  • Patent number: 6471146
Abstract: In FIG. 1, turbulent water or other fluid enters the nozzle body, 2, at inlet port, 1, and encounters the convex surface of a porous filter which has been formed into the shape of a hollow hemisphere, 3, at the center of which is the exit orifice. As the fluid flows through the hollow hemispherical diffuser it has its Reynold's Number significantly reduced. The energy of any gross turbulences on the convex side of the diffuser tends to be converted to a very great number of micro-turbulences which tend to be self canceling. Since the diffuser, 3, also shown in FIG. 3, is shaped as a hollow hemisphere centered upon the exit orifice, 4, then all water flowing from the diffuser to the exit orifice has substantially the same distance to travel from all directions. With this low-turbulence fluid all having substantially the same straight-line distance to travel to the exit orifice, 4, there tends to be little new turbulence introduced and the fluid, 5, exiting the orifice, 4, tends to be highly laminar.

  • Patent number: 6452188
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for measuring the reflectance in a visible spectral wavelength band by visual comparison of a surface viewed through a filter with a set of reference reflectance areas are described. An appropriate filter and reference reflecting areas are useful for estimating skin pigmentation, corresponding skin sun sensivity and sun exposure time tolerance. Tables are included for the solar erythemal radiation environment in different locations for different times of the year for use in determining sunlight exposure time tolerance. Also methods to use skin reflectance data along with local solar ultraviolet index data to determine sunlight exposure tolerance times are included. In addition, methods to ensure sufficient exposure for previtamin D generation are included along with techniques to reduce the risk of skin cancer.

  • Patent number: 6450224
Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, the traction device 10 includes mounting plate assembly 30, and cleats 40. Mounting assembly 30 comprises plate 31 and center ring 35. Plate 31 and center ring 35 are made of steel aluminum alloy or other heavy-duty material capable of withstanding the stresses to be encountered during the application of the invention. Tabs 32 are part of plate 30. As an example they may be formed by bending and folding material up 90 degrees from the plate surface during the manufacturing process. Center ring 35 fits down over and is welded to tabs 32 such that after assembly, holes 37 in center ring 35 will match holes 38 in tabs 32. Each cleat 40 is a single piece of steel or another heavy-duty material capable of withstanding the stresses expected to be encountered during the application of the invention. Cleats 40 are manufactured such that a portion of each cleat 40 is bent and folded to form a gripping element 41.

  • Patent number: 6436125
Abstract: A pacifier is provided having two teat sucking portions integrally connected to a middle support member. Each of the teat sucking portion includes a shank portion and a nipple portion adapted to be sucked by the child. The support member may become either convex or concave depending upon the side of the pacifier in which suction is applied. The middle support member must have sufficient flexibility to allow this movement between neutral, convex and concave positions. The pacifier is made of elastomeric material such as natural or synthetic rubber. Preferably, air holes are provided in the center support section. These holes are preferably aligned horizontally and are aligned to the baby's mouth to facilitate airflow passage. The air holes also create more flexibility in the middle support member to allow movement between neutral, convex and concave positions.
