    Abstract: An ultrasonic fluid processing method is provided for cavitation and processing a first fluid with a second fluid in a sonication or cavitation zone. The method is useful for preparation of emulsions for chemical and pharmaceutical applications, to gasify liquids for purification, for chemical reactions, to accelerate chemical and physical reactions, and to suspend fine particles. The method includes the steps of, forming a vibration element having an axis and with an adjacent sonication or cavitation zone, enclosing the element and zone in a sealed cavity having a first fluid passage, forming a second fluid passage coaxially with the vibration element and disposed adjacent to the sonication zone, and forming a third fluid passage coaxially with the vibration element and disposed adjacent to the sonication zone. With this method, problems with the control of proportions and amounts and uniformity of parts of fluids being mixed or processed are avoided.

    Abstract: A lubricating film thickness measuring system and method includes a rolling element bearing having a relatively rotatable electrically insulated inner and outer races forming a raceway therebetween. Rolling elements are movably mounted in the raceway. Apparatus is provided for measuring capacitance across the bearing. The measuring apparatus includes an oscillator circuit and a phase detection circuit and is responsive to a phase angle shift between a first signal going from an oscillator circuit to the bearing and from the bearing to the phase detection circuit, and a second signal received by the phase detection circuit directly from the oscillator circuit. The method involves applying a predetermined electrical signal across the rolling elements and measuring the capacitance across the rolling elements thereby providing a measure of the lubricating film thickness.

The mixer and two-way divider each have an output coupling connector. The attenuator has an output pin switch connector. The transmitter has a modulator/amplifier portion, a spectrum filter connected to the modulator/amplifier portion, and a harmonic filter connected to the spectral filter. The harmonic filter has an ouput coupling connector. The test system comprises three dirctional coupler circuits and a pin switch circuit.

    Abstract: A caging system is used in a magnetic platform which is mounted on a pointing system on a spacecraft. The magnetic platform supports a payload, and provides a frictionless support in all conditions. The caging system clamps the payload in a caged condition and provides a frictionless support in an uncaged condition. The caging system includes a plurality of caging actuators. Each caging actuator has an upper support structure which connects to a snubber member, and has a lower support structure which connects to a first ring and to a coaxial second ring for clamping the snubber member. A cylindrical cam member has a plurality of groove surfaces and the first and second rings respectively have a plurality of cam followers. Clockwise rotation of the cam member urges the rings together. Counterclockwise rotation urges the rings apart. A second, auxiliary caging actuator is provided.

    Abstract: An ultrasonic device for applying cavitation force to an unwanted material is provided. The device is particularly useful for removing plaque from a human artery wherein a portion of the device can enter an artery and pass through the artery to the vicinity of the plaque. The device includes a solid wire of titanium material, a transducer, a generator for providing vibration energy via the transducer, and a handpiece enclosing the transducer and having a tapered end portion with an exponential surface of slightly concave profile. The tapered end portion is fixedly connected to an inner end of the wire. For human applications, the wire has an overall length in the range of about 5 inches to 40 inches and has a uniform outer diameter in the range of about from 0.015 inches to 0.040 inches. The device includes a catheter assembly having a catheter tube enclosing the wire and includes a container unit mounted on the tapered end portion of the handpiece.

The meter is particularly useful, in combination with a wire bonding machine, which bonds wires to silicon dice and to hybrid substrate pads by applying a force on the wires. The meter automatically measures the static setup force applied by the machine on the wires, and automatically measures the dynamic bonding force applied by the machine on the wires. The machine is used particularly for bonding wires in a hybrid. The meter overcomes the problem of manual measurement of the static setup force and the problem of not being able to measure the dynamic bonding force.

    Abstract: A space vehicle booster has a lower section and an upper section forming a joint with a seal assembly enclosing a closed cavity. The seal assembly has an upper flange joined to the upper section, and has a lower flange joined to the lower section, and has a collar disposed between the flanges. The flanges are joined by bolts, which slightly compress the collar. The collar has a blind slot, which opens into the closed cavity and which separates an upper collar portion from a lower collar portion. The pressurized gas in the closed cavity urges the upper collar portion against the upper flange and urges the lower collar portion against the lower flange. The collar has an inner pair of "O" rings and an outer pair of "O" rings. Upper and lower chambers are disposed between the "O" rings. A passageway to the chambers has an exterior opening for evacuating the chambers for testing the integrity of the seals prior to launch.

    Abstract: A two-degree of freedom, open loop, spring restrained rate gyro apparatus includes a motor mounted in a housing with a conductive device provided for conducting operating voltages into and out of the housing. A shaft is rotatably mounted in the housing and is connected to be driven by the motor. A ring, having a hub, is connected to the shaft. The ring and hub are interconnected by a torsion bar. A stop is connected to the shaft adjacent the ring so as to define an air gap between the ring and the stop. A pair of variable reluctance pickoffs are mounted in the housing adjacent the ring. The pickoffs also define an air gap between each of the pickoffs and the ring. An optical pickoff is also mounted adjacent the ring. A signal processor is connected to the pair of variable reluctance pickoffs and to the optical pickoff for measuring the rate of the gyro.

The process of bonding the plates in the plate assembly includes the steps of depositing in sequence on base plate face and on the cover plate face, a layer of chromium, a layer of silver, and a layer if indium, and also includes the steps of depositing in sequence on two opposite faces of the resonator plate, a layer of chromium, and a layer of silver, and also includes the steps in sequence of sandwiching the resonator plate between the base plate and the cover plate to form a plate assembly, then evacuating the plate assembly, compressing the plate assembly, and heating the plate assembly to about 310 degrees centigrade for several hours.
