Patent number: 4060435Abstract: There is described a floatable incendiary composition consisting essentially of magnesium powder, an oxidizer and an elastomeric polysiloxane which serves as a binder the amount of polysiloxane being sufficient to bind together the other components of the composition. The compositions are rendered floatable on the surface of water by incorporating into them a quantity of hollow microballoons in sufficient amount to lower the specific gravity of the composition concerned to less than 1.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 1975Date of Patent: November 29, 1977Assignee: Dow Corning CorporationInventor: Fred Schroeder

Patent number: 4026268Abstract: A solar energy collector is made up of a first flat flexible sheet preferably of silicone, and a first sinuous sheet also preferably of silicone, sealingly adhered to the first sheet along a plurality of spaced parallel lines to provide a series of substantially parallel ducts which carry a liquid heat transfer medium. Either the first flat sheet or first sinuous sheet incorporates solar energy absorbent material. A backing member which may include a sheet of reflective foil and a layer of foam insulation is adhered to the opposite side of the first sinuous sheet to form a plurality of substantially parallel air channels under the ducts. Desirably, a solar window which includes a second sinuous sheet with a second flat sheet adhered to the upper amplitudes thereof is adhered to the first flat sheet along the lower amplitudes to space the second flat sheet from the first flat sheet thereby providing a multiplicity of insulative air channels.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1975Date of Patent: May 31, 1977Assignee: Dow Corning CorporationInventors: Donald M. Bartos, Cedric G. Currin

Patent number: 4019932Abstract: There is described an incendiary composition consisting essentially of by weight 20-40 percent magnesium powder, 30-60 percent metallic oxide and the remainder of elastomeric polysiloxane which serves as a binder the amount of polysiloxane being at least 10 percent. A second type of composition consists of 20-50 percent magnesium powder, 20-30 percent polytetrafluoroethylene in particulate form, and the remainder of elastomeric polysiloxane. A third type of composition consists of mixtures of the first and second types in proportions according to the desired specific gravity of the incendiary.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 1976Date of Patent: April 26, 1977Assignee: Dow Corning CorporationInventor: Fred Schroeder

Patent number: 4008708Abstract: A solar energy collector is made up of a plurality of flexible sheets separated by a plurality of extruded flexible spacer members adhered to the sheets in parallel spaced relationship forming channels between the spacer members. The bottom sheet or middle sheet is light absorbing while the top sheet or sheets are light transmitting and all of the sheets and spacer members are desirably formed of silicone rubber or resin, the sheets being reinforced with glass fiber mesh if desired.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1975Date of Patent: February 22, 1977Assignee: Dow Corning CorporationInventor: Robert W. Hagarty

Patent number: 3971163Abstract: This is a method and apparatus for machining a flexible silicone contact lens which utilizes a moving, flexible abrasive tape bearing against the rotating lens to accomplish the desired result. The tape travels in a transverse direction across the lens and may be oscillated to provide a more uniform finish.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 1974Date of Patent: July 27, 1976Assignee: Dow Corning CorporationInventors: Wayne E. Trombley, Lawrence R. Jacobson

Patent number: 3965931Abstract: This application describes a cross-head for directing flowable polymeric materials 90.degree. from the axis of an extruder or similar pressure source and providing substantially uniform pressure patterns at the cross-head output. This is accomplished by dividing and subdividing the stream entering the cross-head, each subdivision taking place on an axis of pressure symmetry and each substream being twisted 90.degree. before reaching its next point of subdivision. The subdivision and twists are accomplished by mounting twisted pieces of flat bar stock in the conduit carrying the stream or substream, each piece having its input end positioned on the axis of symmetry of the stream at the point of stream division.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 1975Date of Patent: June 29, 1976Inventor: Max Skobel

Patent number: 3961003Abstract: Method for making elongated structures such as furnace tubes having at least one flat side from vapor deposited silicon or silicon carbide using a graphite mandrel having a plurality of elongated edge-mated elements held in place by end collars to which an electrical power source is connected. Rectangular tubes can be sawed apart to produce flat plates if desired.Type: GrantFiled: February 4, 1974Date of Patent: June 1, 1976Assignee: Dow Corning CorporationInventor: David L. Parsels

Patent number: 3953876Abstract: Silicon semiconductor device array, e.g. solar cell device or array of devices; formed from bulk silicon deposited in the form of columnar crystallites bounded by substantially vertical grain boundaries. Junctions are formed across crystallites and along grain boundaries. The grain boundaries are made substantially non-conductive by diffusion from one side of the sheet. P.sup.+ and n.sup.+ layers are provided as contact areas for electrodes. Deposition of silicon takes place directly from decomposition of silicon-containing vapors onto a non-silicon substrate sheet.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 1974Date of Patent: April 27, 1976Assignee: Dow Corning CorporationInventors: Erhard Sirtl, Cedric G. Currin
