  • Patent number: 4948726
Abstract: An enzyme immunoassay based on membrane separation of antigen-antibody complexes wherein human or animal body fluid specimens containing an antigen are mixed with an enzyme-conjugated antibody specific for the antigen under test. Following incubation the antigen-antibody-conjugate mixture is passed through a filter membrane having an electrostatic charge providing an affinity for retaining antigen-antibody-conjugate complexes while not retaining free antibody-conjugate. Following washing of the filter membrane to remove free antibody-conjugate remaining thereon an enzyme substrate-chromogen reagent solution is applied to the filter membrane, which reacts with filter-bound antibody-conjugate and develops a visible or fluorogenic color indicative of the presence of antibody-conjugate.

  • Patent number: 4925344
Abstract: A buried pipe replacement system incorporating an elongated tapered grinding head having a helical cutter element disposed about the periphery and extending substantially along the length thereof. The grinding head is also provided with fluid ejection ports, enabling drilling fluid/lubricant material to be ejected therefrom as the drilling head is rotated and moved linearly against the buried existing pipe. The pipe grinding operation reduces the buried existing pipe to a pulverant form wherein the particulate resulting from grinding away the existing pipe forms a bedding composition lining at least the side and bottom portions of the resulting bore and thereby providing for optimum support of a replacement pipe which is towed into position within the bore simultaneously with the pipe grinding operation. A swivel connection allows rotation of the grinding head without inducing rotation to the replacement pipe following the grinding head.

  • Patent number: 4885844
Abstract: Apparatus permitting factory tailored manufacture of clothing includes a body covering having measurement tapes which are worn by a person undergoing body measurement. Apparatus is also provided to measure crotch and armpit dimensions. The body dimensions of the person being measured are then inspected by a video camera having an output through a video cassette recorder and a computer capable of transmitting measurement date electronically to a remote location where it is received by receiving computer apparatus that converts the measurement signals to a wire frame representation of the exact body dimensions of the person. These body dimensions are then utilized for adjustment of an adjustable mannequin to the exact body dimensions of the person being measured. Thereafter, clothing is tailored to the adjustable mannequin and can then be delivered to the person without any necessity for additional adjustment.

  • Patent number: 4883119
Abstract: A mechanical latching device for repeatable latching and unlatching of downhole well tools is adapted for use in a mandrel interconnected with a tubing string of a well, the mandrel forming a downwardly directed internal shoulder. The latch mechanism incorporates a fishing neck adapted for interconnection with the downhole tool. The fishing neck is disposed in upstanding generally centralized relation within the mandrel. A collet member which may be a component part of a well service tool or which may be a component part of the latch mechanism defines pulling shoulders at the free extremity of collet fingers defined thereby. A latch retainer is disposed in movable relation about the fishing neck and is movable between latched and unlatched positions relative to the fishing neck. In the latched position the latch retainer provides external support for the collet fingers to maintain the collet fingers in latching interengagement with a pulling flank.

  • Patent number: 4862921
Abstract: An air distribution manifold assembly for air support convalescent beds includes a rectangular housing adapted to be secured to a flat surface of the bed structure and cooperating therewith to form an air chamber. A plurality of air distribution connectors extend from respective walls of the housing and are each provided with fixed orifice elements that define orifices of predetermined dimension for distribution of pressurized air to respective air cells of an air bed system. The housing structure defines an outlet opening having a plurality of closely spaced, side-by-side outlet ports that are controllably closed by a slide valve for controlling venting of pressurized air from the air chamber. The slide valve is electrically driven by a rack and pinion assembly and is selectively operable by the patient for adjusting the supply of pressurized air to the air cells to control the firmness of the air support bed.

  • Patent number: 4856557
Abstract: A high pressure, low friction slide valve incorporates a valve body defining parallel spaced internal sealing surfaces and inlet, vent and function ports communicating with an internal valve chamber. A seal carrier is movable within the valve chamber and supports a seal cylinder for rockable motion therein. The seal cylinder has sealing contact with one of the sealing surfaces while a seal rod projecting from a transverse passage of the seal cylinder has sealing contact with the opposite sealing surface. Within the seal rod is positioned a packing member which is of a configuration establishing sealing within the seal cylinder only at a location immediately adjacent the inner end of the seal rod, thus permitting the seal cylinder and seal rod to have low friction metal-to-metal sealing engagement with the parallel sealing surfaces without necessitating the provision of close tolerance seals or O-rings and thus permitting efficient high pressure sealing and low friction movement of the valve mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4846272
Abstract: A downhole flow testing valve having a tubular housing with a valve and flow tube movable within the housing between an open position where valve ports therein are positioned in registry and a closed position where the valve ports are out of fluid communicating registry. The valve and flow tube is closed by a resultant force developed by compressed gas and opened by pressure introduced into the valve from the annulus between the valve and well casing. The normally closed flow testing shuttle valve is secured in its closed and safe condition during installation by a hydraulically locked sleeve valve. Upon fracture of a break plug by an implement dropped through the straight through flow passage of the flow tube hydraulic fluid captured within a locking chamber is released from the locking chamber by the force of a compression spring.

  • Patent number: 4653960
Abstract: A submersible offshore crude oil separator and storage facility for petroleum products which may also form a stable platform which an offshore structure or vessel for drilling or production of petroleum products may be removably located. The buoyancy of the oil separator and storage vessel and platform facility is controllable to compensate for the weight of apparatus to be located thereon and production fluid to be contained therein. An elongated storage chamber defined therein may be in the form of a plurality of vertical compartments to insure the safety and integrity of the system should one of the compartments become ruptured or otherwise develop a leak. The storage chamber is pressure balanced with the hydrostatic pressure of sea water thus permitting it to be manufactured of relatively light weight and low cost materials as compared to vessels designed to withstand hydrostatic pressure and/or internal pressure.

  • Patent number: 4475892
Abstract: Microcellular ceramic material comprises a plurality of elongated vitreous micro sized ceramic rods which are placed in side-by-side touching relation and define elongated lines of contact therebetween. The rods also define interstices therebetween which may be void or may be filled or substantially filled with vitreous fibers, polymer materials, acid soluble or insoluble vitreous fibers and other suitable fibers. The rod mass either so filled or unfilled is first fused at the lines of rod contact by elevated temperature and is then annealed to cause the ceramic fibers to crystallize and form an elongated porous crystalline log. The log is then sectioned transversely or linearly to form thin wafers which in turn are built up in layers which are fused to form useful integral composite cellular objects. Through use of selectively arranged colored fibers the transversely sectioned wafers will have controlled microdots of color to provide the object with controlled color characteristics.
