Patent number: 4507652Abstract: A Communication System useful for fire detection which transfers data/commands bidirectionally between a controller and connected transponders on a real time, interactive basis. This system makes possible accurate data recovery, whether a transponder has its output shorted, or although multiple transponders are replying and makes possible the remote determination and constant monitoring of transducer sensitivity, at the controller. The sensitivity can be adjusted remotely at the controller, and different transducers can have different thresholds simultaneously, which can be changed collectively or individually to different settings manually or automatically at the controller. The system transmits reference data for supervision of system accuracy. Compensation for long-term changes is provided for both transponders and transducers in this system.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 1984Date of Patent: March 26, 1985Assignee: Baker Industries, Inc.Inventors: William R. Patent number: 4474082Abstract: A control system for a power shifted transmission includes an electrical signal processing system, incorporating a digital processor, which provides output signals to regulate operation of the directional clutch and the range clutches through a plurality of spool valves. A hydraulic stabilizer is connected to a common line supplying the directional clutch, to provide a predetermined amount of fluid with each change in direction, with the remainder of the fluid being provided through a forward-reverse modulating valve. A neutral bleed valve is connected to reduce the measured amount of fluid in the stabilizer when the clutch is being shifted from the neutral position, instead of a full directional change. To improve range shifts, the directional clutch is slipped while the range change is made, and the directional clutch is then re-applied. A horsepower indicator provides the vehicle operator with an instantaneous indication of the vehicle operating efficiency.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 1981Date of Patent: October 2, 1984Assignee: Borg-Warner CorporationInventors: Romas B. Patent number: 4394655Abstract: The signalling system disclosed herein transmits groups of pulses to a plurality of transponders, and each transponder recognizes its address in a particular group of pulses. The group of pulses can reset the system, command a transponder to accomplish a specific function, or command the transponder to do nothing. Information returned from the transponder includes a reference voltage, which can be compared in the controller to continuously determine the margin from alarm of an associated transducer. The transponder further provides a signal identifying itself, and pulse duration signals representing analog signals received from one or more transducers associated with the transponders. No end-of-line termination is required, and branching is possible at any point along the loop.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 1981Date of Patent: July 19, 1983Assignee: Baker Industries, Inc.Inventors: John M. Patent number: 4350058Abstract: The disclosed control system regulates changes of gear ratio in an automatic transmission for a vehicle. A supervisory control arrangement monitors operator input commands through the shift range selector lever, and receives a desired-ratio command either from a shift point computer or from a manual gear shift selector. When the supervisory control arrangement determines that the desired-ratio signal differs from the actual ratio, the monitoring function is interrupted and a shift-initiate command is provided. This command is utilized to assign certain components for use in a shift quality control arrangement, for effecting the controlled ratio change. A torque output signal from the vehicle drive line is used in conjunction with the shift quality control arrangement. After the shift is completed, the previously assigned components are released and the supervisory control arrangement resumes the monitoring of the desired ratio as contrasted to the actual gear ratio.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 1980Date of Patent: September 21, 1982Assignee: Borg-Warner CorporationInventors: Alan L. Patent number: 4259845Abstract: The logic control system of the invention regulates the frequency of operation of an inverter which drives an electric motor, and also regulates the level of the d-c bus voltage supplied to the inverter. This is accomplished by sensing the level of the bus voltage and the level of the current supplied to the motor, and comparing the sensed values to a reference or set point signal. The motor drives a compressor, and a capacity control system cooperates with the logic control system in the regulation of the compressor. The capacity control system provides signals, such as start/stop and inverter set point, to the logic control system to assist in regulating operation of the inverter which drives the compressor. In particular the logic control system includes a reference conductor on which a basic reference control signal is developed for use in controlling both the amplitude and the frequency of the a-c energy supplied by the inverter to the motor.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 1979Date of Patent: April 7, 1981Assignee: Borg-Warner CorporationInventor: Dean K. Patent number: 4236822Abstract: A housing for a fire detector has a circumferential area including a series of vanes or slats, each positioned at an angle with respect to the tangent at the periphery of the housing. The angle is about 45.degree., which not only allows ready entrance of gases through the major portion of the "window" defined by the vanes, but also prevents particles from passing straight through the housing and out the other side. This effects good mixing of the gases, better detection of combustion particles, and also decreases the likelihood of spurious or incorrect signals due to extraneous air currents.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 1979Date of Patent: December 2, 1980Assignee: Baker Industries, Inc.Inventors: Michael G. Jaretsky, Michael Lax

Patent number: 4193573Abstract: A clip is disclosed for insertion in a hole in the side of a paving form. A paper sleeve, diamond-shaped or rectangular in cross section, covers one leg of a tie bar, and the sleeve is supported in the clip. After a slab is poured and the form is removed, the clip and hole identify the position of the tie bar, which is pulled outwardly in preparation for the next pour. The rectangular protective sleeve can be used without the clip, in that it positions the leg of the tie bar closely adjacent the paving form, without the interposition of extra concrete around the edges of the sleeve.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 1978Date of Patent: March 18, 1980Inventor: Walter F. Kinnucan, Jr.

Patent number: 4182137Abstract: A cooling system having an electric drive motor utilizes a portion of the sub-cooled liquid which would otherwise be passed from the condenser through an expansion device to the evaporator to cool the motor. The rotor cooling passage which extends longitudinally through the outer portion of the rotor has its outermost surface (that is, the surface farthest removed from the center of the motor) shaped in an arc having the same center as the center of the rotor. This ensures even distribution of the cooling liquid under the high centrifugal forces developed during motor operation. The stator has a passage from its outside surface inwardly to the longitudinal cooling portion of the stator. The inwardly extending passage includes an orifice, sufficiently large to prevent contamination problems but of an appropriate size to ensure good throttling and thus provide good heat transfer. The cross-sectional areas of the cooling passages are sized to minimize the velocity of the generated vapor.Type: GrantFiled: January 3, 1978Date of Patent: January 8, 1980Assignee: Borg-Warner CorporationInventor: Richard A. Patent number: 4146920Abstract: An input rectifier supplies d-c energy for an auxiliary-commutated inverter. A logic circuit provides gating signals for the semiconductor switches in the input rectifier circuit and in the inverter circuit. A pre-charge circuit provides an independent path to charge the commutating capacitor in the inverter when the system is energized. The gating signals to the input rectifier are delayed by a predetermined time interval, allowing the commutating capacitor in the inverter to be charged and thus ensure effective commutation when the inverter commences operation.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 1977Date of Patent: March 27, 1979Assignee: Borg-Warner CorporationInventor: Frank E. Patent number: 4146085Abstract: A diagnostic system is provided for apparatus including a heat pump, a thermostat and a logic module intercoupled to regulate operation of the heat pump electro-mechanical units. The normal control and operating circuits for the heat pump are completed over a wiring harness plugged into an electrical connector on the logic module, which also receives a plurality of sensor information inputs. To check the system, the diagnostic system has a first cable terminating in an interconnector, inserted between the electrical connector on the module and the harness plug. The sensor inputs are disconnected, and additional connectors, carried in a second cable of the diagnostic system, are coupled to the sensor input connections on the logic module. When thus connected, the diagnostic system monitors operation of the thermostat, even though the module is removed at a considerable distance from the thermostat, and also actuates the heat pump units to check their operation.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 1977Date of Patent: March 27, 1979Assignee: Borg-Warner CorporationInventor: Frank E. Patent number: 4117537Abstract: A demand limiting system is provided for a large electrical energy customer with at least one modulating load. A master control unit continually compares the actual power usage to the desired rate of power usage. When the desired power consumption rate is exceeded by a first amount, the master provides a hold signal to an associated slave control unit, which prevents further loading of the modulating load. When the desired rate of power consumption is exceeded by a second amount, the master provides a reduce signal to the slave unit, which begins to reduce the load. While the hold signal is calling for a reduced load, only a fraction of the time is utilized to reduce the load, and the remainder of the time the modulating load is in the hold condition, allowing the system to stabilize and prevent hunting. The reduce signal also regulates load shedding equipment, to disconnect non-critical loads.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 1977Date of Patent: September 26, 1978Assignee: Borg-Warner CorporationInventor: Paul William Muench

Patent number: 4116321Abstract: A two-stage, four-way valve has fluid input and output connections, and passes a fluid under controlled pressure to an actuator to operate any component. Such operation is sensed and, after comparison with a reference signal, a control signal regulates the duty cycle of a pulse-width modulation (PWM) circuit. The output square-wave signal from the PWM circuit regulates a solenoid incorporated in the valve, to modify its operation and regulate the pressure of the controlled fluid. The valve has a spool which effectively integrates the PWM signal and provides a type 1 servo system when connected in a closed loop system.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1976Date of Patent: September 26, 1978Assignee: Borg-Warner CorporationInventor: Alan Leonard Miller
