  • Patent number: 7327354
Abstract: A method of determining a type of touch plane operator input device comprises sensing the impedance across first and second terminals of a touch plane operator input device to distinguish the touch plane operator input device as being one of at least two different types of touch plane operator input devices. A method of processing an input from a touch plane operator input device comprises determining a first location of a first touch on the touch plane operator input device; determining a second location of a second touch on the touch plane operator input device; comparing the first and second locations to obtain an indication of an amount of difference between the first and second locations; and determining whether the indication of the amount of difference exceeds a predetermined amount. These steps are performed by discrete logic circuitry that provides an event notification to a microprocessor when the indication of the amount of difference exceeds the predetermined amount.

  • Patent number: 7266425
Abstract: The subject invention relates to systems and methods that facilitate motion between different coordinate systems in an industrial control environment. The systems and methods accept data in one coordinate system and transform the data to a different coordinate system. Suitable transformations include instructions that transform between Cartesian, pre-defined non-Cartesian, and user-defined non-Cartesian coordinate systems, including transformations between a non-Cartesian coordinate system to another non-Cartesian coordinate system. Such transformations can be programmed in essentially any industrial control language and can be seamlessly integrated with the control environment. The systems and methods can be utilized to generate a motion instruction that includes, among other information, source and target coordinate systems and the transformation between them.

  • Patent number: 6556153
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for improving resolution of an encoder or other position sensing device that provides one or more signals indicative of relative movement between two bodies. The signals are employed to determine an operating mode, which varies as a function of relative speed between the two bodies. In one operating mode, the system determines an indication of position by interpolating between position information of a table. Position also can be predicted in this operating mode, which can be used to update the position information. The table is populated with position information based on a sample of the signals from the position sensing device, such as to provide the position information for the table. In another operating mode, an indication of position is determined as a function of velocity and time.

  • Patent number: 6532154
Abstract: A stack assembly comprising a housing into which an alternating sequence of elements such as heat sinks and printed circuit boards (PCBs) carrying press-packaged semiconductor devices may be mounted and placed under pressure by a clamping device for use in a variety of power system applications. The PCBs are mounted to the heat sinks by a bracket which axially aligns the press-packaged devices with a longitudinal axis defined by the clamping device. Heat sink compartments in the housing are sized slightly larger than the heat sinks to allow the heat sinks some horizontal play within the compartment when the clamping device is loosened. This is further achieved by using floating anchors to connect the heat sinks to the housing and a flexible connector to connect the heat sinks to a power source. The heat sinks may thus be easily shifted to remove a malfunctioning PCB whilst the bulk of the stack remains in the assembled state, thereby facilitating the rapid re-assembly of the stack.

  • Patent number: 6520464
Abstract: A mounting arrangement facilitates mounting and removal of an article, such as an elongated housing for a proximity sensor. A bracket and a coupling each have an aperture extending therethrough for receiving the article. A central axis extends through the apertures. The coupling includes a plurality of spaced apart flexures located adjacent the coupling aperture. Each flexure includes an axially extending arm portion for engaging a respective part of an inner sidewall portion of the bracket aperture. Upon rotation of the coupling about the central axis, the bracket sidewall portion engages or releases the arms of the coupling to effect radial movement of the arms. In particular, rotation of the coupling in one direction about the central axis relative to the bracket urges the arms radially inward and rotation of the coupling in the other direction permits a radially outward movement thereof.

  • Patent number: 6483319
Abstract: A broadband test procedure detects the onset of stator winding insulation damage, identifies the failure mechanism, determines the winding's susceptibility to further damage, and predicts stator winding failure. This is accomplished by realizing that changes in the stator winding insulation and/or geometry are reflected as changes in the capacitance between the individual windings and, hence, as changes in the stator winding's broadband impedance response. In the currently preferred approach, the impedance response includes the frequency, magnitude, width, and phase of the resonant impedance.

  • Patent number: 6459173
Abstract: A system and method is provided for selecting a test load and/or bias resistor utilized in an expandable load system employing a backup power source. The test load and/or bias resistor is selected based on the actual load present in the expandable system. The backup power source is periodically tested during normal operation of the expandable load system utilizing the test load. A test load is provided that is sized for the actual load of a local load under worse case conditions. If an expansion load is connected to the local load the test load is adjusted, so that the test load is based on the actual load of the local load and the expansion load. Additionally, a bias resistance can be provided for driving a switch that allows power to be provided to the local load during power loss mode. If an expansion load is connected to the local load, the bias resistance is adjusted to correspond to a bias resistance necessary to provide the current for the actual load of the local load and the expansion load.

  • Patent number: 6455957
Abstract: An encoder includes a plurality of magnetic zones of alternating polarity. At the opposed ends of the encoder magnet are magnetic end zones that provide substantially symmetric magnetic fields. The encoder sensors include first and second sensors that are spaced apart from each other a distance functionally related to the distance between the magnetic end zones. A plurality of first and second sensors are arranged so that the encoder magnet may move relative to the sensors. Each of the first and second sensors provides an associated output signal in response to magnetic influence of the encoder magnet moving past each respective encoder sensor. When each of the first and second encoder sensors senses one of the magnetic end zones of the encoder magnet, the associated output signals are substantially symmetric.

  • Patent number: 6446666
Abstract: A valve lock for locking a valve spindle in a selected position corresponding to the valve being for example fully open or fully closed. The lock has a housing which is mounted on the valve body and a hub which engages and rotates with the valve spindle relative to the housing. A latch is provided between the housing and the hub, the latch being actuatable by a key to assume a latched condition in which rotation of the hub relative to the housing is permitted in one direction but prevented in the other direction. A spindle position indicator is coupled by a transmission to the hub as to be displaced as a result of rotation of the spindle, thereby to indicate the spindle position relative to the valve body. The spindle position indicator prevents actuation of the latch by the key except when the spindle is in the selected position as represented by the spindle position indicator.
