Abstract: The invention comprises a process for stripping disks coated by the process disclosed in the parent application described above. According to that process, the disks are rotated at high speed during a media application step, then immersed in an orienting magnetic field, and finally dried at low speed. If a flaw is detected after drying, according to the stripping and recoating process of the present invention, the disk is simply stripped and recoated by merely repeating the high speed coating step. During stripping and recoating, the nozzle starts at the outside diameter and moves toward the inside diameter. As the nozzle moves from outside diameter to inside diameter, the new media which is discharged from the nozzle onto the disk strips away the old media layer. Once the nozzle reaches the inside diameter, it moves back toward the outside diameter and applies a new layer of media to the disk.
Abstract: A process for providing a color image comprises exposing a radiation sensitive layer over a vapor deposited colorant layer and vaporizing the colorant to selectively transmit the colorant through the exposed layer. The change in solubility, penetrability and/or crosslinking or polymerization causes differential migration through the exposed layer.

Abstract: A two axis linear motor for carrying the objective lens for optical focusing and optical tracking in an optical recording system has a stationary structure for providing a magnetic field and a moving armature structure. The stationary structure may have two permanent magnets and several pole pieces to properly shape the field with respect to the armature. In one embodiment, a central elongated pole piece and two parallel adjacent elongated pole pieces which are associated with two permanent magnets to form flux gaps with the central pole piece. Flux returns to the magnets through a lower pole piece to which the central pole piece is attached. The central and lower pole pieces have an aperture through which the laser beam may pass on its way to and from the objective lens.
Abstract: A process for isomerizing xylenes containing ethylbenzene to obtain near equilibrium amounts of paraxylene and to convert the ethylbenzene to hydrocarbons readily removable from the xylenes. The isomerization reaction uses a ZSM-5 type catalyst with 0.05 to 1.5 percent of an added metal such as zinc, cadmium, or barium. The isomerization is carried out in the absence of added hydrogen at low pressure, preferably between about 0 and 200 psig. Relatively low xylene losses are achieved even at high ethylbenzene conversion levels.
Abstract: A slide lock mechanism for restraining movement of the carriage of a disk drive comprises a rod slideably supported by the disk drive housing for movement between two rest positions. A lock pin, fastened to a shaft engaging the rod, is moveable between a lock and unlock position to bias a pin, fastened to the carriage, against a stop when the rod is in one of its rest positions. An over-center spring, fastened to the housing and rod biases the rod to its two rest positions.
Abstract: Disclosed is a sector mark decoder for an optical recorder. Sector marks are prerecorded on the optical recording surface and comprise a series of evenly spaced marks. Data is recorded on the media in a fixed block code via holes burned into the optical recording surface. Both sector marks and data are detected by common apparatus, but are distinguished from each other by their different recording format. The location of a hole or a prerecorded mark is determined by comparing two sample and hold cells in a comparator. One holds the read signal value received at one disk position and compares it to the signal value held in the other sample and hold cell received at the previous position. If the comparison results in a new higher valued signal being found, the output of the comparator changes. The new higher valued signal is retained and the other sample and hold cell samples at the next disk position. This sequence continues until a sector mark has been decoded.
Abstract: The novel device prepares samples of loose particles such as roofing granules to present a level surface from which colorimeter measurements can be made. The particles to be measured overfill a dish, the lip of which has a bevel providing a knife edge at its inner diameter. A roller is rolled back and forth across the dish to push excess particles beyond the knife edge from which they fall through a grid on which the dish rests.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of alpha olefin oligomers having predominantly terminal unsaturation using a catalyst system comprising an alkyl aluminum halide component and a second component comprising at least one zirconium compound, preferably in combination with at least one titanium compound. There is also disclosed a catalyst composition for use in this process.
Abstract: 5-Deoxy-3-O-arylmethyl or substituted arylmethyl-1,2-O-alkylidene-a-D-xylofuranose and 5-C-alkyl and alkenyl derivatives thereof. The compounds are useful as herbicides and plant growth regulators.
Abstract: Polymeric compositions are provided in which perfluoropolyethers have been solubilized in non-fluorinated solvents by combining them with a solubilizing agent such as azotic conjugated compounds, and phosphorylated compounds. Typical of the perfluoropolyethers is ##STR1## Typical of the solubilizing agents is phosphorylated methacryloyloxyhydroxypropylisophthalate. The perfluoropolyether and the solubilizing agent are mixed to form a paste which is soluble in organic solvents such as methylethylketone. These compositions find utility as protective lubricant coatings for thin film magnetic recording media. They have the advantage that only one coating step is required in order to apply both the phosphorylated compound and the lubricating polyether. Recording media lubricated with these compositions have demonstrated excellent wear characteristics.

Abstract: In fabricating a PROM cell, an electrical isolation mechanism (44 and 32) is formed in a semiconductive body to separate islands of an upper zone (36) of first type conductivity (N) in the body. A semiconductor is introduced into one of the islands to produce a region (48) of opposite type conductivity (P) that forms a PN junction with adjacent semiconductive material of the island. Ions are implanted to convert a surface layer (60) of the region into a highly resistive amorphous form which is irreversibly switchable to a low resistance state. A path of first type conductivity extending from the PN junction through another of the islands to its upper surface is created in the body to complete the basic cell.

Abstract: A multi-layer magneto optical thin film recording medium is disclosed having very high carrier-to-noise ratios (at least 47 decibels) and high rotation angles. A transmission electron microscope photomicrograph (at 200,000 X) of one such medium is shown in FIG. 1. The magneto optic layer is a multi-phase amorphous material having magnetic anisotropy perpendicular to the plane of the thin film produced in a triode vacuum sputtering process at vacuums in the range of 4.times.10.sup.-3 to 6.times.10.sup.-4 Torr. Various transparent layers, such as dielectric intermediate and anti-reflective layers and a protective covering layer, are combined with the magneto optic layer and a reflective surface to yield media having enhanced carrier-to-noise ratio and magnetic optic angle of rotation.

Abstract: An ISL structure is fabricated by a process in which impurities are introduced into a semiconductor substrate (10) of first type conductivity (P) to form major and minor portions (18 and 18a) of a first region of opposite second type conductivity (N). The minor portion has a lower net impurity concentration than the major portion and extends to a considerably lesser depth. An impurity is introduced into the major and minor portions to form a second region (24) of first type conductivity. An impurity is introduced into the second region to form a third region (30) of second type conductivity spaced laterally apart from the minor portion. Metallization is then performed to create at least one Schottky rectifying contact (32) with the major portion and ohmic contacts (38, 36, and 34) with the substrate and second and third regions.
