  • Patent number: 4417906
Abstract: A process for producing a sintered silicon carbide composite includes the steps of forming a first dispersion of diamond crystals and carbon black in paraffin, as well as forming a second dispersion of carbon fiber, carbon black and filler in paraffin. The two dispersions are compacted together to form an integral bi-layer composite which is then subjected to a vacuum for a period of time at a temperature sufficient to vaporize essentially all of the paraffin. Silicon is heated to cause liquification and direct infiltration into both layers of the composite after which the composite is sintered under conditions sufficient to produce a .beta.-silicon carbide binder uniting the composite.

  • Patent number: 4414054
Abstract: The machine is intended for the printing of selected characters on self-adhesive labels (5) forming a continuous series borne by a support strip (8).The inner circuit of this strip passes via a loop defined by an edge (11) at the level of which each label (5), after printing, is advanced by a step corresponding to its length, is separated from the support strip, and is directed below a pressure roller (12) in order to be glued by pressure onto an article to be labeled. In order to prevent the falling of the printed label before its gluing and in order to present it flat below the pressure roller (12) there are provided a cambering device which comprises two guides (20, 21) between which the label is stiffened by cambering in the direction of its displacement and the pressure roller itself, under which the edges of the label which have been raised by the cambering are brought downward.

  • Patent number: 4413142
Abstract: L-carnitine is prepared by a synthesizing process starting from D-mannitol. The synthesis is started with the formation of a D-mannitol ketonide (more specifically D-mannitol acetonide from D-mannitol and acetone, whereafter the D-mannitol is split by oxidation to give glyceraldehyde acetonide, which is further reduced to glycerol acetonide. Then the free hydroxyl group is exchanged with a halogen atom (chlorine) with the formation of chlorodihydroxy propane, the primary alcoholic group of which is functionalized with the acid chloride of a sulfonic acid (tosylchloride). The reaction of the tosyl derivative with the salt of hydrogen cyanide leads to the formation of the corresponding nitrile which, when reacted with trimethylamine gives carnitinonitrile. The nitrile group is now hydrolyzed to give L-carnitine chloride. The formation of L-carnitine can then be obtained by exchanging the chloride ion with a hydroxyl ion.

  • Patent number: 4411565
Abstract: A finishing insert for use with an indexable cutting tool is formed from a flat wafer of cutting material which is generally polygonal in plan form and includes a pair of opposed faces and a plurality of upstanding side walls extending therebetween. The juncture of the side walls with each face defines the cutting edges of the insert. The polygonal insert includes a plurality of radiused corner portions and is provided with at least one non-planar insert face wherein the corner portions thereof slope inwardly towards the opposed face of the insert. Each corner portion further includes a pair of generally triangular chip grooves separated by a planar central triangular land area. Each chip groove is spaced from the peripheral cutting edge of the insert to define a side land area which increases in width from the corner portion to its opposed end. In addition each chip groove increases in both width and depth from the corner portion to its opposed end.

  • Patent number: 4411293
Abstract: In a textile loom, the invention comprises a device for varying the speed and the tension of unreeling the warp threads from the warp beam. The device essentially includes a set of interchangeable spur gears connected to the warp beam which cooperate with a system of variable-race sheaves so that when a sheave has its race becoming narrower, the other sheave has its race widened and vice versa. Proper linkages are also provided to ensure that there is always a constant balance between the tension of the warp threads and the speed of rotation of the warp beam. Consequently, as the diameter of warp threads on the beam is decreased and the speed of the warp threads is concurrently decreased, the device imparts a pull increase to the warp threads so that the unreeling speed of the threads from the warp beam is automatically brought back to a preselected constant value.
