Abstract: A process for the manufacture of a compound of the formula IIIa ##STR1## wherein R.sup.2 is lower alkyl and R.sup.3 is lower alkanoyl or arylcarbonyl comprising reducing a compound of formula II ##STR2## wherein R.sup.2 is lower alkyl and R.sup.3 is lower alkanoyl or arylcarbonyl or a salt thereof with Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Abstract: The invention relates to specific bicyclic imidazole compounds such as 5-(p-cyanophenyl)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroimidazo[1,5-a]pyridine, or pharmaceutically acceptable non-toxic salts thereof, for the treatment of hyperaldosteronism, and to a method of treating hyperaldosteronism using such compounds, as well as to the use of said compounds for the preparation of pharmaceutical compositions for the treatment of hyperaldosteronism.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of a compound of formula ##STR1## or a salt thereof, wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen or trialkylacetyl, R.sub.2 is hydrogen or acetyl and R.sub.3 is alkyl, which process comprises cyclising a compound of formula ##STR2## wherein R.sub.1 is trialkylacetyl and, if desired, converting a compound of formula I obtainable by said process or in another manner, or a salt thereof, into another compound of formula I or a salt thereof, or converting a resultant free compound of formula I into a salt and/or a resultant salt into the free compound of formula I or into another salt.

Abstract: There is disclosed a process for the preparation of analytically pure chelate complexes which can be used in diagnostic medicine, for example as contrast media or radiopharmaceuticals. The process comprises transcomplexing a complex of a .beta.-dicarbonyl compound and a metal ion, for example a metal acetylacetonate, which is readily soluble in an organic solvent that is not miscible in all proportions with water, with a stoichiometric amount or with a less than equivalent amount of a chelating agent whose binding affinity for the metal ion is greater than that of the .beta.-dicarbonyl compound.

Abstract: Described is a novel process for the introduction of an organic acyl radical selectively at the nitrogen atom of the amino group of desferrioxamine B or of a partially O-acylated derivative thereof. It comprises treating a derivative of desferrioxamine B, in which the amino nitrogen and the hydroxy oxygen of at least one of the hydroxamic acid groupings carries an organic silyl group, with an organic acylating agent and then removing the silyl groups present. The novel N- and O-silylated starting materials can be manufactured, preferably in situ, by reacting an appropriate derivative of desferrioxamine B that has at least one hydroxy group and the amino group in free form, with an organic silicon halide.

Abstract: Contact lenses which are optically clear, wettable, flexible, of high oxygen permeability and substantially non-swellable in the aqueous ocular environment of use, of a polymer containing polyoxyalkylene backbone units are disclosed, as well as the preparation thereof and methods of treating vision defects therewith.

Abstract: The invention relates to a transdermal therapeutic system in the form of a multilayer plaster for the administration of active substances which are able to permeate, in the form of a matrix system containing at least three layers:(a) a covering layer which is impermeable for the constituents of the reservoir b);(b) a reservoir layer which is able to deliver active substance and which consists of optionally crosslinked block copolymer based on styrene, alkadienes and optionally alkenes mixed with adhesive polymers and is optionally provided with an additional adhesive membrane layer and contains at least one active substance capable of skin permeation, at least one agent promoting the skin permeability of active substances and optionally further pharmaceutical auxiliaries, and(c) a protective film which can be pulled off the reservoir layer.

Abstract: The present invention relates to compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.c is carboxy, esterified carboxy or amidated carboxy;R.sub.2 is hydrogen or lower alkyl or joins with R.sub.a and R.sub.b and the atoms therebetween to form a fused ring ##STR2## and either R.sub.a is methyl and R.sub.b is ##STR3## or R.sub.2 and R.sub.b and the atoms therebetween form a group wherein R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are either both hydrogen, or together are propylene, butylene, or with the two atoms to which they are attached form a benzene ring. Methods of manufacture and use thereof in the production of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors are disclosed.

Abstract: A method of reducing serum uric acid and/or increasing renal clearance of uric acid in a mammal in need thereof comprising administering to such mammal a uricosuric effective amount of a thromboxane synthetase inhibitor, a thromboxane receptor antagonist, or both in a combined uricosuric effective amount is disclosed. Compositions having one or more of the foregoing in combination with one or more known uricosurics are also set forth.

Abstract: A method for disinfecting a contact lens comprises immersing the lens in an aqueous solution of H.sub.2 O.sub.2 having a pH of 4 or below and adding to the solution a neutralizing agent comprising a catalyst for decomposing any residual H.sub.2 O.sub.2 and a retarding agent for delaying the decomposition of the H.sub.2 O.sub.2 for a predetermined time in order to permit sterilization of the lens to be substantially complete. The retarding agent preferably comprises either a polymeric coating which dissolves gradually in the H.sub.2 O.sub.2 solution or a semipermeable membrane enveloping the catalyst. The neutralizing agent preferably also contains an auxiliary material which raises the pH of the acidic H.sub.2 O.sub.2 solution. The enzymatic decomposing agent can be embedded in a particulate carrier substance forming the bottom part of a two part container, the upper part of which contains an aqueous solution of H.sub.2 O.sub.
