  • Patent number: 6405672
Abstract: In a system and a method for monitoring the physical condition of a herd of livestock, errors between values predicted in accordance with a time-series model and corresponding measured values are used for determining a confidence interval for a prediction for each animal individually the significance of an error between a prediction and a measured value regarding the likelihood that the animal is in heat or suffers from a disease is automatically assessed for each animal individually. There is no need to determine dedicated confidence intervals for different situations and properties. A better fit of the time-series model automatically results in a narrowed confidence interval.

  • Patent number: 6380276
Abstract: Polymer-metal ion composites and methods are provided for reversibly binding target compounds using such composites. Broadly, the composites comprise an amorphous polymer matrix having a plurality of channels with metal ion-ligand complexes immobilized therein. The composites are formed by polymerizing a polymeric moiety with a metal complex template in the presence of a solvent. The template is formed of a metal ion having a ligand bonded thereto as well as to polymer matrix. The metal ion and ligand are selected to yield a composite having a particular chemical and/or physical environment around the metal sites, depending upon the desired end use. Preferred metal ions include ions of the transition metals. The composites can be contacted with target compounds for reversibly binding the compounds. Exemplary compounds include those selected from the group consisting of oxygen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, compounds having an atom of P, S, or N, and mixtures thereof.

  • Patent number: 6349890
Abstract: The material processing mill includes a pair of rolls that each preferably have a smooth outer surface, such that material particles passing through the nip defined between the rolls are formed into flakes. One of the rolls is shiftable relative to the other, and shifting of the one roll is controlled by a roll positioning mechanism that includes a pair of piston and cylinder assemblies and associated spring reliefs. The rolls are each powered by a separate drive, which preferably includes a motor drivingly connected to the respective roll by a cogged belt. The drive for the shiftable roll particularly includes a motor base having a shiftable carrier to which the motor is fixed. The drive further includes a belt tensioning device, preferably in the form of a turnbuckle, that adjustably fixes the motor to the shiftable roll. Thus, the motor normally shifts with the shiftable roll, but the tensioning device may be used to adjust the spacing between the motor and shiftable roll to vary the tension on the belt.

The ducts (24, 26) preferably present smooth, uncorrugated walls (40, 44). In use, aeration air is directed through the inlet duct (24) and then transversely through the ports (42) to the interior (20) of grain bin (12). Such air flows transversely through the grain within bin (12) and is pulled upwardly through outlet duct (26) by means of outlet fan (30). Additional aeration air enters through vents (50) or the grain inlet port (47) and enters the outlet duct ports (46) by passing through the grain.
