Abstract: Processes and compositions are described for the use in tobacco, perfume and perfumed article aroma augmenting, enhancing and imparting compositions and as tobacco, perfume and perfumed article aroma augmenting, enhancing or imparting materials of 2-butyl-3,5,5-trimethyl-2-cyclohexen-1,4-dione having the formula: ##STR1## produced by reacting a ketal of 3,5,5-trimethyl-2-cyclohexen-1,4-dione such as 2,7,9,9-tetramethyl-1,4-dioxaspiro[4,5]dec-6-en-8-one with n-butyltriphenylphosphorane and then deketalizing the resulting product to form the 2-butyl-3,5,5-trimethyl-2-cyclohexen-1,4-dione. Addition of 2-butyl-3,5,5-trimethyl-2-cyclohexen-1,4-dione to consumable materials is indicated to produce:(A) In perfumes, colognes and perfumed articles, deep, slightly woody, herbaceous aromas; and(B) In tobaccos and tobacco flavors, pungent, sweet, hay-, tea-, tobacco-like, floral and fruity notes, both prior to and on smoking in both the main stream and the side stream.

Abstract: Processes and compositions are described for use in foodstuff flavors and as foodstuff article aroma and taste augmenting and enhancing materials of at least one alpha-substituted alkylidene methionals having the structure: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 or R.sub.2 is one of the moieties: ##STR2## AND THE OTHER IS HYDROGEN OR METHYL. Addition of one or more alpha-substituted alkylidene methionals to foodstuff flavorings or to foostuffs is indicated to produce the following aroma and flavor characteristics, in the alternative taken together:AromaPotato; Methional-like; Green; Hydrolyzed vegetable protein-like; Chicken-like; Cabbage; Green potato; Green weedy; Broccoli-like; and Green bean-like.FlavorPotato; Metallic; Sulfury-green; Cabbage-like; Chicken; Mushroom-like; Green-weedy; Broccoli-like; and Green bean-like. The compounds of our invention are useful in augmenting or enhancing the flavor and aroma nuances of vegetable (including potato and cabbage) and chicken flavors.

Abstract: A process is provided comprising forming 3-chloromesityl oxide from mesityl oxide and chlorine and then reacting the 3-chloromesityl oxide with myrcene via a Diels-Alder reaction thereby producing a chlorine containing Diels-Alder adduct and then either:(i) dehydrochlorinating the chlorine containing Diels-Alder adduct to form an acetyl conjugated cyclohexadiene and cyclizing the acetyl conjugated cyclohexadiene to produce a mixture of isomers having the generic formula: ##STR1## wherein one of the dashed lines is a carbon-carbon double bond and each of the other of the dashed lines is a carbon-carbon single bond; or(ii) cyclizing the chlorine containing Diels-Alder adduct to form an acetyl-chloro octahydronaphthalene and dehydrochlorinating the acetyl-chloro octahydronaphthalene to form a composition substantially composed of a compound having the structure: ##STR2## The products produced are useful as vetiver ingredients in perfumes and perfumed articles.
