    Abstract: Described is a process for separating a mixture of finely divided minerals into constituents thereof. In particular, the invention relates to a procedure for effecting such separation by a novel selective flocculation technique wherein a dispersed aqueous pulp containing the mixture of minerals is preconditioned for selective flocculation with an anionic polymer by addition of both a fatty acid such as oleic acid and source of polyvalent cation such as calcium chloride. The fatty acid and cation of the salt selectively coat the component of the mixture that is subsequently flocculated with the anionic polymer. A polyacrylate salt dispersant is preferably used in the process. The invention is especially adapted to the separation of colored titaniferous impurities from kaolin clay in which case both a white purified kaolin product and a strongly flocculated dun-colored titania/kaolin mixture are recovered and then dispersed producing a material useful as a paper coating pigment.

    Abstract: Separation of impurities from kaolin clay is accomplished by conditioning a dispersed aqueous pulp of the clay with an anionic flotation collector, followed by centrifugation or the like to cause the impurities to settle from a dispersed pulp of the clay without an intermediate froth flotation step or a flotation waste froth is centrifuged or hydrocloned to recover valuable kaolin contained in the froth.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a vanadium trap for use in FCC which comprises a major amount of calcined kaolin clay, free magnesium oxide and an in situ formed magnesium silicate cement binder. Also disclosed are procedures for the preparation of the trap by forming a slurry in water of hydrous kaolin clay, magnesium oxide or magnesium hydroxide and sodium silicate, aging the slurry to form magnesium silicate in situ, optionally adding additional kaolin, colloidal silica or both, spray drying, and calcining the resulting spray dried microspheres without forming appreciable amounts of crystalline magnesium silicates or crystalline magnesium aluminates.

    Abstract: A method for separating particulate solids from a gaseous stream laden with the solids includes discharging the gaseous stream with a swirling movement downwardly into a containment vessel, and impinging the stream on a bed of the separated solids maintained at the lower end of the vessel to reverse the direction of gas flow upwardly through a return zone which encircles the core zone. The gaseous stream is withdrawn from the return zone at the upper end of the vessel and, optionally, may be passed from the return zone to a second stage separation zone, such as one or more cyclone separators, for removal of residual particulate solids from the gaseous stream. Apparatus of the invention includes a flow-constricting nozzle mounted on a containment vessel and having flow guide vanes and/or gas injection nozzles associated therewith to impart a swirling motion to the gaseous stream which is discharged from the nozzle downwardly into the containment vessel.

    Abstract: Clay, preferably kaolin, is calcined through its exotherm, but without substantial mullite formation (e.g., 1 hour at 1000.degree. C.). The calcined clay is leached with an alkaline aqueous solution to remove (i.e., leach) silica. The severity of leaching, i.e., amount of silica removed, determines whether the final product will comprise mullite plus excess Al.sub.2 O.sub.3. If the molar Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 /SiO.sub.2 ratio is <3/2 the final product will contain mullite plus excess SiO.sub.2 and if the Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 /SiO.sub.2 ratio is >3/2, the final product will contain excess Al.sub.2 O.sub.3. The leached clay is washed, preferably under acid conditions at about pH 3-5, to remove excess alkali ions; and then dried. The washed clay is then calcined at conditions to produce mullite (e.g., 3 hours at 1250.degree. F.). Materials made in this manner exhibit high pore volume despite the final high temperature heat treatment.
