Abstract: Tin oxide doped with an electrochromically effective amount of a metal, e.g. antimony or niobium, which provides a color change when the doped tin oxide is exposed to an electrochemical potential in the presence of mobile ions. Particles of electrochromic doped tin oxide, e.g. coated on a white or pastel pigment substrate, have a contrast ratio greater than 1.2, where contrast ratio is a measure of electrochromic functionality of a material and is the ratio of reflectance of the material in an oxidized state to the color of the material in a reduced state and where color is a photodiode measurement of the value of light reflected off the oxidized or reduced material from a constant source of light shining on the material. Such doped tin oxide-containing particles are useful as electrochromic material in display devices.
Abstract: There is provided a storage device whose cost is greatly reduced by employing a low-cost claw-pole two-phase synchronous motor as a spindle motor in which the rotation nonuniformity and vertical fluctuation of its shaft are suppressed while suppressing the leakage magnetic flux, by employing an open-loop scheme for motor control, and by mounting a drive circuit on the side of a control LSI for controlling the device to omit a motor control drive circuit (driving IC). The number of basic steps of the claw-pole two-phase synchronous motor is set to 48 steps or more. Stator pole teeth between both sub-assemblies are located within the range of 90.degree..+-.5.degree. in electrical angle. One end surface of a rotor having a field magnet is subjected to index magnetization also serving as rotor chuck magnetization. A magnetic shield plate is arranged on the surface of the rotor opposite to the magnetic head.
Abstract: A saw is described as having an adjustable handle wherein the angle of the handle in relation to the longitudinal axis of the saw blade and blade holder is rotatably adjustable.
Abstract: The invention relates to the discovery of a novel RNA sequence at the 3' terminal sequence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) genome RNA. Included in the invention are the 3' sequence, its complement, and their use for nucleic-acid based diagnostics and for developing and evaluating novel anti-HCV therapies. This sequence element, which is conserved among HCV genotypes, is likely to be essential for viral replication, and required for construction of full-length HCV cDNA clones capable of yielding infections RNA, progeny virus or replication-competent HCV replicons. Such functional clones are useful tools for evaluation of therapeutic approaches and as substrates for developing candidate attenuated or inactivated HCV derivatives for vaccination against HCV.

Abstract: Organically soluble intrinsically conductive polymer compositions having enhanced electrical conductivity are produced by adding a hygroscopic, water-insoluble plasticizer to an organically soluble intrinsically conductive polymer salt. Polymer blends containing such compositions are also produced by blending a matrix polymer with the plasticizer/ICP salt compositions. Methods for enhancing the electrical conductivity of an organically soluble intrinsically conductive polymer salt provide for the addition of a hygroscopic, water-insoluble plasticizer to an organically soluble intrinsically conductive polymer salt.

Abstract: A chromatographic device in which a chromatographic column pivots on a compression cylinder. Prior to pivoting, one end of the column is sealed with an end cap, the column is at least partially filled with a chromatographic medium and a piston is frictionally engaged within the column. The chromatographic column is then pivoted onto the compression cylinder, and the compression device is operated to push the piston into the column with a telescoping rod. The telescoping rod is then retracted, leaving the piston in place. The chromatographic column is then removed from the compression cylinder. A spring assembly is then inserted into column above the piston, and held in place with a torque mechanism mounted on the chromatographic column. The torque mechanism includes a bolt that can be tightened to provide a variable spring pressure against the piston.

Abstract: A breathing monitor for detecting SIDS in infants caused by apnea or the like includes an enclosure which is applied to a baby's torso with a strap. The enclosure is supported by and isolated from the baby's torso in its entirety by a fluid filled bladder coupler such that there is no direct contact between the enclosure and the baby's torso. A detector including a piezoelectric element is connected to the opposite side of the fluid coupler and a battery powered electronic circuit contained within the enclosure flashes an LED as the baby breathes and sounds an alarm should the baby fail to exhale for a predetermined time period. An adjustable strap connector for the strap provides visual indication of the strap being correctly applied and a limited range of permissible motion between the strap and enclosure as the baby breathes.
Abstract: Corrosion of iron-containing metal surfaces in a hydrocarbon fluid having a temperature of from about 175.degree. C. to about 400.degree. C. and containing a corrosive amount of naphthenic acid is inhibited by adding to the fluid or to a feed therefor, in a total additive amount sufficient to effect corrosion inhibition in said fluid, one or more thiophosphorus compound, a salt thereof, an alkyl or aryl ester thereof, an isomer thereof, or some combination of the foregoing, thereby to effect inhibition of naphthenic acid induced corrosion in the fluid.
Abstract: Emulsion-polymerization of electrically conductive polyaniline salts is disclosed. The process comprises combining water, a water-solubilizing organic solvent, an organic acid that is soluble in the organic solvent, an aniline monomer, and a radical initiator. An organic phase forms which contains the polyaniline salt of the organic acid wherein the organic phase is separable from an aqueous phase. The polyaniline salt so formed is soluble in organic carrier solvents at a concentration of 25 w/w % or greater.
Abstract: A vascular prosthesis comprising a tube of material other than autologous vascular tissue but considered/approved as safe and supple enough for use instead of such tissue, the tube having an end formation for surgical connection directly to an opening formed in an artery, the end formation serving to promote, at that end and/or within the direct connection and in response to normally pulsed blood flow, localised movement of blood having a non-laminar nature with a shear stress inducing relation to receiving arterial wall.
Abstract: A circuit operator with a push to test arrangement includes a housing. A first switch is mounted in the housing and has a toggle lever pivotably connected thereto so as to place the toggle switch in its on or off state. A second switch is also mounted in the housing and is connected to a push button for initiating tests. A single switch actuator allows a user to actuate the first switch and/or the second switch from an exterior of the housing.

Abstract: A treadmill comprises a base, a pair of spaced rollers, an endless belt, a control panel, and a forward post. The rollers are journalled in the base. One of the rollers constitutes a rear roller and the other roller constitutes a forward roller spaced forward of the rear roller. The belt is entrained around the rollers. The belt includes an upper reach extending between the rollers and adapted to enable a user to walk or run thereon. The forward post is configured for at least in part supporting the control panel. The post has a lower end margin and an upper end margin The lower end margin is operatively connected to the base and is spaced forward of the forward roller. The upper end margin of the post is configured for supporting the control panel. The post has an arcuately shaped bend extending from its lower end margin to its upper end margin.
