  • Patent number: 8111640
Abstract: The present invention provides a wireless device for effecting two way wireless transmission, an antenna feed network, and a patch antenna. The wireless device includes an antenna assembly having two inputs accepting two feed signals shifted a feed signal phase difference apart. The antenna assembly receives a radiated signal and produces first and second received signals. First and second reflected feed signals are also produced at the two antenna inputs. A transmitter produces a transmission signal and a receiver receives the radiated signal while the transmission signal is transmitted by the antenna assembly. The antenna feed network interconnects the transmitter port, the receiver port, and the antenna assembly and produces the received signal while effecting substantial cancellation of the first and second reflected feed signals. Additionally, or alternatively, first and second transmission leakage signals at the received signal output substantially cancel each other.

  • Patent number: 8024525
Abstract: A “Logging” method and apparatus is provided to protect control unit cached data not yet written to backing storage disk drives. This recording mechanism copies “WRITE DATA” to a log at a target logically external or physically external to storage control units which are connected to a common storage pool and constitute a set. Upon failure of one of the set of control units, the “Log” information is available to insure that pending “write” data is written to the proper location on the disk drives of the storage pool upon a recovery action. One of surviving members of the set assumes control of the storage managed by the failing control unit by utilizing the recorded information to insure that data not written to backing storage (disks) up to the point of failure is then written to the disk backing storage.

  • Patent number: 7930499
Abstract: A device and method for connection to a host and transferring data between the host and data storage assembly. The device is preferably a storage system which initializes a logical unit (LUN) in the storage assembly. A persistent memory stores a data representation of clean areas in the LUN. The storage system receives data to be written from the host to a destination area in the LUN, and determines if the destination area in the LUN is a clean area or a dirty area as indicated in the persistent memory. The storage system effects a snapshot copy of data from the destination area in the LUN to an archive storage device of the storage assembly only if the destination area is not entirely a clean area. Bandwidth is likewise reduced in LUN copy and reconstruction operations.

  • Patent number: 5810755
Abstract: A wound dressing, suitable for use in protecting an open wound or burned tissue from direct exposure to air and capable of maintaining an aqueous environment of wounded tissue with which it is in brought into contact is comprised of a hydrophilic, yet insoluble material, advantageously a polymeric compound capable of being reversibly complexed with elemental iodine, thereby permitting release of therapeutic amounts of free iodine into a wound with which it is brought in contact. As a shaped mass of pliable and absorbent material, such a polymeric foam, such dressing is particularly suited for application to fresh and infected burns and open wounds. When alternatively configured as a hydrophilic film complexed with free iodine for use as a surgical drape, in addition to providing a barrier against direct exposure to air, such dressing is bacteriocidal, preventing infection of the wound from airborne contaminants in the operating room.

  • Patent number: 5573547
Abstract: A method of fixation for use within animal and human bodies provides for the insertion of brushes, of cylindrical and conical designs, into openings wherein bristles of the brushes are deflected by walls of the openings such that the brushes are locked in place and resist forces applied thereto. An embodiment of the invention includes boring a hole into a cancellous bone structure and inserting a brush into the hole. The hole is of a smaller diameter than the brush and is locked in the hole by the bristles. Tissue, such as tendon, may then be attached to material affixed to an end of the brush. Another embodiment of the method includes insertion of a brush into a blood vessel such that the blood flow is either occluded or strained by the bristles of the brush.

  • Patent number: 5491438
Abstract: A synchronized clock generating apparatus includes a delayed clock generating circuit including a plurality of serially connected delaying elements for generating delayed clock signals delayed successively relative to an incoming basic clock signal. Storage means includes a plurality of storage elements storing therein a predetermined level in response to transitions occurring in associated ones of said basic and delayed clock signals after a trigger signal which is asynchronous with the basic clock signal is applied thereto. A clock selection logic circuit is controlled by the output signal of the storage means for detecting the clock signal transition occurring closest in time to the application of the asynchronous trigger signal, and for selecting a desired one of said clock signals, based on the result of the detection, as a synchronized clock signal output.

  • Patent number: 5428302
Abstract: A semiconductor logic circuit apparatus includes a plurality of logic circuits each including complementary field effect transistors, and a plurality bipolar transistors associated with the respective ones of the logic circuits. When any one of the outputs of the logic circuits becomes high, an associated bipolar transistor becomes conductive to cause an output terminal of the apparatus to be charged from a voltage supply. With all the outputs of the logic circuits being low, all of the bipolar transistors are non-conductive, and a current supply coupled between the output terminal and ground dicharges charge on the output terminal.

  • Patent number: 5408457
Abstract: A device detects seismic motion by linear motion of a seismic detection ball within an inner casing. Radial protrusions on the inside surface of a bottom wall of the inner casing maintain linear back-and-forth motion of the seismic detection ball while in contact with the casing bottom wall. On the inside surface of the perimeter wall of the inner casing, radially inward protrusions are formed parallel to one another to prevent rotation of the seismic detection ball in a circular path along the casing perimeter when it is lifted up from the casing bottom wall. The seismic detection ball is formed from a material unaffected by magnetic fields. The inner casing is suspended within an outer casing, in a condition of damped swaying. The inner casing is composed at least partially of a metallic material to provide sufficient weight to insure reliable automatic centering.

  • Patent number: 5388449
Abstract: An osmolarity sensor continuously senses an osmolarity of a fluid. A principle of operation is based on achieving an equilibrium of a vapor pressure of a specimen solution with a vapor pressure of a standard solution. In an embodiment, the standard solution is contained in a cavity defined by a vapor-permeable membrane which is immersed in a specimen solution. The standard solution and the specimen solution are allowed to come into equilibrium by a movement of water vapor across the vapor-permeable membrane, which is permeable only to water vapor and not to any solutes or water itself. The movement of the water vapor between the standard solution and the specimen is measured by sensing a volume of water transferred between the standard solution and the specimen solution. A measurement of a volume change of the standard solution is made by sensing a change a conductivity of the standard solution.

  • Patent number: 5334892
Abstract: A positioning device has a shuttle slidably and rotatably supported above a base assembly. A first linear motor moves the shuttle linearly in a first direction while the second and third linear motors move the shuttle linearly in a second direction, normal to the first direction. The second and third linear motors are separated along an axis in the first direction. The linear motors have magnetic arrays including rows of magnets or a checkerboard array of magnets and provide continuously variable positioning. Rotary movement of the shuttle is achieved by operating the second and third linear motors in opposing directions or at differing rates. The positions of three points on the shuttle are determined by three optical encoders, or three interferometers, whose signals provide feedback to a controller which actuates the linear motors accordingly.
