Patent number: 5709194Abstract: An improved electronically-controlled heavy fuel oil (HFO) injection system comprises a pumping chamber for pressurizing fuel and a direct-operated check for controlling fuel injection. A control fluid different from the fuel is used to operate regulating apparatus for controlling the fuel injection pressure and fuel injection timing. The regulating apparatus isolate the HFO from sensitive mechanisms by appropriate exposure of the control fluid to flush intruding HFO from those mechanisms. Pressurization of fuel begins before the start of fuel injection. Fuel injection is initiated by exposing one end of the check to low pressure control fluid while the other end is exposed to high pressure fuel. Fuel injection is terminated by exposing the one end to high pressure control fluid to hydraulically balance the check and allow a biasing device to close the check.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 1996Date of Patent: January 20, 1998Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventor: Michael E. Patent number: 5680988Abstract: A reciprocating piston/barrel assembly, through which a fluid is capable of flowing, includes a piston having a pressure face separated from a downstream face by a side surface. A barrel has an interior wall surface defining a bore that is sized to slidably receive the piston. The bore is longer than the piston such that the bore includes an upstream volume adjacent the pressure face of the piston and a downstream volume adjacent the downstream face of the piston. The assembly includes some way for producing a pressure differential between the upstream volume and the downstream volume. The side surface and/or interior wall surface include at least one surface irregularity--indentation and/or protrusion--of sufficient size to increase flow resistance. In order to produce the axial force effect of the present invention, the fluid flow between the piston side surface and the barrel's interior wall surface must be faster than the speed of the piston.Type: GrantFiled: January 20, 1995Date of Patent: October 28, 1997Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Rajendra K. Patent number: 4606694Abstract: Load skidding vehicles commonly include a grapple assembly (42) which under load conditions can pivot rearwardly about its support point (52) resulting in disproportionate loading of the rear wheels and consequently instability of the vehicle. A connecting member (62) is pivotally attached between the grapple (42) and a hydraulic cylinder (74) which is attached to the skidder (2). Operation of the hydraulic cylinder (74) causes the grapple (42) to rotate about its support pivot (52). The hydraulic cylinder (74) may be locked causing the grapple (42) to be locked in relation to the boom assembly (26). During load hauling operations this mechanism is used to lock the load in a position near the vehicle resulting in increased stability. The mechanism is also of use in positioning the grapple assembly (42) with respect to the load prior to grasping it.Type: GrantFiled: January 5, 1983Date of Patent: August 19, 1986Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Thomas C. Patent number: 4235416Abstract: A valve apparatus for controlling fluid flow therethrough. A valve support body attached to an elongated stem is housed in an internal opening of a valve body which is externally mateable with a valve seat. Mateable surfaces on the valve body and valve seat are spherical so as to ensure complete engagement therebetween for misalignments between the stem-supported valve body and the valve seat. An antivibration or stabilizing ring situated between the support body and the valve body within the internal opening permits rotation of the valve body about the support body during valve closure to compensate for large stem-valve seat misalignments while restricting relative oscillatory, vibrating motion between the support body and valve body when the valve is in the open, unengaged configuration. Maximum vibration resistance and free rotatability of the valve body is obtained by disposing the stabilizing ring to occupy a position in the plane formed by the contact line between the valve body and seat.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 1978Date of Patent: November 25, 1980Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: Bernard L. Patent number: 4216569Abstract: A method for inserting a tube through a tubesheet aperture and expanding it into contact with the aperture's wall. A tube guide-expander device is assembled in an open end of a tube with a portion of the device protruding from the tube. The guide-expander includes a distally protruding tip portion tapered to diverge in a direction toward the tube so as to facilitate insertion of the guide-expander and engaged tube through apertures in spatially separated tube supports and tubesheet. The guide-expander and tube engaged therewith are axially displaced relative to the tubesheet until the desired relative configuration is obtained. Expansion of the tube results from expanding the assembled tube guide-expander and driving the housing tube in the radial direction against the tubesheet aperture's wall. Such guide-expander expansion obtains from relatively axially displacing two structural components and compressing an interposed, radially expansible structure.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 1978Date of Patent: August 12, 1980Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: Richard L.
