Abstract: An apparatus includes a substrate with a planar surface, a multilayer of semiconductor layers located on the planar surface, a plurality of electrodes located over the multilayer, and a dielectric layer located between the electrodes and the multilayer. The multilayer includes a 2D quantum well. A first set of the electrodes is located to substantially surround a lateral area of the 2D quantum well. A second set of the electrodes is controllable to vary a lateral width of a non-depleted channel between the substantially surrounded lateral area of the 2D quantum well and another area of the 2D quantum well. A third set of the electrodes is controllable to vary an area of a non-depleted portion of the lateral area.

Abstract: A method includes maintaining temporally parallel DSL data communication sessions with DSL modems of a group via a set of lines. The method includes, in response to substantially stopping to receive DSL communications from one of the DSL modems via one of the lines, transmitting a substantially reduced average power to the one of the lines and monitoring the one of the lines to determine whether DSL communications have restarted being received from the one of the DSL modems. The method also includes resuming the maintaining of the temporally parallel DSL communication sessions in response to the monitoring determining that DSL communications have restarted being received from the one of the DSL modems.

Abstract: An apparatus includes one or more optical de-interleavers. Each optical de-interleaver includes an optical component having a first pair of optical input and output ports and a second pair of optical input and output ports and a 1×2 optical coupler. Each optical output port of the optical component is optically connected to a corresponding optical port of the 1×2 optical coupler. The optical component is constructed to operate as a first optical filter for light propagating between the optical ports of the first pair and is constructed to operate as a second optical filter for light propagating between the optical ports of the second pair. The first and second optical filters have substantially regularly spaced and interleaved passbands.
Abstract: An electro-mechanical actuator includes a comb drive and a deformable connector. The comb drive has a first capacitor plate and a second capacitor plate. The capacitor plates have teeth capable of inter-digitating. The deformable connector is configured to apply a mechanical restoring force to the first capacitor plate. The deformable connector is configured to restore the first capacitor plate to be at an equilibrium rest position in response to no control voltage being applied across the capacitor. The comb drive is more engaged at the equilibrium rest position than at a mechanical stability threshold of the comb drive. The capacitor plates are disengaged at the equilibrium rest position.

Abstract: A method includes an act of providing a crystalline substrate with a diamond-type lattice and an exposed substantially (111)-surface. The method also includes an act of forming a graphene layer or a graphene-like layer on the exposed substantially (111)-surface.
Abstract: One method includes setting up an authenticated communication session between a mobile terminal and a first core data network. The method includes acquiring, at the first core data network, supplementary access data usable by the mobile terminal to set up a non-authenticated communication session with a second data network and then, transmitting the supplementary access data from the first core data network to the mobile terminal. The second data network is accessible to the mobile terminal.
