Patent number: 4653368Abstract: A method and apparatus for severing successive lengths of tubing in a die set in which the movement of an upper die shoe is translated by mechanism to clamp the tubing on a lower die shoe, move a notching blade across the clamped tubing to slot the tubing, and pass a cutoff blade through the slot to sever the tubing. Use of a lever arm pivoted to one of the die shoes in combination with a cam on the other die shoe optimizes horizontal movement of the notching blade relative to vertical movement of the die shoes. In a preferred form, the cutoff blade is passed through a slot in the notching blade holder. The die set can be used in apparatus where the tubing is intermittently supplied, or, as in a tubing mill, a continuous length of tubing is moved during the severing process.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 1985Date of Patent: March 31, 1987Inventors: John F. Patent number: 4648519Abstract: A container or bottle closure in the form of a one-piece cap. The cap is formed with a flat top and a depending skirt having means for attachment to the container neck such as internal threads which mate with complementary threads on the container. An annular flange depends downwardly from the cap top to act as a sealing between the closure and the container. A vent is provided through the cap top to equalize the container pressure to atmospheric pressure. The vent takes the form of a plurality of orifices created by a laser beam which produces a hole of a diameter of 0.003 inches or less. Gas may flow equally well from the inside of the container outwardly or from the outside of the container inwardly, depending upon the pressure difference. The orifice diameter is sufficiently small to prevent the flow of a liquid product through the holes under the same pressure difference.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 1986Date of Patent: March 10, 1987Assignee: Sunbeam Plastics CorporationInventor: Kenneth R.
