  • Patent number: 5428657
Abstract: The invention is a method and apparatus for identifying and pinpointing the location of unwanted pieces of material or defects in, for example, de-boned poultry pieces. The poultry pieces to be inspected are carried on a conveyor and passed under an impinging collimated X-ray beam. The Rayleigh scattering resulting is detected and measured, as is the Compton back scattering and the data is processed in a processing unit to determine the location and type of foreign matter involved. The ratio of the Rayleigh and Compton scattering is also determined and used to verify the identity of the foreign material. Transmitted X-rays, i.e., radioscopy, are used to normalize the data, and to aid in a pinpointing of the location of the unwanted material.

  • Patent number: 5421249
Abstract: A food wedger for slicing food such as apples into wedge shaped segments and coring the food comprises a frame having a base that supports a cutter assembly. The cutter assembly comprises a plurality of cutter blades radiating outwardly and upwardly from a central ring in an inverted cone-shaped radial array. The blades are fixed to the central ring and, are fixed at the periphery of the assembly to a peripheral support ring. A tapered segmented pusher having radial slots and a central pin is mounted for selective advancement through the cutter assembly. When so advanced, the blades of the assembly pass through the slots and the central pin of the pusher passes through the central ring of the cutter assembly. Food to be wedged is placed in the cutter assembly and the pusher is advanced through the cutter to force the food past the blades, which cuts the periphery of the food into wedge-shaped segments. The core of the food is, at the same time, cut away by the central ring.

  • Patent number: 5418019
Abstract: A sequential plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) of SiN and SiO.sub.x produces a very effective double-layer antireflection coating. This antireflection coating is compared with the frequently used and highly efficient double-layer MgF.sub.2 /ZnS coating. It is shown that the double-layer SiO.sub.x /SiN coating improves the short-circuited current (J.sub.sc) by 47%, open-circuit voltage (V.sub.oc) by 3.7%, and efficiency (Eff) by 55% for silicon cells with oxide surface passivation. The counterpart MgF.sub.2 /ZnS coating gives smaller improvement in V.sub.oc and Eff. However, if silicon cells do not have the oxide passivation, the PECVD SiO.sub.x /SiN gives much greater improvement in the cell parameters, 57% in J.sub.sc, 8% in V.sub.oc, and 66% in efficiency, compared to the MgF.sub.2 /ZnS coating which improves J.sub.sc by 50%, V.sub.oc by 2%, and cell efficiency by 54%. This significant additional improvement results from the PECVD deposition-induced surface/defect passivation.

  • Patent number: 5416392
Abstract: A spherical motor (10) provides smooth isotropic motion. The spherical motor (10) has a spherical stator (12) surrounding a spherical rotor (18) . A motor shaft (24) is mounted to the rotor (18), or alternatively, to the stator (12) for performing work in isotropic motion. A grid pattern is situated to move substantially concentrically with the rotor (18) and in conjunction with the motor shaft (24). A vision system (80) monitors the grid pattern (42) and determines in real time the position of the motor shaft (24). The vision system (80) has at least one image sensor (44) positioned on the stator (12) and a computer system (82) for processing data independent of a remote host computer (122). Further, a motor controller (191) using a motor control algorithm (200) my be interfaced with the vision system (80) to thereby derive a motor control system (190) for controlling the spherical motor (10) based upon the rotor orientation information retrieved by the vision system (80).
