Abstract: A method and coating are provided for temporarily protecting a substrate or article during shipping, handling or storage by applying a removable protective coating over at least a portion of the substrate. The substrate may be flat or curved and may have zero, one or more functional coatings. A plurality of substrates with the protective coating of the invention may be arranged in a shipping container so that the protective coating reduces the possibility of damage to the substrate or optional functional coating. In one embodiment, the protective coating is the evaporation or reaction product of an aqueous coating composition containing a polyvinyl alcohol polymer which may be subsequently removed by aqueous washing, thermal decomposition or combustion. In another embodiment, the protective coating is formed by sputtering a substantially carbon coating onto the substrate. The carbon coating is subsequently removed by combustion.

Abstract: A coating composition comprising a solution in a volatile organic solvent of: i) a polyisocyanate, ii) a hydroxyl functional polymer, the polyisocyanate comprising a mixture of an aliphatic polyisocyanate having an average isocyanate functionality of 2.5 or more, and diphenylmethane diisocyanate.
Abstract: A fire retardant, intumescent, curable composition for use in composite materials has as its principal ingredients a curable resin system and a fire retardant combination of a polyhydroxy compound, a polyphosphate, a nitrogen-containing compound and a polyacrylate monomer. Significant reduction of the flame spread index is achieved.

Abstract: A fast-drying coating composition intended primarily as an automotive clear coat contains
(A) 25 to 80 weight percent of an acrylic polyol which is the polymerization product of unsaturated monomers of which 0.5 to 15 percent by weight (based on resin solids weight of the monomers) is an acrylate having the structure:
where R1=H or CH3,
R3 is H or an alkyl group, R4 is an alkyl group, and R5 is an alkyl group containing at least four carbon atoms; and
(B) 20 to 75 weight percent of a curing agent reactive with hydroxyl groups, particularly polyisocyanates.

Abstract: A multi-component composite coating composition is provided which includes a pigmented base coat and a transparent topcoat composition applied over the base coat. The transparent topcoat is deposited from a substantially solvent free film-forming composition which includes a thermosettable dispersion of polymeric microparticles having functionality adapted to react with a crosslinking agent and a hydrophilic crosslinking agent reactive with the functionality of the microparticles. The microparticles are prepared from one or more reaction products of ethylenically unsaturated monomers, one or more hydrophobic polymers and one or more hydrophobic crosslinking agents. Pigmented film-forming compositions as well as curable compositions containing the above-described dispersions also are provided. A method of forming the dispersion of polymeric microparticles is provided.

Abstract: A coated substrate is provided which includes an outer coating formed from a film-forming composition which includes a crosslinkable, non-gelled acrylic polymer and a crosslinking material capable of reacting with the acrylic polymer to form a crosslinked outer coating. The acrylic polymer is the reaction product of a polyoxyalkylene acrylate monomer comprising a terminal alkoxy group containing about 1 to about 6 carbon atoms and a copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer different from the polyoxyalkylene acrylate monomer. A multi-component composite coating composition is also provided.

Abstract: A catalytic tin carboxylate adduct, which is useful as a catalyst in epoxy-acid coating compositions, is the reaction product of (A) a mono-, di-, or poly-carboxylic acid functional compound and (B) an organotin compound containing one to three aryl groups and at least one halogen or hydroxyl group attached to the tin atom. There is also provided an epoxy-acid coating composition, which incorporates this catalytic tin carboxylate adduct. The epoxy-acid coating composition is advantageous as an automotive topcoat, particularly as a clear coat composition because it exhibits good appearance, durability, stability and generates no, or extremely low levels of benzene during the curing process.

Abstract: A waterborne barrier coating composition is provided for protecting interior wall, window and adjacent floor surfaces of paint spray booths from the adherence of unwanted paint overspray. The composition can also be used to protect decorative finishes from damage during assembly processes. The coating composition is applied via brush or spray methods as a mixture of water solubilized styrene/acrylic or acrylic acid polymer, alkali-swellable Acrylate/Steareth-20 Itaconate acid copolymer or alkali-swellable Acrylate/Ceteth-20 Itaconate acid copolymer, and water. No surfactant or polyol is required to form a suitable coating. The composition provides a fast drying transparent or pigmented hard coating that is easily removed by cold water.
