  • Patent number: 5369874
Abstract: A radiant electric heater is manufactured by a method which involves providing a base of microporous thermal and electrical insulation material having at least one groove formed in a surface thereof, and providing an elongate electrically conductive strip to serve as a heating element. The elongate electrically conductive strip is located edgewise into the groove and surface pressure is applied to the base of microporous insulation material in a region adjacent to the strip to deform the base and to urge microporous material of the base into contact with the strip so as to secure the strip in the groove.

  • Patent number: 5361942
Abstract: Apparatus for dispensing liquid from an inverted bottle having a neck through which the liquid is discharged, is provided with a mount 32 having a feed tube 34 to project into the neck of the bottle. The feed tube forms part of a reservoir 152 which incorporates a drainage channel 153 to sealably receive the neck of the bottle with closure of drain valve 144. Water travels from the feed tube 34 to a cold reservoir 160 comprising a flexible bag 163 received within a fixed rigid outer 162. Cooled water leaves the bag 163 to a discharge valve 168. The feed tube 34 may also supply a hot water reservoir (FIG. 3 ) which is also replaceable. To maintain strict hygiene, the manifold 152 and both reservoirs are completely replaced at intervals together with the interconnecting pipework.

  • Patent number: 5358087
Abstract: In a turret mill of the kind in which a doughnut 20 moves with the tool head along a threaded vertical rod 1, a tube 4 is slidably mounted on the rod 1 between end plates 5 and 6 which support a turret 7. The turret 7 can be rotated to bring a series of axially adjustable stop elements 9 into position for contact with the doughnut 20, allowing downward movement of the tool head to be stopped in various quickly selectable positions. Such contact with a stop 9 causes the lower plate 6 to act on a head 3 secured to rod 1, which in turn operates a cutout 17 via a lever 16 to stop vertical feed of the tool head. Upward movement of the doughnut 20 engages the upper plate 5, which acts on the rod 1 via a plunger 25 and lever 26, causing the rod to move downwards. This again operates the cutout 17 to stop the tool head.

  • Patent number: 5357082
Abstract: A visual indication is provided in a heater of an electric cooking appliance which incorporates a user-operable multi-position switch for switching the heater from one power output to another. The heater incorporates at least one heating element which is capable of emitting a significant amount of visible radiation, the at least one heating element being de-energized and subsequently re-energized as the heater is switched from one power output to another. Such a heater is of particular value where the heating element is capable of emitting fewer distinct levels of visible radiation than the number of distinct heat settings of the heater selectable from the multi-position switch. The heating element may be de-energized and subsequently re-energized only between adjacent heat settings in which there is no substantial change in the level of visible radiation.

  • Patent number: 5356465
Abstract: A method for visibly marking an area contaminated with transformer oil or other organic liquid uses a marking composition that consists of a colorant held within a solid carrier material, the colorant being such as to effect a visibly perceptible change upon contact with the organic liquid. The carrier material may be an absorbent that permits delivery of the colorant through capillary action, or the colorant may be encapsulated by a cell-forming matrix material that interacts with the contaminating liquid to effect release.

  • Patent number: 5349438
Abstract: The structure of the invention serves to support mirrors defining a reflective channel, which can dynamically be reciprocally widened and narrowed, as in a two-beam interferometer. It is effectively divided, by pivot points on an intermedial axis, into two opposite portions of equal mass, thus affording to the structure immunization against translational forces transmitted through those points. The opposite portions also have their centers of gravity remotely located, so as to generate a counteracting torque in response to moments of rotational inertia transmitted through the pivot points. In the structure, integrally formed planar pieces are assembled to provide contiguous elongate elements and an interposed connecting web element, a plurality of which web elements produce a flexure joint.

  • Patent number: 5346120
Abstract: A letter blank has leading and trailing edges (1 and 2) and side edges (3 and 4). The blank includes a central oblong rectangular letter section (108) and a marginal edge section (205), the latter being joined by perforations (216) and carrying adhesive areas (218, 219 and 220). The letter section (108) can be folded into four portions (212, 213, 214 and 215) by folding along crease lines (9, 10 and 11), forming its own envelope which can be secured by means of the adhesive areas. In the folded configuration the shorter portions (213 and 214) are fully enclosed between the longer portions(212 and 215).

  • Patent number: 5340527
Abstract: At least one edge of a substantially planar panel of microporous thermal insulation material is shaped by first restraining the planar faces of the panel so as to resist deformation of the faces of the panel adjacent to the edge of the panel to be shaped. A forming member is then urged against the edge of the panel so as to shape the edge, the forming member being profiled such as to cause the edge of the panel to be recessed. The forming member is then removed from the edge of the panel so as to permit the panel to adopt a relatively square edge, and the planar faces of the panel are released.

  • Patent number: 5329195
Abstract: A polyphase brushless DC motor has an integral automatic feedback arrangement affording excellent accuracy and a high degree of magnetic balance. The stator pole elements of the motor are identical and equidistantly spaced, and each is wound with two coils. One coil on each pole element comprises sensor circuitry; the other comprises power circuitry. As a result, all pole elements of the stator are utilized both to produce rotor drive torque and also to generate electrical signals that provide highly accurate rotor-position information.

  • Patent number: 5301529
Abstract: A close wound coil is formed by a sequence of steps including supplying a wire to be formed into a coil onto a rotating mandrel by means of a guide wheel and urging the wire against the mandrel by means of a pressure wheel so as to form a coil. The formed coil is allowed to free itself from engagement with the mandrel from a point immediately following that at which the wire is urged against the mandrel by the pressure wheel to the end of the mandrel so that the formed coil, although carried by the mandrel, is unrestrained relative to the mandrel.
