  • Patent number: 5910132
Abstract: A safety IV catheter includes an end cap or guard and a disc-shaped lock plate having an opening through which the needle passes. One end of an actuator member passes through a second off-center opening in the lock plate and its other end passes through a flange fitted about the needle hub. In the prepared or ready position of the catheter, the guard is mounted about the distal end of the needle hub. As the needle is retracted to the activated position, the needle tip is received within the needle guard and the lost motion of the actuator member is taken up by the engagement of the needle hub and the lower end of the actuator member. This, in turn, causes the lock plate to be canted or rocked at an angle about the distal end of the needle to grip and lock the needle tip within the needle guard and to prevent further axial movement of the needle.

  • Patent number: 5898513
Abstract: A circuit and method for detecting an edge of the carrier frequency of received data from a remote IR communications device by an Infrared Communications Controller is disclosed. During the receiving of IR signals from a remote IR communications device such as, for example, a TV, VCR or stereo, a frequency window of frequencies above and below a predetermined carrier frequency is opened. If the edge of the carrier frequency of the received data falls within the frequency window, communications are established between the IrCC and the remote IR communications device. If the negative edge of the carrier frequency of the received data does not fall in the frequency window of frequencies, then the system aborts communications. Provisions are made for a ten percent (10%), a twenty percent (20%) frequency window, and a forty percent (40%) frequency window. Other configurations combining various percentage frequency windows are also disclosed as well as methods for generating the frequency windows.

  • Patent number: 5890141
Abstract: A system and method for detecting and thus preventing check fraud utilizing a digital computer with image capture and interpretation systems. The system converts the payee information, issue date and the MICR line information (account number, check number and dollar amount) to a check digit which is then placed into the MICR line of a check, printed on its face or transmitted via the paid issuance file to the drawee bank. The drawee bank, upon presentment utilizes a transformation algorithm to convert the printed payee information and issue date on the check into a numerical value that is combined with MICR line information and a check digit is calculated based upon pre-agreed logic. This unique data processing system quickly confirms properly presented checks while effectively precludes payee and other alterations in a cost effective manner.

  • Patent number: 5886337
Abstract: The invention is a method and apparatus for automatically reading bar code symbols. One aspect of the present invention concerns a method of reading bar code symbols using an automatic hand-holdable bar code symbol reading device. In general, the automatic bar code symbol reading device comprises a hand-holdable housing containing operative elements which provide an object detection field and a scan field each defined external to the housing. The method involves automatically detecting the presence of an object within the object detection field by sensing object sensing energy reflected off the object. In a preferred embodiment, the object sensing energy is IR radiation produced from an object sensing energy source disposed within the housing. In automatic response to the detection of the object within the object detection field, the hand-holdable device detects the presence of a bar code within the scan field using a laser beam produced within the housing.

  • Patent number: 5844229
Abstract: A portable bar code symbol reading system for desktop use includes a hand-graspable housing that has a viewing aperture and a light-transmission aperture through which light can exit and enter the housing. A bar code symbol reader is included in the housing as is a laser and a scanner to scan the visible beam produced by the laser across a scan field and the bar code symbol. The laser light deflected off the bar code symbol produces scan data indicative of the detected light intensity. That scan data is processed in the housing to detect the bar code symbol and to automatically generate an activation signal. A programmed microprocessor also contained in the housing processes the scan data in response to the activation signal to decode the detected bar code symbol and to produce symbol character data representative of the decoded bar code symbol.
