  • Patent number: 8192333
Abstract: A jump rope simulator for aerobic and anaerobic exercise having a hand-held unit comprising a handle, a base length connected to the handle, and one or more concatenated extension lengths attached to the base length. To exercise, the user grasps one or two units, imitates the motions of swinging a conventional jump rope, and jumps up and down, but there is no risk to the user of tripping over a rope as with a conventional jump rope. If the user desires, two units may also be linked together with an easily attachable connector to form a device similar to a conventional jump rope. A user can quickly convert between the two configurations of the jump rope simulator.

  • Patent number: 8187332
Abstract: A bone fusion device provides stability to bones during a bone fusion period. The bones include, for example, the vertebrae of a spinal column. The bone fusion device comprises one or more extendable tabs attached to the bone fusion device by associated rotating means. The bone fusion device is preferably inserted by using an arthroscopic surgical procedure. During arthroscopic insertion of the device, the tabs are pre-configured for compactness. In this compact configuration, the tabs are preferably deposed along and/or within an exterior surface of the bone fusion device. After the bone fusion device has been positioned between the bones, one or more tab(s) are extended. In the preferred embodiment, the position of each tab is related to a positioning element and extending blocks. Typically, the tabs advantageously position and brace the bone fusion device in the confined space between the bones until the bones have fused.

  • Patent number: 8188754
Abstract: A capacitive sensing system are configured to sense a capacitance value and convert the sensed capacitance value to a digital format. The capacitive sensing system provides good selectivity and immunity to noise and interference, which can be further enhanced by enabling spread spectrum excitation. In some embodiments, the capacitive sensing system utilizes a sinusoidal excitation signal that results in low electromagnetic emissions, limited to narrow frequency band. In some embodiments, the capacitive sensing system is configured to operate in a spread spectrum mode, in which the majority of the excitation signal power is carried in the assigned bandwidth. The excitation frequency and the bandwidth of the spread spectrum excitation signal are programmable in a wide range, which allows for avoiding frequency conflicts in the operating environment.

  • Patent number: 8190797
Abstract: The concentrator couples a plurality of digital and analog sources to an audio/video reader system suitable for reading one of the sources. Each available source is associated with a source identifier and an activated or deactivated state flag, as a result of the user taking action on a source. A register (42) contains an identifier of the current source being read, and a multiple-level LIFO stack (44) stores an ordered list of identifiers of other sources on standby waiting to be read. When a new source is activated, automatic means replace the content of the register with the identifier of the new source so as to substitute the new source for the current source in order to enable it to be read by the system, and concurrently said automatic means add the identifier of the current source to the stack. The inverse operation is performed when the current source is deactivated, with the most recent source contained in the stack being substituted for the current source so as to enable it to be read by the system.

  • Patent number: 8184646
Abstract: A telecommunications system includes a packet radio network comprising a core network and a radio network that communicate internet packets in accordance with a configuration of the core network and the radio network. The mobile node establishes a communications bearer for communicating across the mobile radio network, to generate a packet data connection activation request, including a service level identifier representing a priority of the mobile node and to communicate the packet data connection request to the core network. The core network establishes a communications bearer with the mobile node in accordance with the packet data connection request and to adapts the routing configuration and communications resources following a change of location of the mobile node with a priority determined by the service level identifier. Through inclusion of the service level identifier in the packet data connection request, relative priority is given to mobile nodes requiring higher priority data transmission.

  • Patent number: 8184699
Abstract: A method of improving the computation speed of the sum of absolute transformed distances (SATD) for different intra-prediction modes is described. Determining the SATD quicker provides the benefits of better coding performance without suffering the drawbacks of longer computation times. The method of reducing intra-prediction and mode decision processes in a video encoder, implements Hadamard transforms with improvements. Hadamard transforms are performed on an original block and predicted blocks and calculations are only performed where coefficients are non-zero thus skipping the coefficients that are zero. Using such an approach, the calculations required for the Vertical Prediction, Horizontal Prediction and DC Prediction are reduced significantly. Thus, the best intra-prediction mode is able to be determined very efficiently.

  • Patent number: 8179474
Abstract: A fast iterative motion estimation method enables motion estimation to take place with fewer computations. The motion estimation and error determination steps are combined, each position in the search area is monitored to determine whether error value reaches the minimum over iterations by keeping track of convergence status, a refinement search is applied (thus, a smaller search area than a conventional process), and the difference of the error value and the minimum error value is used for each position in the search area to decide whether to further calculate the error value for that position. Each of these modifications helps minimize the number of computations used in motion estimation.

  • Patent number: 8181111
Abstract: The system and method for providing social context to digital activity combines mobile device contact information with user-provided website information to aid users when browsing the Internet. Users of mobile devices define identifications of themselves for websites, so that when another user in their contact list is browsing the Internet, an indicator is able to indicate that he is a known contact. The determination of whether the person is a known contact based on the identification definitions is able to be implemented either by direct interfacing between the host website and a server which stores the identification definitions, a browser plugin which communicates with the server or an API provided by the server or a mobile device.

  • Patent number: 8175418
Abstract: A method of and system for enhanced storage allows more data to be backed up than would otherwise be possible. Instead of storing uncompressed base images and incremental images, differentials of non-current base images are compressed and stored. Furthermore, incremental images that are older than the current base image are removed. By only saving differential base images that are compressed, aside from the newest base image, and deleting older incremental images, a significant amount of space is saved. A removable drive is used as temporary storage in the process of generating a compressed differential base for previous base images. Additionally, a process ensures that previous base images are differentials of the most recent base image and not each other.

  • Patent number: 8175335
Abstract: Content adaptive detection of images having stand-out objects involves block variance-based detection and determining if an object includes a stand-out object. The images with a stand-out object are further processed to isolate an object of interest. The images without a detected stand-out object are further processed with a transition map-based detection method which includes generating a transition map. If an object portrait is determined from the transition map, then the image is further processed to isolate the object of interest.

  • Patent number: 8170097
Abstract: A codec configured to operate in a sequential mode extends the current AVC standard in order to provide support for coding high resolution still image pictures within the AVC coding of a lower resolution video. The sequential mode codec is configured according to the modified AVC standard. The codec is capable of capturing an AVC video stream while concurrently capturing high resolution still images at random intervals relative to the video stream. Each captured high resolution still image is embedded within the video stream. The video stream including the embedded high resolution still images is encoded as a single layer bit stream. Each embedded high resolution still image signals or forces the start of a new GOP in the coded video sequence. The AVC standard is extended to include new syntax for the sequence parameter sets. In one embodiment, a modified sequence parameter set defines a new profile that signals the presence of a high resolution still image in sequence with AVC video.
