at the end of its travel.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 1986Date of Patent: November 3, 1987Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventors: H. Patent number: H374Abstract: A method or technique of resolving multiple energy sources from signals oined by a spatial array of sensors in which portions of two prior art techniques are combined to yield an improved hybrid technique. The method involves sampling and digitizing the output of a sensor array, forming and storing a co-variance matrix from such digitized samples, determining the eigenvectors and corresponding eigenvalues relating to said matrix, performing a directional eigenanalysis on the data of the matrix and determining the minima of the resulting curves, then using a minimum variance method to calculate from said matrix data the total power at each steering direction corresponding to each of said minima, then thresholding the calculated total powers to eliminate false alarms and yield the direction of each power source.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 1987Date of Patent: November 3, 1987Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventors: Anas Abo-Zena, Eugene L.
