    Abstract: A base station in a soft handoff adjusts its transmit power level by a first amount if the base station is participating in a soft handoff and by a second amount if the base station is not participating in the soft handoff, i.e. in simplex mode. The first and second amounts are different. In one embodiment of the invention, the adjustment is performed by using a down-step size that is larger in magnitude than an up-step size when the base station is in soft handoff. The transmit power level is then adjusted by the smaller up and larger down step sizes when the base station receives an indication to adjust the transmit power level. The step sizes used when the base station is in simplex mode is larger than the up-step size and smaller than the down step size.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus to quickly adjust a targeted Eb/N0 in a wireless communication system by using an effective Eb/N0 for each frame. The Eb/N0 distribution of a frame produces a certain frame error rate. Effective Eb/N0 is the Eb/N0 that would produce the same frame error rate in a model channel, such as an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. The effective Eb/N0 for each frame is obtained and compared to a model targeted Eb/N0. The Eb/N0 for all of the power control groups in one frame compose the vector Eb/N0. The effective Eb/N0 for the frame is obtained by mapping a vector Eb/N0 into a scalar. The model targeted Eb/N0 is the Eb/N0 value that produces a desired frame error rate in the model channel. The targeted Eb/N0 is increased by one up step size when the effective Eb/N0 is smaller than the model targeted Eb/N0 and is decreased by one down step size when the effective Eb/N0 is larger than the model targeted Eb/N0. Eb/N0 are measured for each power control group in a frame.

    Abstract: A method that initiates call blocking responsive to a call-quality measurement of the forward link. The call-quality measurement is a measurement of how well a mobile terminal is able to receive the forward link. One call-quality measurement is a pilot fraction of the forward link, which is a ratio of the pilot's power level to the power level of a set of forward-link signals of a base station. Call blocking is initiated when an average pilot fraction is below a pilot-fraction blocking threshold. The pilot's power level is obtained for a time period, and the signal set's power level is obtained for the same time period. The pilot fraction is determined for the time period, and then used to determine the average pilot fraction for the time period. The average pilot fraction for the current time period is based on a pilot fraction for the current time period, and an average pilot fraction for a previous time period.

    Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, a duplex radio communication system comprises an Interrogator which generates a radio signal to at least one remote Tag. The remote Tag receives the radio signal. The Tag then generates a subcarrier signal, and using Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK), modulates an information signal onto the subcarrier. A Backscatter Modulator, using this modulated subcarrier, modulates the reflection of the radio signal, the reflected signal being a reflected modulated signal. The Interrogator receives and demodulates the reflected modulated signal to obtain the information signal. In one embodiment, demodulation utilizes a homodyne detector. In another embodiment, the Interrogator modulates an information signal onto the radio signal, transmits that modulated radio signal to the Tag, and the Tag demodulates that modulated radio signal to recover the information signal.

The collection of radio controllers manages the collection of radio sets.     Abstract: A system provides a mobile transmitter and a plurality of boundary tags for receiving communication from the mobile transmitter. Preferably the mobile transmitter is coupled to a mobile unit, which can be an inanimate object capable of moving or being moved, or a living being. The boundary tags mark the boundaries of an area within which the mobile unit is allowed to move. The mobile transmitter transmits a signal to a boundary tag. The system determines if the mobile transmitter has come into proximity of a boundary tag by receiving a reflected modulated signal from the boundary tag. If the mobile transmitter has come into proximity of a boundary tag a response is generated. The response can be a stimulus or an alert, or both. The response can be generated at a central control station, or at a mobile transceiver that includes the mobile transmitter and a mobile receiver. In one embodiment, the boundary tag modulates a reflection of the signal transmitted by the mobile transmitter.

    Abstract: A contention-based network which allows real-time traffic to exist as multiple independent linked-list chains or under certain conditions to be assembled into multiple linked-list chains. A time separation is enforced between the various multiple chains, which are limited to a predetermined maximum number of stations that each can have in order to allow non-real-time stations to obtain timely access to the medium. Ones of the multiple chains may also be joined into a single chain. Blackburst contention is used to enable a chain to be reconstituted robustly from non-anticipated interruptions, such as the failure of one of its stations.

    Abstract: A time slotted system capable of switching between two or more antennas during the guard times of the time slots. Switching between antennas during the guard time of the time slots eliminates any disturbance to the user, since it eliminates any loud noise, or popping that can occur during the switching between antennas. The beamwidth of each of the antennas is narrower than needed to cover a sector of a cell of the system, increasing the size of the cell due to the larger gain of the narrower beamwidth antenna elements. The system also includes a scanning radio for determining the optimal signal amongst the signals received on the antennas, and a switch for coupling the antenna receiving the optimal signal to a receiver system. In one embodiment of the invention the optimal signal is based on the information content of the signal, such as the signal's bit error rate.

    Abstract: A clamp for clamping an electronic component to a circuit board. The clamp has a frame capable of deflection, a spacer structure, and fasteners. The spacer structure has a first and second spacer. One, or both, of the spacers have an opening through at least a portion the spacer in the location where the spacer is positioned over the component. The opening places most of the force of the clamp on the walls of the package of the component. The walls can withstand more force than the lid of the package of the component because the walls are more rigid. This allows the clamp to exert a larger force on the component without cracking the thin lid of the package. The frame has a top section whose central portion is capable of deflection.

    Abstract: An enclosure having two walls an attenuation distance apart from each other perpendicular to the plate of the enclosure. At least one of the walls is orbitally riveted or soldered to the plate of the enclosure. Having two walls an attenuation distance from each other is particularly advantageous for RF components. The two walls can be placed to surround the RF component to reduce the RF energy generated by the component that escapes in to the atmosphere, or the two walls can be placed to separate the RF component from other component in the same enclosure to reduce the interference of the RF component with the other components. Alternatively, the enclosure can have a single wall orbitally riveted to the plate of the enclosure with an RF gasket attached to the entire length of the wall to reduce the amount of RF energy that is able to pass around the wall.

This allows solder to be deposited onto the circuit board with an automated surface mounted assembly system and components to be attached to the circuit board after the circuit board is attached to back plate. A portion of this opening has a diameter as large as the diameter of the widest portion of the head and another portion of this opening, located closer to the back plate has a smaller diameter.

The data packages may include a reference parameter corresponding to the position of the fragment in the displayable message. Further, a reference parameter may indicate the total size of the displayable message being fragmented and packaged.

The Tag's personal encryption key is only known by the financial database and the RFID Tag. This method can be applied to any type of financial, debt, identification, or credit card.

A Backscatter Modulator modulates the reflection of the radio signal using a subcarrier signal, thereby forming a reflected modulated signal. The Interrogator receives and demodulates the reflected modulated signal. Based upon the characteristics of the demodulated signal, the Interrogator can determine the identity of the Tag, and the relative velocity of the Tag with respect to the Interrogator. The Interrogator can also determine if motion exists in the vicinity of the Interrogator, even when no Tag is present, without the need for a separate motion detection system. The characteristics of the demodulated signal, can also be used to determine the characteristics of motion of the Tag, such as the vibrational frequency.

    Abstract: A radio communications system is that can determine the location of an RFID Tag. The radio communication system includes at least one Interrogator for generating and transmitting a modulated radio signal to one or more Tags. The Interrogator is at a known location, and is in motion with respect to the Tag at a known velocity. One or more Tags of the system receive and demodulate the modulated radio signal, which contains a first information signal which specifies which Tag or Tags should respond using Modulated Backscattering. The Tag generates a subcarrier signal, and backscatter modulates the reflection of the radio signal using the subcarrier signal, thereby forming a reflected signal. The Interrogator receives and demodulates the reflected signal. The Interrogator then determines the Tag's relative direction from the location and velocity of the Interrogator, and from the Doppler shift of the subcarrier signal. More than one of such measurements allow the location of the Tag to be determined.

    Abstract: A method of forming a thick interlevel dielectric layer containing sealed voids formed in a controlled manner, over a substantially planar surface in semiconductor device structure, and the semiconductor structure formed according to such a method. The sealed voids are used to reduce interlevel capacitance. A plurality of metal signal lines are formed over a globally planarized insulator. A thick layer of first conformal interlevel dielectric is deposited over the metal signal lines and over the intermetal spacings formed between the metal signal lines. Because of the thickness, flow properties, and manner of deposition of the interlevel dielectric and the aspect ratio the intermetal spacings, voids are formed in the first conformal interlevel dielectric, in the intermetal spacings. This interlevel dielectric is then etched or polished back to the desired thickness, which exposes the voids in the wider intermetal spacings, but does not expose voids in the narrower intermetal spacings.
