Patent number: 4176200Abstract: Surface discoloration of water-in-oil emulsion type food spreads such as margarines can be reduced by incorporating into the fat or water phase of the spread a substance which makes the optical properties of the spread, when dehydrated, comparable to the optical properties of a freshly prepared spread. Titanium dioxide may be used for this purpose at levels as low as 0.1% by weight of the spread.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 1977Date of Patent: November 27, 1979Assignee: Lever Brothers CompanyInventors: Henricus M. Patent number: 4171968Abstract: A method of treating seeds after they are sown to increase the rate and/or yield of germination is disclosed together with surfactant compositions which will accomplish such favorable germination. The surfactants used must generally not accumulate in the root tissue or in the environment; they must be substantive to root tissue of the seedling as it forms until the surfactant degrades. The surfactants must also be nontoxic at levels employed and must not readily react with hardness ions, such as calcium or magnesium in order to maintain their efficacy in the soil.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 1977Date of Patent: October 23, 1979Assignee: Lever Brothers CompanyInventor: William A. Patent number: 4167561Abstract: The length of time that a disinfecting alkali-metal hypochlorite solution remains active may be controlled by providing for the presence therein of an alkali-metal alpha-hydroxy-beta-sulfosuccinate at pH 2 to 12, reducing the pH to a level below about 9.5, and heating after a desired time, the sulfosuccinate having very little reactivity with the hypochlorite at room temperature, but being more reactive to destroy substantially all of the hypochlorite at elevated temperatures. An additional advantage of the aforementioned solution lies in the ability of the alkali-metal alpha-hydroxy-beta-sulfosuccinate to serve as a detergent builder, sequestrant, and descaling agent at appropriate concentrations and pH levels.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 1975Date of Patent: September 11, 1979Assignee: Lever Brothers CompanyInventors: Vincent Lamberti, Mark D. Patent number: RE30086Abstract: Margarine and low fat emulsion food spreads have been prepared, the fat phase of which consists essentially of randomized palm oil. The randomization is usually carried out on palm oil alone and enables a substantial amount of palm oil to be incorporated into the fat phase without the onset of excessive post-hardening effects. The randomization also minimizes the amount of expensive vegetable oils such as sunflower oil which have hitherto been found necessary adjuncts with palm oil in such products, particularly in recently-developed soft spreads which can be spread directly at domestic refrigerator temperatures. The major part of the spreads of the invention preferably consist of a fat of melting point 25.degree.-30.degree. C., particularly derived from vegetable oils.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1978Date of Patent: August 28, 1979Assignee: Lever Brothers CompanyInventors: Norman J. Carlile, Theodorus J. Van Selm
