Patent number: 6843720Abstract: A device for dispensing prizes includes a housing having a plurality of compartments, a door attached to the housing for coving the compartments, and a lock for limiting access to the compartments. The contents of the compartments are visible from the outside. Each compartment contains a prize, such as a diamond. The housing may be part of, or linked to, a gaming device. When a player wins a game, which entitles the player to select a tangible award, the device signals this fact to the player. The player then selects a compartment by pressing an input device located on the housing. An attendant opens an external door, and inserts an electronic key into a receptacle associated with the selected compartment, and enters a required code into the key. The compartment then opens, and the player obtains the prize. The device may also include an inventory control system which preferably uses an RFID apparatus for monitoring the contents of each compartment, and for keeping records of an inventory of prizes.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 2001Date of Patent: January 18, 2005Assignee: Sierra Design GroupInventors: Robert A. Patent number: 6817945Abstract: A display device comprising a plurality of prize balls, a ball holder adapted to hold the balls in an individually controlled manner, a controller adapted to select a prize ball, a display mechanism adapted to display the selected prize ball to the player; and a positioning mechanism in communication with the controller adapted to position the selected prize ball relative to the display mechanism. The display device may be combined with a jumbled ball display, or separate, upwardly extending rotatable action ball or unit container with agitated action balls, wherein the balls displayed by the display device appear to originate from the jumbled ball display, or the alternative action ball or unit container. The display device may also be combined with a game apparatus that is adapted to allow players to play a game. In this embodiment, the display device may, preferably in conjunction with a board game, provide a bonus award for the player.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 2002Date of Patent: November 16, 2004Assignee: Atlantic City Coin & Slot Service Company, Inc.Inventors: Jerald C. Patent number: 6814518Abstract: A modular printer system comprising a support frame, a chassis, a media holder, and a printer assembly. The support frame supports the other components and may be attached to other devices. The chassis is slidably attached to the support frame so that it may be at least partially removed from the support frame thereby exposing components attached to the chassis. The chassis is adapted to hold the media holder and the printer assembly. The media holder holds media that may be printed on by the printer assembly. The printer assembly may be removed from the chassis to service the printer assembly and give full access to the media path. The printer assembly comprises a printer for printing on the media and a controller for controlling the printer and communicating with other devices.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 2000Date of Patent: November 9, 2004Assignee: Sierra Design GroupInventors: Robert A. Patent number: 6739970Abstract: A method of playing a wagering game, which is based upon a long-duration, multi-step game is disclosed. The method utilizes an underlying game that allows the player to perform predefined chargeable actions while the player is playing the underlying game. The player is charged for each chargeable action the player performs. The player is awarded a prize if a predefined prize event or condition occurs during the game. A player's skill could determine the amount of credits charged for chargeable actions as well as the duration of the underlying game. The method of the present invention may be applied to solitaire, poker, blackjack, slot machines, keno, bingo, and many other kinds of games.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 2002Date of Patent: May 25, 2004Assignee: Sierra Design GroupInventor: Robert A. Patent number: 6719630Abstract: A gaming device for playing a game. The device has a game display with several display sections. A game controller controls several fractional images that are displayed in the display sections. The game controller randomly selects the fractional image to display in each display section. A winning combination results when the fractional images are aligned such that they form a complete image. The game display can be a set of rotatable reels with each reel carrying the fractional images or the game display can be a video display. The game controller selects a number of times to play the game for the same wager. The number of times to play the game is displayed on a game play meter. Each play of the game generates a base award. The base award of each game is added to obtain a cumulative award. In another embodiment, the game generates a multiplier that is multiplied by the base award or the cumulative award to obtain a total prize.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 2001Date of Patent: April 13, 2004Assignee: Atlantic City Coin & Slot Service Company, Inc.Inventors: Jerald C. Patent number: 6705944Abstract: The specification discloses a multiple game-of-chance. The game occupies the same floor space as a traditional slot machine but has a spinning reel game mounted below a spinning wheel game. The game also an outcome bank for storing outcomes from the spinning wheel game. The spinning reel game may provide an outcome that activates the upper spinning wheel game, and the outcomes in the spinning wheel game can alter the outcome of the lower spinning reel game and also provide a bank of outcomes in the outcome bank, which can also be utilized to alter the outcome, or likely future outcomes, in the spinning reel game. The game also utilizes a flexible, resilient, Z-shaped radial drive gear to drive each of the three wheels in the upper wheel game independently.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2002Date of Patent: March 16, 2004Assignee: Sierra Design GroupInventor: Robert A. Patent number: 6662627Abstract: A photoacoustic sensor that measures carbon black particles emitted in the exhaust gas of a vehicle traveling on a road or being tested on a dynamometer or engine stand. The sensor includes an acoustic waveguide and a pump mounted to an outlet of the waveguide. The pump pulls the gas through the waveguide. A critical orifice is mounted between the pump and the outlet. The critical orifice prevents noise generated by the pump from entering the waveguide. Optical windows are mounted at opposite ends of the waveguide. A modulated source of light is located adjacent one of the windows and irradiates the waveguide. A microphone is attached to the waveguide. The microphone detects an acoustic signal generated by absorption of the light by the particles in the gas. The acoustic signal is proportional to the mass concentration of particles in the gas. The microphone generates an electrical signal proportional to the acoustic signal.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 2001Date of Patent: December 16, 2003Assignee: Desert Research InstituteInventors: William Patrick Arnott, Hans Moosmuller, John W. Method and device for switching wavelength division multiplexed optical signals using emitter arrays
Patent number: 6580845Abstract: A switch device and method is disclosed that is capable of switching wavelength division multiplexed optical signals. The device comprises a switch element, which may include a detector, an emitter array, and a switch controller. The detector is adapted to detect optical signals and is positioned to receive light from a source. The emitter array is positioned to transmit light to a plurality of targets. The emitter comprises a plurality of emitters, each emitter being adapted to generate light signals. The light signals generated by each emitter are transmitted to at least one predetermined target. The switch controller is in communication with the detector and the emitter array. The switch controller is adapted to cause the emitter array to generate the detected signal. The switch elements are grouped in an array and dichroic beam splitters may be used to reflect predetermined ranges of wavelengths to the individual switch elements.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 2000Date of Patent: June 17, 2003Assignee: General Nutronics, Inc.Inventor: Richard B.
