  • Patent number: 4317148
Abstract: The transducer for perpendicular magnetic recording comprises a core of high permeability material having a recording pole and a flux return pole spaced apart and connected by an intermediate member forming an inverted generally U-shaped core. The cross sectional area of the flux return pole is substantially greater than that of the recording pole. Current applied to a coil wound around the recording pole generates flux for recording on the magnetic medium. A similarly shaped second core may be disposed on the opposite side of the medium with respect to the first core for providing a flux return path for the first core. A sub-core of high permeability material mounted on the flux return pole forms a gap with the recording pole to provide a ring-type head for data recovery. Current applied to a coil wound on the sub-core saturates the sub-core to render it ineffective during perpendicular magnetic writing.

  • Patent number: 4314188
Abstract: The present invention concerns apparatus for precisely driving the rotors of precision gyroscopes such as small, flexure mounted rate of turn or inertial gyroscopes. The rotor is servo operated subsynchronously whereby a reference frequency generated by a spin frequency reference generator is synchronized with a precisely stable frequency standard, assuring the maintenance of constant rotor speed and permitting precisely calibrated gyroscope torquing. The gyroscope motor rotor is thus spun at a subsynchronous frequency so that the poles in the hysteresis ring are constantly rotating about the ring and their effect on average magnetic bias is averaged substantially to zero. Further, the drive motor is operated at peak efficiency because its excitation is automatically and closely adjusted to be just sufficient to generate only the necessary motor torque for subsynchronous operation.

  • Patent number: 4308576
Abstract: A voltage converter of the transformer type which incorporates at least one switching transistor coupled to control the application of current to the transformer primary and circuitry for switching the transistor on and off to control the current through the primary winding. When the output of the converter is shorted, the switching rate undesirably increases causing potential damage to the converter. A frequency detecting circuit detects the increase in switching frequency and acts to reduce the input voltage to the converter to prevent damage thereto.

  • Patent number: 4305151
Abstract: An adjustable alternating signal having a desired period, P, is applied to a cycle counter arranged to count n cycles and applied to a timer arranged to time out n.multidot.P after a first cycle is applied to the counter and timer. A comparator is coupled to the counter and timer to determine whether the counter reaches its count of n cycles first or whether the timer times out first indicating that the period of the alternating signal is shorter or longer, respectively, than desired. An integrator is responsive to the signal from the comparator for changing the alternating signal which achieves the desired period.

  • Patent number: 4302885
Abstract: A portable gyroscopic compass surveying device includes means for rapidly aligning the apparatus with respect to geographic north, the north finder itself being operated apart from the associated theodolite on its own low mount. The transfer of the azimuth reference data is accomplished optically by sighting the theodolite telescope on a retro-reflector associated with the north finder. Because the north finder is physically separated from the theodolite, sightings may be made by the theodolite operator while the undisturbed north seeking operation is in process, significantly shortening the total time of operation at each station.

  • Patent number: 4302835
Abstract: An apparatus for multiplexing a plurality of sensor signals onto a common transmission line without employing electrically active devices at each sensor. A modulated carrier signal is coupled to propagate along the common transmission line to a plurality of sensor terminals wherefrom portions of the carrier signal energy are coupled to the sensors for the inclusion of data signals and returned therefrom to propagate through a common transmission line to a common demodulator. Modulated carrier signals from each sensor are distinguished by providing a different round trip path length for each sensor, thus establishing unique round trip time delays.

  • Patent number: 4300813
Abstract: An optical transducer for converting pressure variations to variations in amplitude of an optical signal. A first optical transmission line is positioned above a base in a manner to maintain its end face stationary while a second optical transmission line is positioned above the base in a manner to permit the axis to be displaced from the axis of the optical fiber with the stationary end face in accordance with variations of pressure applied thereto. Optical signals propagating in one of the optical transmission lines will couple to the other with a coupling factor dependent upon the axial displacement of the optical fibers. Under conditions of continuous pressure variations, such as that created by an incident acoustic wave, the coupled optical signal will be amplitude modulated in accordance with the pressure variations.

  • Patent number: 4297621
Abstract: A cathode ray dual mode electromagnetic beam deflection amplifier system for providing current for driving a deflection coil, and means for switching between linear and resonant non-linear operational modes. In the linear mode, the deflection coil current is controlled to closely follow an applied input deflection sweep voltage and operates as a push-pull amplifier. In the non-linear resonant mode, one-half the output stage is abruptly decoupled from the deflection coil such that energy stored in the deflection coil is discharged into a series capacitor, the subsequent resonant pulse being returned through the non-decoupled half of the output stage to a power supply.
