Patent number: 8320597Abstract: An accessory for a portable electronic device having a speaker uses an acoustic wave guide to passively amplify and direct the output of the device's speaker. The accessory has a housing with a docking cavity formed therein. The docking cavity has supportive sidewalls that are adapted to receive and support the portable electronic device in an upright position. A cable access channel is formed in the docking cavity that allows a connector and cable to be coupled to the portable electronic device when the portable electronic device is mounted in the docking cavity. An acoustic waveguide having a spiral shaped acoustic chamber is positioned in the housing such that an entrance to the acoustic waveguide corresponds to a hole in the docking cavity that is positioned to correspond to the location of the speaker of the device when the device is mounted in the docking chamber. The exit of the acoustic chamber corresponds to an exterior opening in a sidewall of the housing and the hole in the docking cavity.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 2009Date of Patent: November 27, 2012Assignee: Griffin Technology, Inc.Inventors: Paul P. Patent number: 8306476Abstract: A transmitting accessory couples with a portable electronic device such that audio signals or data from the device can be digitally transmitted to a remote receiver. The accessory includes an input port for receiving audio data from the portable electronic device. A digital transmitter transmits digital data corresponding to the audio signals or data from the portable electronic device to the remote digital receiver. If the audio signal is an analog signal, the accessory uses encoding circuitry to digitally encode the analog audio signal for transmission. The audio signal may be encoded into an HD radio format for reception by an HD radio receiver. The user inputs of the portable electronic device can preferably be used to control functions of the accessory and the device's display to display the selected transmission frequency or channel.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 2007Date of Patent: November 6, 2012Assignee: Griffin Technology, Inc.Inventors: Paul P. Patent number: 8297089Abstract: A theft deterrent enclosure that eliminates unauthorized access is disclosed. The enclosure includes a door assembly having three sides and a wrapper assembly having three sides that mate to form a lockable enclosure. A key lock cylinder is mounted in a lock opening of the door assembly such that it blocks the lock opening in a locked position. A keyed interface operates a fastener, such as a compression latch, threaded coupling or lock plate, which is mounted on the door assembly such that the fastener secures the door assembly and the wrapper assembly in a closed position. The keyed interface is positioned on an interior side of the enclosure that is opposite and aligned with the lock opening. A guide sleeve is positioned inside the enclosure that guides a security keyed tool inserted through the lock opening toward the keyed interface.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 2010Date of Patent: October 30, 2012Inventor: Johnny Edward Walker

Patent number: 7970342Abstract: An accessory for a digital music player establishes bidirectional communications between the digital music player and a remote receiver. The bidirectional communication channel allows song information such as the title, artist and album to be transferred from the digital music player to the remote receiver. This information is then displayed by the remote receiver. The accessory also transmits an FM audio signal to the receiver based upon an audio signal received from the digital music player such that music from the player can be played over the remote receiver. The bidirectional communication channel allows the controls of the remote receiver's controls to be used to control the music being played by the digital music player. The commands and digital information are preferably transferred between the digital music player and the remote receiver in accordance with a Radio Data System or Radio Broadcast Data System format.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 2006Date of Patent: June 28, 2011Assignee: Griffin Technology Inc.Inventor: Paul Griffin

Patent number: 7808226Abstract: A method, device, and apparatus for tracing a conductive line and locating any concealed surveillance devices coupled to the line uses a signal generator to produce a test signal having a fundamental frequency which is coupled to the line under test. The test signal flowing through the line under test creates electromagnetic waves that propagate through the atmosphere away from the line. A portable locator probe is used to detect the radiated signal and thus the conductive line by detecting the magnitude of the radiated signal. As the locator probe is moved closer to the line, the amplitude of the detected signal increases. In addition, the portable locator probe detects harmonic signals radiated from nonlinear junctions coupled to the line at harmonic frequencies of the fundamental test signal.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 2005Date of Patent: October 5, 2010Assignee: Research Electronics InternationalInventors: Bruce R. Patent number: 7743999Abstract: A case for portable electronic device has a set of substantially rigid opposing faces mounted on a hinge that fold together to enclose the device. An internal electrical connection between the device and the case is used to provide an electrical access point on the exterior of the case. The external electrical connection is accomplished through a passive electrical connector positioned on the hinge that holds the opposing faces together. Additional active electronics and batteries may also be positioned in the hinge such that the case can be operationally linked with the device contained in the case. Since many portable electronic devices are dimensioned to be carried in pockets or purses, limiting the size of a protective carrying case can be crucial to gaining consumer acceptance. The case is particularly well adapted for use with a digital music player.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 2006Date of Patent: June 29, 2010Assignee: Griffin Technology, Inc.Inventor: Paul Griffin

Patent number: 7697627Abstract: A rotary encoder is used to select a transmission frequency for an FM transmitter associated with a portable electronic device such as a cellular telephone, MP3 player or other portable type electronic device. The rotary encoder is turned in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction to raise or lower the transmission frequency of the FM transmitter. Movement of the rotary encoder is translated into a frequency change on a linear, circular or exponential basis by a microprocessor. The transmission frequency of the FM transmitter is then altered to the selected frequency and the selected frequency is displayed on an LCD screen of the portable electronic device. The rotary encoder may also be used in connection with an accessory for a portable electronic device.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 2006Date of Patent: April 13, 2010Assignee: Griffin Technology, Inc.Inventor: Paul Griffin
