Abstract: Low resistivity titanium silicide, and semiconductor devices incorporating the same, may be formed by titanium alloy comprising titanium and 1-20 atomic percent refractory metal deposited in a layer overlying a silicon substrate, the substrate is then heated to a temperature sufficient to substantially form C54 phase titanium silicide. The titanium alloy may further comprise silicon and the refractory metal may be Mo, W, Ta, Nb, V, or Cr, and more preferably is Ta or Nb. The heating step used to form the low resistivity titanium silicide is performed at a temperature less than 900° C., and more preferably between about 600-700° C.

Abstract: A system and method for progressively identifying and configuring the nodes of a network having an unknown or partially unknown topology are presented. A special all-node address indicator is designated for insertion in a packet to be sent from a given node with known node address to a next adjacent node with unknown node address. Each node contains a port control register for each port of the node which when set instructs the node to insert the all-node address indicator into a packet to be forwarded to a next adjacent node in the network with unknown node address. The port control registers are remotely selectively set by one or more managing nodes of the network. Race condition is avoided by provision of a set count register associated with an address node register and managing node address register within each node of the network.

Abstract: Hydrotherapy-tub multiple slot flow device includes slotted outlets on a body for discharge of fluids from a nozzle in a substantially coplanar flow and in a selected direction. The body is adapted for mounting on an inner surface of a hydrotherapy tub and attachable to first and second fluid supply conduits. Further, the body has a first inlet for flow of a fluid from the first fluid supply conduit and a second inlet for flow of a fluid from the second fluid supply conduit.
Abstract: A lock structure, which includes many entries, is partitioned into segments. A number of the segments are cleaned up in parallel, such that cleanup processing of the entire lock structure is optimized. The lock structure is maintained within a coupling facility, which provides access to the lock structure by one or more processors coupled to the coupling facility. The cleaning up of the lock structure is performed by commands driven by the one or more processors and executed within the coupling facility.

Abstract: A polymer-based electrolyte composition having excellent film-forming properties, flexibility, mechanical strength and high hydroxide conductivity is disclosed. The composition comprises an organic polymer having an alkyl quaternary ammonium salt structure; a nitrogen-containing, heterocyclic quaternary ammonium salt; and a metal hydroxide salt. In a preferred embodiment, the composition is cast in the form of a film that is suitable for use as an ion-conducting or other specialty membrane in a power source, such as for example an alkaline battery or fuel cell, that relies on hydroxide anion transport for its operation.

Abstract: Apparatus for use in lifting a vehicle from a substantially flat surface. The apparatus includes a pair of levers, each having a first lever and a second lever pivotally joined together cris-crossing one another and operable in a scissor-like motion between a collapsed position and a lifted position. A lifting platform is operatively coupled to the levers for supporting a vehicle thereon. A lifting mechanism is operably coupled to the levers for operating them between the collapsed position and the lifted position and thereby raising and lowering the lifting platform. An extendable, one-way incrementally lockable safety strut is pivotally connected to the first lever at a point along its upper portion and the other end of the safety strut is pivotally connected to the second lever at a point along its lower portion.

Abstract: A method of decoding a multiplexed, system layer bitstream. The bitstream is made up of packets of audio, video, and system data. Each packet has a packet header, and data packets. The first step in the process is demultiplexing the bitstream into separate audio and video bitstreams for decompression while maintaining synchronization of the video and audio. The system data and the audio and video packets are next loaded into buffers, from which they are unloaded for subsequent decoding. The decoding is in accordance with the system data entries. The method is characterized by storing the system data and the audio and video packets in a single buffer.

Abstract: A process for preparing an alkyl phenylglycolic acid is disclosed. It follows the sequence of condensing a substituted acetaldehyde with mandelic acid to provide a 5-phenyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-one, which is condensed with an alkyl ketone or aldehyde to provide a 5-(1-hydroxyalkyl)-5-phenyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-one, which is dehydrated to a 5-(1-alkenyl)-5-phenyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-one. The 5-(1-alkenyl)-5-phenyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-one may be hydrolyzed and reduced to an &agr;-alkylphenylglycolic acid or the hydrolysis and reduction steps may be reversed. The process enables the production of single enantiomers of cyclohexylphenylglycolic acid (CHPGA). An analogous process for racemic CHPGA is disclosed employing racemic mandelic acid and acetone. Novel intermediates in the process are also disclosed.
Abstract: A method and system for reducing positioning noise in a data storage system are provided. An access device is positioned over a data storage medium using a stream of bursts stored on the medium. The bursts are sensed at a frequency determined by the rate at which the medium is moved relative to a sensing device. Output positioning values are provided to position the access device at a frequency higher than the frequency at which the positioning bursts are sensed, and/or at random times. The random times may be calculated as random advances or delays from time points occurring at a fixed frequency.

Abstract: A default-immobile ladder (10) includes mobility means (12) displaceable between a ladder immobile position and a ladder mobile position in which the mobility means extends downwardly beyond the foot of the ladder and manually actuable means (32) for displacing the mobility means from the ladder immobile position to the ladder mobile position. When the manually actuable means is released, the mobility means returns to the ladder immobile position.
Abstract: A method for removing tumor cells from tumor cell-contaminated stem cell products is disclosed. One embodiment of the method relies on an in-line filtration device that includes a tumor cell reduction filter means, preferably comprised of one or more tumor cell reduction filter pads. The tumor cell reduction filter means provides at least a ten-fold reduction in tumor cells while allowing for at least a 30% recovery of stem cells in a filtered stem cell product.
