    Abstract: A welding apparatus including, generally, a vertical clamping assembly having an upper and a lower clamping assembly for each of two rail sections to be welded together. These vertical clamping assemblies clamp and vertically align the running surfaces of the two rail sections, by establishing the running surfaces at a pre-determined stop level. The welding apparatus also includes a horizontal centering and aligning apparatus which has a first pair of clamping arms which engage the rail base and pre-center the rail sections with respect to one another and to the welding apparatus. The apparatus also includes a pair of spaced apart clamping arms associated with each of the rail sections which are operable to both laterally clamp the rail heads of the respective rail sections and to horizontally or laterally align the rail sections with respect to one another. Once aligned, the ends of the rail sections are welded together.

    Abstract: A pallet post which comprises a truncated, cone-shaped outer body and a cylindrical-shaped inner body encompassed by the outer body and attached thereto by a plurality of spaced-apart flanges. The post has a top wall on the larger end of the cone-shaped outer body, and the inner body has a portion extending beyond the outer body at at least the end thereof having the top wall. The inner body also has an axial bore extending through it. The post is secured to a pallet by extending the shaft portion of a rivet having an enlarged head through a hole in the pallet into the axial bore in the inner body of the post. The extend portion or portions of the inner body of the post are disposed within the holes in the pallet to provide additional support.

    Abstract: A feed stock comprising sugar, milk solids, a significant amount of moisture, and in some instances chocolate, is raised to a temperature of about 125.degree. C. and at the same time is condensed to have a moisture content of between about 4% and 6%. This is done by moving the material upwardly in an annular column and heating the walls defining that annular column. The condensed material is maintained at its final temperature and transferred to a crystallizer. In the crystallizer it is moved downwardly and kneaded. The kneading is performed by two sets of interdigitating rods, one set being stationary and the other set moving transversely to the downward path of movement of the material. As it is being kneaded it is cooled, both by contact with refrigerated surfaces and also by a countercurrent flow of cool air. The kneading is continued until the product is crystallized and particulate. Thereafter, it is optionally dried to a moisture content of about 1%.

    Abstract: Sulfur dioxide is removed from waste gases such as stack gases by contacting the gas stream with free tertiary amines having basic strengths greater than about pK 5 to form a coordinate covalent complex of the amine and the sulfur dioxide. The sufficiently stable complex is than thermally regenerated to liberate the sulfur dioxide in one stream, to provide the residual gases in another stream, and to provide the regenerated tertiary amine for collection and reuse in a subsequent sulfur dioxide cleanup step. The coordinate covalent complex reacts with even very small concentrations of sulfur dioxide to effectively reduce the sulfur dioxide to detectable zero levels. The presence of carbon dioxide in waste gas streams does not interfere with the efficient cleanup because the selected tertiary amine does not react with the carbon dioxide.

    Abstract: A navigational plotter which generally comprises a rectangular elongated member comprising two straight edges and having a circular protractor rotatably secured thereto in the geometric center. The rectangular elongated member has a plurality of distance scales formed along and adjacent to each of the two opposite longitudinal straight edges thereof. These distance scales correspond to, for example, statute miles, nautical miles or kilometers, and each scale is spaced apart from the other to provide between adjacent scales a clear, unobstructed course line window which permits the navigational plotter to be placed over or adjacent to a course line on a chart without obscuring it. The scales along one longitudinal straight edge of the navigational plotter can correspond to the scaling of, for example, sectional charts, while those along the opposite longitudinal straight edge can correspond to, for example, the scaling of the WAC charts.

    Abstract: A fabric covered button which is of a two-piece construction and includes a button portion which advantageously can have any one of a number of different types of securement means integrally or otherwise formed with it, and a locking ring. The button portion consists of a button head having a stem having a plurality of serrations formed annularly in it integrally formed with the underside of the button head. Any one of a number of different attachment means are or can be integrally formed with the stem, at the terminal end thereof. The fabric is draped over the button head and extended around its edge to the rear thereof. A flat washer-like locking ring having an interior diameter proportioned to forcibly fit over the stem lockingly engages with the respective ones of the serrations. The edges of the fabric at the rear of the button head are lockingly secured between the rear of the button head and the locking ring, by the locking ring when it is secured in place to the stem.
