    Abstract: A gas compressor is employed downhole in a well for pressurizing formation gas. The gas compressor is driven by a downhole electrical motor. The downhole assembly also includes a pump. The pump might be located below the motor and driven by the same motor. In that event, the pump pumps liquid being produced by the formation downward to a liquid disposal formation. Also, the pump may pump the liquid to the surface, with the gas being delivered into a repressurizing zone.

    Abstract: A nasal splint comprising a turbinate retaining portion and a securing system for securing the splint against the nasal septum and causing the turbinate retaining portion of the splint to retain the middle turbinate against the nasal septum. In operation, the nasal splint is placed inside the nose prior to performing endoscopic surgery. The splint is secured to the nasal septum so as to retain the middle turbinate against the nasal septum. Endoscopic surgery is then performed while still retaining the middle turbinate against the nasal septum.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method are disclosed for providing easily replaceable reflective surfaces for highway barricade barrels. A plurality of plastic bands are provided for securing around the exterior surfaces of the barricade barrels. The plastic bands have outer sides through which a plurality of holes extends. Strips of a reflective tape are secured to the outer sides of the plastic bands. The reflective tape has an adhesive backing which is used for securing the tape to the outer sides of the plastic bands. Mechanical fasteners are passed through the holes to fasten the plastic bands to the barricade barrels. The bands are fastened to the barrels with reflective surfaces of the reflective tape facing outward, away from the barricade barrels.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for supplying electric power in the form of an output d.c. voltage. An electret material emits the output d.c. voltage in response to continuously applying a high potential static field across the electret material. In a preferred embodiment, a central member is formed from the electret material and includes two spaced apart, oppositely facing contact surfaces. Two voltage input contacts are separately mounted to the two contact surfaces of the central member, each on opposite sides of an outer portion of the electret material. A static voltage source continuously applies a high static voltage potential across the two voltage input contacts to apply the high potential static field across the outer portions of the electret material. Two voltage output contacts are separately mounted to the two contact surfaces of the central member, on opposite sides of an inner portion of the electret material and spaced apart from the two high voltage contacts.

    Abstract: A railcar cushioning device for absorbing impact between railcars is provided having a hydraulic cylinder containing hydraulic fluid. A piston locates within the cylinder and is movable relative to the cylinder between an extended position and a contracted position in response to draft and buff forces. First and second sensors are provided with the piston and cylinder for detecting movement of the piston and cylinder substantially between the contracted and extended positions. By means of a suitable logic circuit or microprocessor, the period of time that it takes for the piston and cylinder to move between the contracted and extended positions can be monitored to determine if the period of time is less than a preselected amount thus indicating that the cushioning unit has failed. A counter may also be provided to count the number of times that the cushioning unit has failed.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for heating a solid material and dispensing the material as a liquid. A central housing has an inlet, a dispensing orifice and a flow passage extending through the central housing for passing the material from the inlet to the dispensing orifice. A susceptor and induction coil are disposed within the flow passage for immersion within the material after it is liquified. The susceptor includes a conically shaped flow section which extends across the flow passage, and a plurality of flow ports for passing the material. The susceptor further includes a cylindrical section which extends downstream from the flow section for receiving the material from the flow section and passing material to the dispensing orifice. The induction coil is aligned with and spaced downstream from the flow section of the susceptor, surrounding part of the susceptor for electromagnetically inducing electric currents to flow within the flow section.

    Abstract: An extensible wrench handle that can be used with a removable wrench head. The wrench handle has a cross beam shaped primary handle over which an extension may be slid to various positions for increasing or decreasing torque. The wrench handle is also provided with a flexible head that is pivotal about a forward end of the primary handle. The flex head has a substantially square drive post which protrudes from a flat surface of the flex head, the edges of the drive post being convex curved surfaces. The wrench head is an open end wrench that has upper and lower jaws that are joined by a web. A neck is joined to the web and has a drive hole which extends through the neck. The drive hole is defined by sidewalls which are convex arcuate surfaces.

    Abstract: A pulse detonation apparatus utilizes a rotatable core feed cylinder. The core feed cylinder is carried within a inner sidewall of a stationary annular detonation chamber. The core feed cylinder has ports in the sidewall that will register with ports in the inner sidewall of the annular detonation chamber at least once each revolution. A fuel valve means mounted to the outer sidewall of the annular detonation chamber supplies pulses of gaseous fuel. The oxygen content at the forward end of the detonation chamber is richer than toward the rearward end. The fuel is ignited to create a detonation wave. A purge gas flowing through the core feed cylinder enters the detonation cavity after the detonation wave has discharge for purging.

    Abstract: A connector for connecting two pipes into abutment with each other uses mateable hub members with external flanges. One of the hub members has a concentric recess with a gross tapered surface and a fine tapered surface. The gross tapered surface is inclined at a greater angle relative to the axis than the fine tapered surface. The other hub member has a protruding guide member which will contact the gross and fine tapered surfaces when the hub members are brought together. First the gross tapered surface will decrease misalignment, then the fine tapered surface will complete the alignment of the hub members. A seal is located on seal seats in the hub members. The seal is metal and is carried in a position prior to connection so as to avoid damaging contact of the other hub member when the hub members are brought together.

    Abstract: A surgical resection tool of the type having a rotary motor, a dissecting tool and a bearing tube is provided with dual quick releases for quickly releasing and latching dissecting tools and bearing tubes to expedite tooling changes during surgical procedures. The surgical resection tool preferably has a canted centerline in which the centerline for the rotary motor is canted with respect to the centerline for the dissecting tool and the bearing tube to provide an ergonomic shape for holding the resection tool. In a preferred embodiment, the two quick releases are provided by collet type latches having latching balls and slidable sleeves. The slidable sleeves are coupled together for selectively moving to a latching position where latching balls are pressed into grooves formed into dissecting tools and bearing tubes to latch a dissecting tool and a bearing tube into the resection tool.

    Abstract: A surgical tool for resecting bone includes a pneumatic motor to which a bearing tube is secured for rotatably supporting a resecting tool. The bearing tube is eccentrically disposed within an attachment tube, with a flow channel defined between an interior of the attachment tube and an exterior of the bearing tube. Irrigation fluid is passed through the flow channel to maintain a constant flow of irrigation fluid about a cutting end of the resecting tool. Optical fibers extend within the attachment tube for passing light to lenses disposed at the specimen end of the attachment tube for providing illumination. At least one optical fiber extends from a lens at the specimen end, through the attachment tube, and to an optical viewer for providing a means for inspecting the bone being resected. The attachment tube is slidably adjustable along the bearing tube for selecting a distance between the specimen end of the attachment tube and the cutting end of the resecting tool.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for removing oil from absorbent materials of the type used in components for absorbing oil and containing oil spills. The components are first passed through a press to squeeze some of the oil from the components. The components are then shredded to separate the components into separate pieces of the absorbent materials. An auger pushes the pieces of absorbent materials into an elongated tubular trommel having a perforated sidewall. The pieces of absorbent materials are sprayed with treatment fluids as the trommel is rotated to tumble the absorbent materials within the trommel. The oil and treatment fluids drain from the absorbent materials, and pass through the perforations in the trommel sidewalls and onto a collection trough. The collection trough directs the oil and treatment fluids through a separator to reclaim treatment fluids and oil for later use.

    Abstract: A tieback adapter will connect a tieback string between a subsea wellhead assembly and a platform at the surface. The tieback adapter has a housing in which a sub is carried. The sub has a lower end which contains a seal for sealingly engaging an internal sealing surface of a casing hanger located within the subsea wellhead assembly. The sub is connected on its upper end to the tieback string. The housing has a locking element which locks to an internal locking profile of the subsea wellhead assembly. A retainer carries the sub in an upward position within the housing while the tieback adapter is being lowered into the subsea wellhead assembly. A release device will release the retainer from the sub in response to the landing of the housing in the subsea wellhead assembly. This allows the sub to move downward. A cam surface on the sub simultaneously moves the locking element into engagement with the locking profile and the subsea wellhead assembly housing.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for drilling multiple offshore wells from a single conductor casing string. A guide member is provided for securing to a standard casing string, and running downhole and setting within a lower section of the conductor string. The guide member includes multiple guide bores through which standard casing strings are run. A first one of the standard casing strings i secured into one of the multiple guide bores for lowering the guide member into the lower section of the conductor string. A multibore low pressure wellhead housing is mounted to the conductor string as the guide member is being lowered downhole within the conductor string. Once the guide member is set, the first one of the standard casing strings is released from the guide member and passed downward through the guide member for receiving a drill string and guiding the drill string in drilling a first one of the multiple offshore wells.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for providing an aircraft thermal protection system for hypersonic cruise and space launch vehicles. A flexible outer skin formed from a metal super alloy is designed to flex and accommodate thermal growth in the vehicle structure. The flexible super alloy skin is made from a plurality of hexagonal shaped cups which are welded together at the edges in a honeycomb type of array with thermal expansion gaps provided between the outermost surfaces of the hexagonal cups. Gap covers extend across the thermal expansion gaps to reduce aerodynamic drag. The flexible outer skin extends over hexagonal shaped, high temperature ceramic blocks, which provide both an insulation layer and support for the outer skin. The flexible outer skin distributes airloads across various ones of the rigid ceramic blocks.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for de-icing an aircraft of the type having wings and fuel storage in the wings. Hot fuel is provided for fueling the aircraft. The hot fuel is at elevated temperatures which are sufficiently high enough to transfer heat from the fuel, through a fuel tank extending within the wings, and to the exterior of the wings to de-ice the aircraft. A storage tank stores the fuel, and a heater heats the fuel to elevated temperatures. An intermediate thermal transfer system having a secondary thermal fluid transfers heat from a primary power source to the fuel. Further, a substantial volume of the secondary thermal fuel may be maintained at elevated temperatures to provide a sufficient thermal reserve capacity for heating the fuel upon demand.

A feed assembly feeds a pair of tape strips along separate feed paths so that an adhesive applicator located adjacent to each feed path at an application point applies adhesive to a surface of the tape strip as it is fed along the feed path. A wedge-shaped plow is formed from a pair of flat plates which converge at an acute angle toward one another. The flat plates each have a leading edge which directs each tape strip from the feed paths along an exterior surface of one of the plates along lines parallel with the conveyor path.

    Abstract: A pulse detonation device is used to create high temperature high pressure pulses, such as for generating thrust for an aircraft or rocket. The device has a rotating cylinder located within a sleeve. A jacket is spaced outward from the sleeve. The seal and the sleeve are rotatable relative to each other. Each has ports which align with each other to communicate the annular passage with the annulus between the jacket and the sleeve. The jacket has at least one outer port. An outer valve in the exterior of the jacket opens and closes the outer port. A first portion of a fuel mixture, such as oxygen, is supplied to the inner passage within the cylinder, to flow into the annulus through the inner ports. The second ingredient of the fuel mixture, such as fuel, is supplied through the outer valves and outer ports to the annulus. An igniter in the annulus creates a detonation wave.
