  • Patent number: 6519593
Abstract: Many data sets to be sorted consist of a limited number of distinct keys. Sorting such data sets can be thought of as bundling together identical keys and having the bundles placed in order; we therefore denote this as bundle sorting. We describe an efficient algorithm for bundle sorting in external memory that requires at most c(N/B)logM/Bk disk accesses, where N is the number of keys, M is the size of internal memory, k is the number of distinct keys, B is the transfer block size, and 2<c<4. For moderately sized k, this bound circumvents the &THgr;((N/B)logM/B(N/B)) I/O lower bound known for general sorting. We show that our algorithm is optimal by proving a matching lower bound for bundle sorting. The improved nning time of bundle sorting over general sorting can be significant in practice, as demonstrated by experimentation. An important feature of the new algorithm is that it is executed “in-place”, requiring no additional disk space.

  • Patent number: 6477370
Abstract: In a mobile communication system, a system for providing communication between multiple users in a closed user group arrangement includes, for example, first and second mobile earth terminals (METS) registering with the mobile system. The first MET selects a closed user group network identifier (NET ID) representing a NET group to establish voice communication therewith and transmits the NET ID to a controller. The controller receives the NET ID from the first MET, validates the first MET for communication, validates the NET ID, allocates a frequency for the NET group, and broadcasts the message to the NET group informing the NET group of the allocated frequency. The second MET tunes to the frequency in response to the message broadcast by the central controller. The closed user group arrangement provides security measures to ensure only authorized METs gain access to the NET group, dual standby mode of operation, and/or priority default operation.

  • Patent number: 6477134
Abstract: The present invention is a method and system of marking data media products by introducing a predetermined tracing substance constituting a security marking into a polycarbonate (or polystyrene) composition during the manufacturing stages of the polycarbonate material into a data media, such as a compact disc (CD) or digital versatile disc (DVD). This marking technique is useful in tracking pirated data and/or sources, such as CDs or DVDs, to thereby prevent future pirating of data. Using mass spectrometry, specific types and/or quantities of isotopes of each tracing substance, on a structural level, are used to indicate a specific marking and product identity characteristics, such as a specific lot number, batch number, manufacturer identity, shipping date and the like. The security marking is preferably invisible to the naked eye. The security marking technique is also useful for tracking, authenticating and quality control purposes.

  • Patent number: 6385512
Abstract: A technique for transferring an object such as a spacecraft to one of the stable Lagrange points, for instance L4 or L5, utilizes a substantially negligible amount of delta-V. In doing so, payload amounts may be increased. Initially, a modified weak stability boundary transfer with parameters sufficient to transfer the spacecraft from a first heavenly object or a first heavenly object orbit to a vicinity of a second heavenly object is performed. Then, the spacecraft is momentarily captured at a capture point located in the vicinity of the second heavenly object. Upon capture, a maneuver is executed at the capture point to target the stable Lagrange point utilizing a substantially negligible amount of propellant. Finally, the spacecraft arrives at the stable Lagrange point.

  • Patent number: 6340159
Abstract: A “Double Cross™” crossword puzzle game is a method of playing a game that allows players to compete to complete a crossword puzzle. The game includes a game board which is configured as a grid of squares with a video screen in the center of the board which can be used to display written or visual clues to help solve the crossword puzzle. The players alternate controlling the selection of clues; when they answer a clue correctly they continue to control the selection, and when they answer incorrectly the clue selection passes to the next player. The game also allows players, having selected a clue, to “double cross” an opponent by challenging that opponent to answer the clue, exposing that opponent to the danger of losing some or all of his accumulated points. The game also includes a final phase where the leading player, or all of the players, must solve a word puzzle consisting of only two interlocking words.

  • Patent number: 6341250
Abstract: When a satellite is orbiting the earth in an elliptic orbit, it has a certain inclination with respect to the earth's equator. The usual way to change the inclination is perform a maneuver by firing the rocket engines at the periapsis of the ellipse. This then forces the satellite into the desired inclination. There is a substantially more fuel efficient way to change the inclination. This is done by an indirect route by first doing a maneuver to bring the satellite to the moon on a BCT (Ballistic Capture Transfer). At the moon, the satellite is in the so called fuzzy boundary or weak stability boundary. A negligibly small maneuver can then bring it back to the earth on a reverse BCT to the desired earth inclination. Another maneuver puts it into the new ellipse at the earth. In the case of satellites launched from Vandenberg AFB into LEO in a circular orbit of an altitude of 700 km with an inclination of 34°, approximately 6 km/s is required to change the inclination to 90°.
